What are you guys using to press your hair? Are you using a comb on a cooking stove? Did you buy an oven made for combs or marcels? Are you using an electric comb? Also, what degree of straightness do you achieve with your tools?
I use my flat irons I have a cheapie (conair* yellow and black from walmart) and FHI and they get my hair straighter than any hot comb that I have used.
I use a pressing comb that I put on the burner, and I do a light to medium press mainly to get my roots straight, and then I use a flat iron (Solia) to go over the rest of my hair.
I am thinking about staightening my hair myself. I went to a nice salon recommended by LHCF members and it did not go well. She flat ironed my hair but I ended looking like Shaka Kahn on a bad hair day. I went to my hood salon and she gave me a press. It looked fantastic but some of her hair practices and etiquette are atrocious.
When I flat iron myself the ends are a mess. I have never tried pressing my own hair but I'm thinking about buying an oven.
When I was natural the ONLY thing that got my hair silky straight (like a relaxer) was the Maxiglide (after applying straightening shampoo, conditioner and then blow dry straight with comb attachment followed by a straightening serum). If you detangle and blow dry well you won't have to worry about any snags with the wonderful MG. I love my Maxiglide...I still use it even though I decided to Texlax.
My ends used to be a mess when I would just use the pressing comb. Talk about breakage? knots? curly ends? The pressing comb was very damaging to my hair.
But I texlaxed because I prefer to wear my hair straight 99% of the time. I had to be honest with myself on that one...cause it was the only reason I was holding on to being natural for six years.
I use a flat iron, but I really want to try a hard press. The problem is I know I can't do it myself, and I'm scared to let someone else do it. I wish I lived near Pinkskates! I wold trust her.
Right now my hair is not damaged at all, and I'm afraid to let any stylist do my hair at all, let alone put a smoking hot comb on it.
ETA: I rollerset with leave-in conditioner before I flat-iron. I never use a blow dryer.
Blowdry then flatiron with my Jibere....does great things
OP...What LHCF recommended stylist did you go to?
I had a similar experience as you and Im just curious.

I also use a flat iron. I could never get it right with a pressing comb although when I went home to Chicago or my mom came to visit, she could get it right. I could not really get it right with a flat iron either until I bought the Maxi-Glide. I did come to realize that I could not get it right pressing it because my hair was usually over-moisturized and that, I found out once I found this site, is not conducive to a good press.
