Naturals...Just a few Hair Questions Please

Hello.
I have a dilemna. I've been battling between blow drying, flat ironing, and just plain natural.
I would like to know how some of you manage your hair after washing? What exactly do you do once it's washed?
All answers would be greatly appreciated.
How do you blow dry? Do you use anything special?
How do you Flat Iron? Do you use anything to protect the hair?
What's the purpose?
And another thing...If you go natural, how do you wear your hair.
Thank you.

I co wash add conditioner..shake and let it dry. I usually get the results in my siggy pic sometimes bigger sometimes more puffier. I dont blowdry or flat iron sense I dont feel te need to. Maybe sometime next year.

I wear braidouts 24/7. Basically I braid my hair in about 16 individual braids after washing and I let it airdry. The next day I unbraid it and usually wear it up or in a pontail.
To blowdry my hair, I take small sections, brush thru with my denman d3 brush (crucial) then hold the section stretched out by the ends. I run the mouth of the blower up and down the section. My hair gets pretty straight this way. If I want it silkly straight, I have to take thin sections, like 1/2 inch by 2 inches and smooth it with my FHI ceramic flat iron.

;) Hey thanks caligirl, I like this option. It takes quite awhile to braid, but it seems very "smart", I'll try it.
I've done braidouts before but not quite the same way. My hair is getting thicker so I'm always struggling and complaining....really complaining about it!

After shampooing, I do the following:
  • Condition with a good moisturizing conditioner
  • Pat (not rub) dry with a towel
  • Add a good moisturizer and comb it through with a wide-tooth comb
  • Put my hair in a few ponytails and let airdry
  • Once dry, I usually pin or pull the front portion of my hair up and let the back hang.
  • I don't use blow dryers, flat irons, or curling irons on my hair.
BTW - I wear braid extensions quite often, but this is my normal routine when I don't have them in.

Thanks IrisDaVirus,
I can't use any shampoos anymore. I cannot even use conditioners anymore unless they are re-constructors. If I do, my hair comes out in droves..I don't know why, and when it dries I don't know what to do with it. It's gotten thicker. That is why I flat iron once a month, but I think I will increase that now.

I never blowdry or flat iron. It's unneccesary. I don't wash with shampoo and condition wash regularly. After I con-wash, I wear my hair loose in a wash and go or chunky afro. I also wear styles like twists and braids (with no extra hair added) and that style transitions into twists and braidouts for me to wear next.

How do you blow dry? Do you use anything special?
Rarely now. I just sorta hold the dryer (with a foam attachment to minimize heat/flyaways sold at jessicurl.com) under my head and grab a few sections and blowdry them from the top for a little bit. I USED TO blow dry it till it was totally dry (and it seemed a lot longer/bigger then) but I'm too lazy for that now.

Usually I just let it airdry after dabbing with a towel or even not dabbing with a towel. The result is a lot of shrinkage but oh well.

I've never flat ironed but I get blow outs....used to do it a LOT but now only once every 3-4 months.

Thank you.

I shampoo, condition, comb with the conditioner on it. Apply a leave in conditioner and light gel (I like Oyin Shine and Define and the Kiss My Face gel). I just wear it "out" and sometimes in ponytails or headbands.

Thanks for sharing your info. I appreciate it;)

I usually wear my hair in a ponytail or two. After washing, I apply leave-in (giovanni direct) and put my hair into a ponytail while still damp. I just let it airdry. If I want it to look flatter/smoother I'll tie a scarf on the front for a little while.

Aww thanks ladies  Its only this easy becsue my hair is still relatively short...after I get some inches Im pretty sure I will need more than conditioner just to get by

After I wash, before I am even out of the shower, my hair is up in a ponytail and forgotten about until the next morning. Sometimes I run a little Proclaim oil in it, but otherwise I leave it alone. Sometimes I put a headband on to make the ends and roots lay smoother OR to camoflague (sp??) the krinkles that show up when air-drying.
When I do decided to wear straight, I almost always do it after airdrying, but on occassion I use the blowdryer, like if I find out I am going somewhere later that I want to show out.
Don't use anything to blow dry- because there is most likely Proclaim in my hair by that point, and I use Silk Elements Silken Child Silken Creme to iron (with a regular curling iron- no flat iron.).

I don't blowdry but I have flat ironed. I've only done it a couple of times but what has worked for me was to layer my products. I use a cream straightener to airdry then I flatironed w/redkin heatglide. I had no damage afterwards.

Normally I wear my hear in pony/puffs or twists. I've only done 1 successful twistout thus far, I'm still working on getting a technique down so they look even. The one sucessful twistout was a fluke:ohwell:

I think whatever works best for you is what you should do. I like the straight look every once in a while but I won't do it more than 3 or 4 times a year.

Same here. I don't use heat unless applying a rinse. I don't feel that heat is really neccesary in getting healthy hair. I don't apply heat to my conditioners. Believe me when I say I have very soft hair so I don't believe heat is neccesary for conditioning. I also don't flat iron my hair. I usually wear it in twists, pulled back in a slick low puff or shake and Go.

I put some gel in it, shake it out and that's about it. :p I'm not big on the whole "styling" thing. But if my hair just Will. Not. Behave! for some reason, Elasta QP Glaze works miracles for putting in defined curls.

The biggest "maintenance" part of my routine comes from overnight moisturizing (Elasta QP Recovery, which I also use right after shampooing), pre-shampoo treatment (warm coconut oil; I shampoo about once a week), and post-shampoo moisturizing. I also do daily conditioner washes with Suave Milk and Honey, with a little coconut oil and honey mixed in. I've also learned that combs are the devil for my super-coily hair, so I stick to finger-detangling whenever it's humanly possible.

How do you blow dry?
I don't.

How do you Flat Iron
I don't. *g* I might try it someday, though, if I'm feeling really patient.

And another thing...If you go natural, how do you wear your hair.
My icon shows my signature style. I'll sometimes pin it back with some cute clips or barrettes or use a different headband, but really, that's my staple.

After washing, I put a leave in (Salerm 21) and coconut oil in my hair. I then air dry with my hair in two ponytails. Once my hair has dried some, I'll put a moisturizer such as MyHoneyChild Sweet Almond hair milk or ORS Olive Oil hair lotion on and braid up the ponytails.

I don't blowdry at all.

I flat ironed for the first time in almost two years last weekend and I used BioSilk's Silk Therapy to protect my hair from the heat of the Maxiglide.

My daily hairstyle is a bun. Rarely do I wear my hair out. I like to keep things nice and simple. Although, I think I'm going to try a shake and go come this Spring/Summer.:)
