Hi all,

I know new threads keep popping up of people asking: what's your favorite moisturizer?? and everyone gets sick of answering the same question :look:

buuttt I'm desperate. I NEED a really heavy moisturizer to use overnight because my hair is really dry. I ordered some Qhemet amla & olive oil cream on BF, but I'm not sure the order went through, and I can't wait until January for the store to open up again.

So anyone have any ideas of heavy, creamy moisturizer, hopefully one I can purchase in person? One that does not have glycerin/humectants because of the season?

PS I'm trying to avoid mineral oil/paraffin

TIA!

there was a thread the other day about chicaro's (sp) treatment.
I tried it and it was very happy.

I'm on my phone right now but i'm sure someone else can post a link if you need it.

I add pure shea butter (w/coconut oil &/or castor oil mixed in) to anything to make it heavy. Just melt it in, then pour in a little coconut oil and castor oil. That aught to do the job. Thats all I tend to use lately. Melt this concoction into your cholesterol conditioner or fav conditioner. I experimented w/the shea butter mixed w/aloe vera gel this week (they call it shealoe) and slathered it on overnight. My hair was very moist in the morning.

Have you considered baggying your hair overnight? I do this occasionally as an overnight moisture booster.

We might be able to help more if we know about your regimen. What products are you using and how often? For what it's worth, I will take a stab at it.

I would suggest baggying with a mix of butter (olive, shea, take your pick) and a good moisturizing conditioner (make sure it does not contain protein). You could try one night with just the butter, then one night with just the conditioner, and one night with the mix. See which one your hair prefers.

My hair is naturally very dry and ORS carrot oil works wonders for me. For the times my hair is extra-extra dry, I use NTM Silk Touch after the carrot oil and wrap it up for the night with my silk scarf. Feels like butta in the morning.

ETA: Another tip - On the rare nights I'm not washing/cowashing my hair, I rub in carrot oil and NTM and slick back into a loose bun. I take a hot shower (without a shower cap) and let the steam give my hair a moisture boost. I then lightly coat with EVCO and wrap up and go to bed.

Thanks for the responses!

I currently wash and DC once ever 10 days. I use heat every time I wash (blow dry/flat iron). I use giovanni direct leave in, and some oils, and heat protectants.

Before the winter I had been making a moisturizer with glycerin, rosewater, water, giovanni leave in, and some oils. Nowadays I've just been using JC nourish and shine, which is more of a sealant than a moisturizer. This is a big gap in my regime.

Baggying sounds good to me, but are you suggesting to do this on dry hair, and not washing it out in the morning?

ETA a main reason I've been having problems is because I'm studying abroad in London and can't find anything around here!!

A water based, creamy moisturizer would be good for moisturizing while baggying. Oils and butters aren't great for providing moisture, just sealing it in and softening the hair. You don't need a special moisturizer to baggy with necessarily.

Don't sleep on plan ole water misted on your hair and seal with a light oil to baggy with.

I recently purchased QB Alma & Olive oil cream because I too was struggling with moisture retention. While I think it's a great product (I use it for twists and twist outs), I don't think it counts as a "true" moisturizer because water is not its first ingredient; castor oil is. It is very heavy, and has more of the consistency of a butter or heavy oil. Honestly, I consider it more of a sealant than a moisturizer for this reason.

What is working for me now is a mix of CFG scurl, water, WGO and EVOO/castor or hot 6 oil. I know the glycerin is "supposed" to be a big no-no in the winter, but honestly, my hair feels super moisturized with it. I seal with EVCO.

I've also started using Shea Moistures Conditioning Milk leave-in as my after co-wash moisturzer/leave-in, and I've been VERY pleased with this as well.

Good luck!

I don't really care for QB Alma & Olive heavy cream, because it just sits on my hair. It doesn't really penetrate it. But, castor oil has a tendency to just sit on my hair so I guess that's why. I do like the QB Burdock Root cream, because it's more of a moisturizer in my opinion and is more penetrative.

Girl, I feel you. I am using activator gel as my twisting agent then I spritz daily with a glycerin based spray laced with aloe juice and JBCO and me and my hair are happy :yep:

wait really?? ithought glycerin would be necessary for the winter since the air is soo dry and cold 0_o

From my understanding you shouldnt use glycerin in winter because the glycerin is attracted to dryness and it actually ends up being sucked outta your hair into the dryer environment and taking moisture with it

The advice regarding glycerin (and other humectants) during the winter is somewhat misguided. It really only applies if you're applying pure glycerin (and nothing else) to your hair. From my research on YT and here, it seems like the ladies are only using it mixed with other ingredients, so it would not have this effect.

This post explains it better. It's about skin, but the same applies to hair.
Can Moisturizers Actually Make Skin Drier?

To answer the question, I enjoy avocado butter and/or Shea Moisture's Curl Enhancing Smoothie. :lick:

Hope that helps!!
