I have a question. Couldn't CO washing also be a way of high manipulation?

I'm not an expert but for me, yes. This is why I don't co-wash. It made more work and more setback for me. I just shampoo and DC every two weeks. In between that time I leave it alone and only touch it to moisturize the scalp/strands and finger comb when needed.

ITA.........

^^ I cowash....every 1-2 weeks. So it's a combination of both. :yep:

I only use shampoo maybe once a month if at all depending on how my scalp feels. I find that a lot of buildup can be removed with a oil/pre-poo if I massage my scalp really well.

Only detanglilng every 3-4 weeks? WOW!!! I could never. You are tough!!!

I think high moisture, low manipulation. Definitely bunning works for me.

I detangle with care with Queen Helene cholestrol conditioner. You should see all the shedded hair in my hand when I finish. It doesn't freak me out because that's the hair I would have lost anyway. I'm thinking of bunning two weeks straight or doing mini twists every three weeks.

This seems to be the best method for me too. Too much washing is a no no.

Theres this girl on Youtube with waist length natural 4a hair and she washes only once a month!

For me just keeping my hair moisturized. dry hair equals breakage. Also letting my hair be free. Wash and gos work for me better than bunning/ twists because it's less manipulation and less stress on my hair. It does not like to be bound :nono:

Tell me, do you guys think that if I cowash maybe three times a week, wetbun for three or four weeks at a time and then shampoo and detangle, that it would be more harmful or helpful to my hair?

I did this and I had quite a bit of shed hair when I rollerset last night.

I try to put it in perspective that I hadn't detangled my hair in over a month.

I'm hoping that by doing this I am retaining more...I would love to cornrow my hair and get a sew-in ...but it's just not me. I'd feel so self-conscious.

So, as a protective style, I wetbun daily/ cowash every other day - I do not detangle my hair. I simply sweep it up into a high bun. I'll smooth the front with my hands and a tiny bit of gel and tie down with a scarf. My hair comes out perfect - the messy bun look, smooth at the hairline.

I think I'm making good progress, but I hate seeing that much shed hair - even if it is in a month - Also, I'm addicted to water in my hair...I've gotta have it!

that seems like a lot. for me leaving my hair the hell alone works. i don't do 50 million things to it (although i have a catrillion products lol) but all of the baggying, bunning, cowashing 10 times a day....i can't be bothered. and my head would be sore if i tried.

I simply keep my hair up in braids, and am currently apl, i hv been 2 yrs natural. Unfortunately my hair will tangle up in a heart beat if not in braids. I have been rocking wigs and braid for d past 2 yrs, never worn a braidout or anything cos of tangles. Maybe I would try tht in a year's time. Your diet is very important also for retention despite the fact a lot of people focus on the outside for retention and inside for growth. Inside is also important for retention, good luck.

ITA with everyone else. All those methods have helped me maintain and retain my length. I have retained good length since my BC. Though I did cut about an inch in late July due to heat damage I've seen that back and some.

The biggest thing for me to retain length is to live Stress Free and Eat Healthy. When I'm not living right and not doing those 2 things my hair falls out, sheds more, and the growth rate slows to a snails pace. If I'm doing the right techniques and living a healthy lifestyle then I retain more length.

Have to agree with you there Ramya, dry hair equals breakage :yep:

Moisture and DC's seem to be doing good by my hair.

Also, being patient is big. I've cut down combing - esp when I realized my hair looked the way I'd always wanted it to look the less I messed with it. The only downside is that I now have to remove way more shed hair at once than I would normally, so it's very important that I take my time and go section by section.

I'm a new natural - but in the past I noticed that low mani styles (braids esp) helped me retain a TON a growth with literally no effort on my part.

Awesome tips, great advice! Thanks :yep:

I have a question. Couldn't CO washing also be a way of high manipulation?

I primarily co-wash, but not always daily. It depends on how I'm wearing my hair, if it's curly every other day, up to weekly or more. I finger comb and use a a wide tooth comb I don't have detangling issues anymore and for my thick curly pouffy hair, if I don't detangle for a really long time it gets tangled and matted up. If I'm wearing my hair straight or it's cold I co-wash weekly-2 weeks .

I use a wide tooth comb specifically made for curly hair and i only comb it when my hair is drenched in conditoner. I wouldnt dare touch a comb to my hair - wide tooth curly girl comb or not- without condtioner in my hair. I have mostly shedding and not breakage this way. I also comb my hair in certian directions. The front i comb down towards my nose, the sides i comb down towards my ear, the crown i comb straight up and the nape i comb down towards my neck. It really helps.

Moisture, moisture, moisture!

Keeping those ends hidden as well, for whatever protective style you choose, whether it's braids, buns or even twists.

I two-strand my twists and then wrap the twist around itself into a knot, keeps all the hair hidden and tight :yep:

Low mani: Keeping hair in a style that doesn't require you to mess with it and leaving it well alone.

I wash weekly and detangle on wash day with a shower comb. I also pre-poo with heat and protective style by using wigs and plait my hair undermeath. I moisturize several times a week. Less is more with rentention and overall growth. Exercise and vitamins are good too. I don't take alot of pills though. Just msm crystals in my tea, green vibrance, evening primrose and a multi-vitamin.

The Best Way for my fine/ Cnapp hair to retain length
1. K.I.S.S.
2. Dusting/Trim ever 10 weeks ( this is key for me)
3. Moisture/ Protein balance

What kind of things are you ladies doing to keep your ends stretched to avoid knots? I saw that posted a couple of times...thanks!
