Do you use a fine tooth comb to straighten out the sections of your hair before rolling the section with a roller? If so, do you get a lot of breakage?

If not, what do you use to get it straight enough to wrap around the roller?

Thanks in advance!

I usually use a fine tooth comb to straighten out the sections before rolling. I don't get a lot of breakage, usually my hair is very well detangled so the comb glides through the hair with ease.

interesting u said this...before i got weave sewn in my hair, i did a rollerset. i noticed that my new growth was easier to comb through than my relaxed hair. I detangled pretty well, but as i comb through a section of my hair, the relaxed part would start to be tangled and matted. :ahwell:

Sorry to hear that Poohbear! Unfortunately I think the tangling is just a given when you are transitioning because of the 2 different textures. When you are totally natural I doubt you will have that problem. What type of shampoo and/or conditioner do you use? During one of my transitions the only shampoo that did a decent job of detangling both my relaxed and natural hair was Cream of Nature Detangling Shampoo. I hope you find something that works for ya!

I use Creme of Nature Detangling Conditioning Shampoo for dry, brittle, color-treated hair.

I condition my hair once a week with LeKair Cholesterol Plus mixed with Hot 6 Oil for 20 minutes.

I use Suave Professionals Humectant for co-washes.

I guess I'm a lil' clueless because I didn't even realize that naturals could roller set. I guess I can understand it on pressed hair, but can you do rollersets on your natural wet or dry fro? What is the result if it's done on unstraightened natural hair? TIA

Check out our very own Carefree's album in her Dec 03 album. She did a rollerset on unstraighten relaxed hair! :)

I rollerset during my transition using a half and half mixture of Elasta QP Silk and water. I used a wide tooth comb to comb through my roots and used the skinny tooth comb on the relaxed parts. Your rollersets can still come out really well with all the newgrowth :).

You can check out the rollerset pic i have in my album http://public.fotki.com/jainygirl/me__my_hair_pics/rollerset.html. That is my last set before doing the big chop, i had about 11 weeks of newgrowth. As far as getting it around the roller, i just pulled the hair taut. What helped my roots to set well is that i would spritz each section as i added each roller so that the roots wouldnt be frizzy. If your roots have gotten dry while you are still setting make sure to spritz them with water before setting. HTH -- jainygirl

I also use a fine tooth comb with no problems.

@legallyspeaking, I also have rollerset in my album. It can be done! :)

Poohbear, I just recently discovered a wonderful detangling solution that I was sleeping on but I revisited it to see if it would help. I put my hair into three ponytails and followed the rest of these directions for each section. I mixed olive oil, honey, and Suave Trop. Coc. conditioner warmed it up a little and did a preshampoo treatment after spritzing my hair with water to get my hair damp first. Then I let it sit for 1-2 hours. I pooed with Keracare Detangling poo since I had some under my sink and did each section at a time. I also used Humecto to condition each section at a time and this helped alot with detangling. Then I use NTM leave in and the pink lottabody setting lotion diluted with water. This works perfectly for me whether I want to rollerset, flexi rod it or do a braidout. HTH for you. Try to set your hair this way and see what happens!

Oh I forgot to add I use a fine toothed comb also when rollersetting. Just be careful and comb from ends to roots.

i remember seeing your rollerset pics... your hair was pretty!

i think that's what i need to start doing is to keep spritzing my hair with water before setting it with a roller.
