How do you get your hair so straight? I’ve been off and on flat ironing my hair to check the length and really it’s been meaningless because my hair seems resistant to flatironing. Is there something that I should do that I am not doing correctly?

you sound like you need an old school press
i blow dry then flatiron that seems to give me better results
i have been wanting to try a flatiron with the comb teeth on
the edges but they scare me. maybe i will get one today and
try it since sally's gives you a 90 day "trial" w/ receipt

Hey Port,

Actually your one of the albums that I've been peeping at for inspiration. I normally twist and let it dry and then flat iron. Next time I will try to blow dry first.

But all the horror stories on here about that old school press with the comb frightens me too

I blowdry first then flatiron as well. I use a really good heat protectant and some shea butter and my hair gets pretty straight.

Carefree is another album to check out. I believe she uses the "twist to air dry then flat iron" method.

Thanks Pookeylou and Nurse,

Another mistake I make on my natural hair is sometime using Petroleum (sp) to coat my hair. I know bad me. :spank: LOL. This could have something to do with it not gettting straight.

I wait until my two strands are a day old, then I straighten. I need to invest in a ceramic iron, though.
You could also rollerset your hair then straighten it.

Would blowdrying and then flatironing be too much heat?

Do you think doing a airdried rollerset then flatironing would do the trick to straightening natural hair?

That's what I thought at first but for my wedding (first time straightening my hair in over a year) I used Got2b creme straightener to blowdry my hair with medium heat setting (just to get it dry) then I put a small amt. of shea butter cream on each piece right before I flat-ironed it. When I washed it out, my hair was right back to normal.

Blkbeauty, make sure you do a good deep conditioning when you wash too.

I only straighten about twice a year so I don't know how helpful I can be. I would like to say that I was very pleased with my visit to the Dominican hair salon recently. After she washed and deep conditioned my hair under the dryer, she gave me a roller-set, then blow dried (with a round brush) and wrapped my hair. I've been wrapping it every night so far to keep it as straight as possible. A few nights ago, I blow-dried again like she did with a round brush (and oil) and it still looks pretty good. Good luck!

ETA: OMG!! I just read what happened to you in the thread about DOM salons (not for everyone)! I'm so sorry that happened. That's why I don't get my hair straightened very often. Salons are scary sometimes. Once or twice a year is enough for me.

I blow dry and flat iron (ceramic) with a good heat protectant. Deep condition and use a leave in. I may opt for a light oil or serum.

My natural hair was resisitant to flatironing, too. Whenever I wore it straight, I had to use tha good 'ol pressing comb. Nothing else would work on my 4zzzzzzzzzzzz hair!

You can blowdry it with a boar's hair brush and use the Sleek.look Extreme Creme and Iron Smoother to flat iron/hot comb your hair. Don't do this very often or breakage may ensue.
