Naturals what do you think is the best way to retain length

detangling only once a week
keeping hair in braids
moisturizing twice a day
using natural oils and deep conditioners
no heat at all

For me it has been keeping my hair in box braids for 6wks at a time. I apply distilled water and leave-in conditioner daily and seal with coconut oil or castor oil.

2010 I'm going to try a method that Nonie uses with good results and that is keeping the braids in continuously, never taking all the hair down at one time, redoing them as needed. I'm going to try it from Jan to June and see what happens.

I do that too and it really works!

so you wash with the braids in, and then only do certain sections? i pretty much did that with my twists recently and only got to half of my head--was just too tired to finish the rest.

How do you know which ones to redo? Do you just go off of site and feel?

Since posting this, I've changed things around. I twist, wear twistouts for a week, retwist, apply shampoo on scalp, rinse and condition in shower, take out twists one twist a time and take out the shedded hair with organic carrot creme or olive oil conditioner, retwist. I detangle with a comb in the shower now with Queene Helene condition every 4 weeks. I think I will bun for Christmas, I want something elegant for that day.

Well I haven't tried this method yet, but since I'll be wearing natural box braids, I'm going to start the rebraiding process every 6weeks, a section at a time. Take them down, detangle with my fingers to remove shedded hair and put them right back up.

How is this working for you, are you retaining a lot of length?

I feel you on the bun, lol. I wear twist or braids all year basically, so for xmas I have to take my hair down and get it flatironed, my SO said that he puts up with my hair crap all year long, he wants to see my hair straightened for the holiday:rolleyes: But after that, it's back to the basics:yep:.
