Naturals: Why some of you say you can't see Growth?

I know we have shrinkage, but alot say when their hair is growing that they can't see it, I ask because I can see when mine is growing without pulling it or stretching it or blow drying etc. I mean for me, I see thin spots fill in, I see my fro getting bigger, I see that it starts to take more conditioner, I see that it starts to take longer to dry, I see that my Wash n Go's have become chunky and not as curly, I see that I can do small twist etc. To me these are signs of growth. But I know my hair grows up and out and not down.

But even when I used MTG last year when I had a Twa I had great growth within 3 weeks:D

I don't know, I know we all have diferent hair, I recently just cut off an inch and a half off my already short Twa due to that Lemon Juice in my Henna/Indigo:mad: it was just no recovering, so that was a Set Back but I can see it growing:)

Also does Anyone Have sideburns Like I have? I don't know what to do with them, they grow all the way down by my ear just look at my avitar, I already have a Big Forehead so I think cutting witll be a No No:lol:

Thanks Ladies!!

The longer the hair the harder it is to see. When your hair is short little changes show up quicker. When you are shoulder length or longer you dont really see it until a drastic change happens.

I would have to say it's because of shrinkage....my natural hair when flat-ironed or stretched is collarbone length, when shrunken it looks like I have a medium sized fro...I can't part my hair and see that it has grown 1/2 inch in 2 weeks or 1 inch in a month....I can't SEE it because the texture of my hair is the same from root to tip unlike our sisters who relax, they can see their newgrowth because the texture is very obviously different. If you pull and stretch and flatiron ofcourse you'll be able to see but I don't want to do all that manipulation just to "see the growth" hence the reason why I chose to revisit the crown and glory method, I will be able to "see my growth" with much less manipulation. It's easy to see new growth if you have a twa but once it gets a little larger it'll take much longer to "see the growth" without major manipulation of your hair.

Dang you said the same thing with fewer words....I guess I'm wordy.

Yes I agree, I can't tell when my hair grows either. Unless I try to do a different style that I hadn't tried in a long time then I notice my hair is longer but not long enough for me to say its growing. I actually have to look back at my pictures to see growth. I did notice that its has gotten thicker and I only notice it because I was trying to comb it and I notice it felt heavier then usual. Not longer like I wanted but I am still happy about it. I just try not to watch it anymore. I know I got a year to grow it the length that I want so I just relax and enjoy the journey. I think the baggie method is what is making my hair thicker.

The ladies already covered the basis for me. I'm texturized now but its still the same frustration because its all curly. I realized my hair had grown only because it wasn't acting right and not responding to my product in its normal fashion. I just started a textured album w/comparison pics and I now have timeframe hair goals. :)

Well Thank You all for helping me to understand, I had asked because I see so many Naturals with Long hair and they say they can't see their growth.

I have never seen my own growth even when I was relaxed. It was always other people that would tell me. But I guess shrinkage makes it even worse!

I can usually tell that my hair is getting longer when I wash it. When it's gotten longer, my hair feels heavier when its wet.

I agree, cause my roots come in nearly straight and wave out and curl about an inch down the shaft, so it is very hard to tell. I need to get 6 inches to look like I got 2 inches!

Here is how my hair grows out. There is no way except by stretching and going by where it hits on my body parts that I can really tell. bonjour

I'm natural and I press my hair once a month to see growth. That's the only way I can see my progress.

I agree I get my hair press every three or fourth month and that's the only way I can tell if I get growth. I usually have my hair in cornrows I can see thickness but not length.:ohwell:

I find this to be true. Once my hair got about APL I don't notice growth until I straighten it out. It looks like my hair isn't growing and then I'm always really suprised when I straighten it. Despite it being about BSL my hair can shrink up to my ear when wet.

My hair is growing real fast since I cut off my relaxed ends to a natural TWA. It took me 7 months to see 2.75" new growth when I was relaxed. In February, I had <.5" of hair after the cut and now, 2 months later, I have 1.5"- 2" of natural hair. I have never seen this growth in years!

I stay in braids because I like to see my growth, also i stretched it out somtimes to see it..

I was thinking about getting braids for that reason. I try stretching my hair, but it's hard to see anything.

Your hair reminds me of mine, but I have curls all over the place. My hair at the bottom is curly but loose. I can easily reach for the strands in the back and stretch them out to see length. When my hair is wet, it gets fairly straight (almost completely straight when the water first hits it), so I can pull it to measure length. Like you, I also use body parts as milestones. I also have moles on my back that I use :-).

Isn't that strange(((()))) It does go from straight to curly to shrink shrink shrink...It looks like I have a relaxer when the water is hitting my hair....always found that weird, considering I have so much shrinkage. bonjour

heh that sounds like my hair. its striaght with water, then wavy/curly a min after getting out the shower then its crazy coily when its dry. lol

The only way I can really tell that my hair has grown is when it is blow dried and flat ironed.

i only really see it when i blow it out and flat iron it. or sometimes, suddenly i'll see my hair totally soaking wet and say....WOW, it really grew. but for the most i keep my hair up and definitely would say i see the growth once straightened out with the flat iron.

Well for my hair every 3 inches of growth is about 1.5 inches drop in lenth...so thats why it doesnt seem like its growing. I am a little bit past APL and no one would ever know by looking at my head. I have yet to completely straighten my hair.

I can never really tell.

It always just looks the same to me lenght wise.

Somedays it looks bigger than others, though.
