Naturals....Do you ever go to the salon?

You know, when I think about it, is it possible that we have in the past totally abdicated our "crowning glories" to other people and expected them to be totally responsible for them? Would you hand your most expensive jewellry to a stranger that you have known for a long time and said "Keep my "bling bling" at your place!" Have you seen some of the places that "some" individuals who claim to have so much professional knowledge, skill and talent...take care of peoples' crowns in?....some are like a bloody zoo!...and not to hygenic either!...as for CARE...they are rude and indifferent, talk to you like you are their servant!....instead of a paying customer...jack up your hair...use the SAME COMBS ON YOU THAT THEY have used on their last few customers, neglected to totally clean and sanitize their sinks between customers to assure that no relaxer residue is smeared on the sink against which you rest your "kitchen area",...and fail to inform themselves of what we are learning on the boards...because they do not have time because they have too many customers to worry about individuals!!!Perhaps that is why we see them and so many hard working hard paying sisters walking around with jacked up crowns unfit for the Queens we are ..........(moderators to the side whispering..."she is is really on a tangent...o.k. Off the soapbox .....Mahalialee!...somebody grab her!...") Mahalialee carted off.... still so steamed she is sweating a wild big ole afro and waving a bottle of activator...

I used to visit one the first time I went natural...I ended up doing my hair myelf. They were a bit more costly in money AND time...

No, I'm currently doing everything for myself, trims, styling, and all. I don't know how to do much past fros, 2-strands, and flattwists though

The lady who did my big chop (in a natural hair salon btw) jacked it up. I should have went to a barber but oh well. Maybe one day I'll feel like getting some intricate style that can last a couple weeks, but until then, I will continue to do my hair myself. Even if I decide to straighten..I will figure out how to do that myself! (Yeah I didn't like that experience either)

Even when I was permed, I avoided salons. I could not see giving up an entire Saturday, plus major dollars for something I could do myself, on MY schedule and to MY specifications.
Now that I'm natural (since August '02), not only am I continuing to save valuable time and money, but my hair is really thriving.
I think that a trip to a hair salon should be a special treat, not an obligation.
I have gotten most of my info from "Let's Talk Hair" and from Nappturality.com. These two sources have saved my life!

i haven't been to a salon since the day of my Big Chop. that's one of the main reasons why i went napptural. no more lengthy salon visits or sitting in someone's kitchen waiting and waiting and waiting . . .

I would like to get my hair done in a spiral set. I would try to do it myself but don't know what kind of rollers, rods or straws

to use. I got the idea from the Curve site from a pic of someone wanting to how it may look without taking the big plunge. Could someone help me with this? thank you

I'm newly natural and I plan on going to the salon for things I cannot do...cornrows, flat twists, comb coils, but I also want to learn how to do a lot of these things myself. Luckily I know a nappturality member who works at a natural salon near me and she will be doing my hair for anything I cannot do myself...she even said she'd teach me how to cornrow. My fiance also went to her and has said that she is the only stylist he will go to from now on.

Last time I was in a salon was 2002 for a trim on hair that I flatironed by myself. That's really the only reason I'd step foot in a salon nowadays is for a trim.

No, I have never been to a salon since going natural, not even for my big chop ( I shaved my head myself ). I was doing my own hair when relaxed and I didn't see any reason to stop since going natural. I've learned much about my hair from boards and from knowledge gained from trial and errors. I think I'm doing a pretty good job of taking care of my hair myself, so like someone mentioned before...if it ain't broke, don't fix it. LOL!!
