Do you get it straightened and have it done professionally?

Do you have it done professionally with it NOT straightened (is it wet or dry?)

Do you do it yourself instead? If so how (put it in twists or braids first dry?)

I could use some advice! :) Trying to get out of the whole blow out+trim mode if possible!

I used to get my hair professionally straightened (blow dry & flat iron) but I had some pieces remain straight  so I had to resort to trimming on my own to prevent further damage.

Now I trim with my hair in medium size braids and I trim the very tip. Every six mnths for me also.

Natstar

ETA: My hair dries and then I braid and trim. It's pretty easy.

I clip the ends of my twists (dry hair). I never go to a professional and have it done. I don't straighten it to trim (I avoid heat at all cost). Good luck with trimming your ends and be sure to use sharp scissors.

Wow thanks for all the responses ladies! Good to know it's possible to do it (properly) on my own.

What are "the ends" though lol? I mean how can I tell how much I should cut? Just decide and be consistent with all the other sections?

And how many braids or twists do you end up with/how do you section it (like say 4 on top, 4 on bottom or some in middle, etc.?

I probably only trim an inch to an inch and a half a year. So maybe 1/2 inch every six months. Depends on the condition of your ends. For me whatever looks frizzy. LOL

ITA! For me I have my hair in many two strand twists (my staple style) and when I am going to take them down I section them and begin snipping only like 1/8-1/4 off the ends--just the part that is fuzzy, raggedy, or 'straight'. :) (when my ends need a trim the ends of my twists look straight)

HTH some

As I am twisting my hair, I snip off an eighth of an inch or whatever feels raggedy as I go. I only trim when nessesary though. I am finding that since I stopped using heat, I havent had the need to trim and its been 2 months now since my last trim and the use of heat,

I guess I'm in the minority. I actually brush out a section of my hair, hold it taught and trim like half an inch--then I twist in a big twist and continue like that till I'm done with my whole head. It works everytime (but I have no need for perfectly even hair since I never wear it straight).

aj response:
-nope. I don't trust the stylist anymore to "trim" my hair. Nor will I straighten to trim. It doesn't work all that well for me.

aj response:
- nope, still looking for a good natural stylist in my area that won't charge an arm and a leg.

aj response:
-Yes, as I twist damp hair, w/ my whipped pudding in it, off go the ends. I have been doing it this way for almost 4yrs.

I wish you the best of luck w/ this :)

just place in medium size twists and snip off the ends. its the easiest way for me.

Your hair is amazing btw! Excellent album! Do you recommend doing this wet or dry?

Thanks for all the advice anyone. I may venture into a trim next week using twists (haven't done them in a looong time)...still debating over wet versus dry.

thanks.

i've done both wet and dry and both work fine for me.

I am in the minority as well, I straighten my hair to have it trimmed. I do this about 3 times a year and have it done by a professional.
