NATURALS * Mushy Hair?????

Mook's hair

I was co-washing last night and a question came to me.

Does mushy/over-moisturized hair ever happen to naturals?
OR
Is mushy/over-moisturized hair only a problem when you are relaxed?

Can you over moisturize natural HAIR? or is is mainly a biproduct of the raised cuticle from the process of relaxing?:blah:

i've over moisturised my hair before i remember when i first heard of over moisturising i was like what ever but i did.

my was just too soft ,mushy and wasn't strong like it usually is all i did to fix it was i just didn't moisturise for a few days and it was back to normal

oh yeah i'm natural

it happened to me when i did the baggy method. i didn't realize it was possible either. at first i blamed the baggy method too, then later realized i just needed to up my protein treatments. :yep:

When I first started wearing my hair out natural and getting used to it, I did overmoisturize my hair bc it became mushy. I backed off on the moisture for a while and my hair was fine.

wow, I did not know that natural hair could be over moisturized?!?! Hopefully, I will find the right moisture/protein balance to safe guard this.

Yeah, hair period can be overmoisturized. Natural, relaxed, texlaxed hair, whatever the type...

Yeah, I did it once, when I was baggying overnight, every night, for like 3 weeks straight - my hair started complaining and my scalp started itching. I dropped the baggying down to twice a week, and my hair was happy with that and returned to 'normal' in about a week.
It feels - gooey, almost, to me. SUPER soft and - mushy - somehow. Only when wet, though, at least for me. When it was dry - it felt - extra fragile? I don't know - it was oddfeeling though - it definitely didn't feel like my hair.

I don't think that naturals need a protein treatment to recover from overmoisture the way relaxed heads do. I think if we just ramp down whatever moisture treatments we were doing to get our head that way, it'll reach a good equilibrium pretty quickly.

Hello ladies, thank you for your educational responses. I'm trying to learn more about my hair's moisture needs. Lately my hair seems to dry very fast and I think I have porosity issues.

eh. :look: i'm also a co-washing addict, i'm sure that did nothing but accelerate the over-moisturization. so i just incorporated protein in cuz i'm not about to stop co-washing! :lachen:

***also wanted to add, i NEVER had over-moisturized hair when i was relaxed. i rarely did protein treatments back then either, i think i just wasn't up on my moisturization.

 True, true!!! Yeah, if you aren't going to stop what's causing the overmoisture, you definitely need to add in protein - it's kind of an either/or situation - either slow down the moisture, or add in the protein. :yep: Good point.

Hey Mook. I'm also having porosity issues. I bought Roux Porosity Control Conditioner to see if that helps me.

I didnt think it was possible either because i was having serious dry hair issues, but when I joined the DC challenge to try to get a handle on the dry hair part, I got overmoisturized. I bought the Joico kpack and it was all good.

I have to wear a shower cap with conditioner for a full 24-36 hours before my hair even begins to somewhat THINK about approaching being over-moisturized. :lachen:It never feels dry to the touch...but never revolts against extra moisture.... It's weird.

:yep:Yes I had overmoisturised problem because of cowashing and moisturising every 2 days!
I started to cowash once a week and never had it again!

when i DC'd 3x a week...and that time i whole head baggied. now i DC 2x a week and baggy maybe 1x a week (just the ends) and its all good. i didnt know what mushy was till i took the plastic cap off and felt it.
