OP, you've been given a lot of great advice here, but I wonder if the problem you're having isn't a porosity issue?
As I understand it, the ends of the hair are the oldest, most fragile and often most exposed. Therefore, the cuticles can lift and cause the ends to split and become damaged.
Consider trying Roux Porosity control.
My hair is not very porous at all but in the past my ends have been less than pertty. I use the shampoo from time to time and my ends are a lot better!
