Hi ladies,

I want to start clipping my own ends, but it is really difficult to recognize the split ends. Is blowing drying it straight the only way I can do this?

I've cut my own ends twice on my own since I've been naturual. Once by blow drying my hair and another time when I had twist in my hair, I cut the ends of each twist. I'm sure there is a proper way of cutting natural hair that I don't know of.

Bumping!

I'm texlaxed and wear me hair in wash n' gos during the summer. I wanted to start trimming my own hair 'cuz my stylist is scissors CRAZY! She will blow dry my hair before trimming, is this what I'll have to do also?

I've trimmed my natural hair twice since I've been natural. I like to cut about 1/4 to 1/2 and inch. I'm not really looking for split ends. I'd rather cut the hair before splits ends ever appear. But each time I've cut, I cut loose while it's still wet. I partition my hair in sections and go through small chunks at a time. I use the rat-tooth comb, I'm not sure if that's what you call it, and I comb it over my finger so the ends are resting on my finger. Then I snip the length that is curled over my finger. My hair has maintained it's shape in the wash n go. I haven't tried wearing it straight yet, so we'll see how it looks then. But since the fro shrinks anyways, this method has worked really well for me.

I have self trimmed a couple of times. I usually just decide how much I want to trim off. I've done it on air dried, blown out and this last time flat ironed hair. This last time I did my standard trim and them when back through and felt my ends for any knots or "roughness" and trimmed those babies out as well.

I trim my hair in the two strand twist. This way I know I trimmed all over, I can see the back twists. I would not be able to trim the back any other way. I just snip all the ends. I do this eveyy 4-6 weeks. :)

i actually just braid my hair into box braids (medium in size) and take a pair of sharp scissors and snip straight across. In recent months i've done about a half to a quarter inch each time.... and its so easy like this and the hair doesn't unravel a bit like it does in the two strand twists so it stays pretty stationary which makes snipping easy. Usually takes me no longer 20 minutes to acheive an entire hair cut- fuss-free!

There are a couple ways to do this as the other ladies said. One of the most efficient is to part your hair at the ear and put in two pony's after blow drying or flatironing and just clip off those thin looking ends. You end up with two layers that are pretty and cute and even!

I am texlaxed now but I've been self trimming this entire year. I find that I get a little scissor happy myself. (smiles) I just see thin ends and say hey let me get out my special scissors. (laughs)

Anyways another way if your hair is longer is to blow it out, maxiglide and then part it down the middle from forehead to neck and then comb and clip each side. That works too.

Best wishes!

I've self-trimmed about 2x before. My hair was flat-ironed, both times except in one situation the ends were poofy. Anyway, I just pulled each side of my hair to the front and clipped off the unwanted length. Then end result was a v-shape in the back. I think it's best to have your hair as straight as possible. Otherwise let a pro do it. My stylist cut my hair in the natural state a few months back and she cut off my tail. So now my hair is more u-shaped in the back.:D

I cut off the ends from the twists...this works well for me because my hair isnt damaged. If my natural hair was damaged then I would go to a stylist or attempt to straighten it myself and trim. When your hair is in its curly state, its hard to see all of the spilts and knots that you may have.

I usually just take stretched out sections and trim about 1/2 an inch all the way around. I don't straighten it with heat to do this. I just braid, airdry, comb out my hair in sections, and trim. Other times, I fish through my hair for any splits and cut them off strand by strand. It's somewhat tedious but I find that it saves me a lot of hair than doing it the other way.

I get my hair cut at the salon but he cuts it wet. He just pulls sections out with a comb much like a stylist would do with relaxed hair and nips the very end of it.

That's me right here, but I'm supposed to be dusting and recently I think I overdid it to the front but ohwell lol

This is what Master cuts did with my hair. Curly hair IMO is really not that hard to cut . As long as you dont cut the hair entirely even and blunt all over the head, it is highly unlikely that you would end up with a wedge/triangle look (unless one likes that style of cut :look:). I dont knowhow and why some stylists jack people up like that.

Right... I don't understand why stylists act like it's so hard to do. However, if a stylist didn't know how to do it I would prefer they tell me up front before they took the scissors to my head and jacked it up.

I don't like that wedge/triangle looking cut either. :look: I'm just going to let my hair grow out with it's natural layers into whatever shape it wants to be. And just let him trim it every so often so it keeps a shape and so my ends are clean. He does a good job and is really reasonable.

When I dust my hair, I usually overdo the front too!!! And the front is the area that I want to be longer.

I've cut my own hair both ways - while straightened and while in twists. Because I don't straighten my hair often, it was like I was dealing with someone else's hair and the cut didn't turn out so great.

I prefer cutting/trimming/dusting my hair after I put it in small two strand twists. After twisting, I put my hair in two scrunchies, I pull each twist out, cut, pull the next twist out, cut, etc. This helps me to keep track of what has been cut.

That is exactly how I dust!

This is pretty much my routine on trimming my hair. In fact it's been a long time since I actually straightened it to trim it. I make sure to condition it really well and follow up with a leave-in or a good oil and let it dry. I comb it out the next day and proceed to dust as needed. I do this about every four months.

Before I was only dusting about once or twice a year but I've noticed my ends can get rather rough feeling and I don't like that. So I stepped up the dustings to once every four months and will do them every three months if necessary.

I have cut, trimmed and dusted my own hair and still do.

I find it is better to cut it when it is straighten but I have also found washing my hair then braiding it and brushing it out with a denman brush to be a good way to trim too.

I have not cut my hair since last year. I now dust the ends a lot and this seems to help me avoid any major cuts or trims.
