Naturals: Curl Definining Techniques, Please

Dear ladies:

I have PLENTY of products! I need help in developing a technique/routine to maximize my curls/coils. Is it the use of a wide-tooth comb? Combing in the shower? Denman brush? Shaking it at certain time? Cold water rinse? Now that the weather's getting colder, I can't wet my hair every morning. Other things that may contribute to this concern of mine is that it's only been about 8 weeks since my BC and I'm scheduled for a trim this weekend....
I shampoo and deep condition once a week. I should add that I had been using a deep conditioner w/cones but I didn't really catch that until last week. At the next shampoo, I plan to deep condition w/out cones. Also, I am scheduled for a trim this Friday. About 8-9 weeks after the BC.... sometimes I get those knots and I can see a bit of ragged end on the curl/coil?

This may not be enough info to go on... Please let me know what more info I can provide.

Thanks in advance.

I know that adding a lot of product in while I do a shake-n-go helped with defining my kinks and coils. But, like you mentioned, it's getting cooler.

I posted something awhile back about how double strand twisting your hair brings out the curls. Maybe since it's getting chilly, you can twist your own hair. When I first went natural years ago, double strand twists were my staple. I noticed that eventually, my hair became naturally "texturized" and all these curls, waves and coils started popping out. I would wear my hair twisted for about 2-3 days and then wear a twist out for another week or so, then I would wash and start all over again. My hair really got trained and it would hold the crimps/coils really well.

Hope this helps!

For me I have two methods:
Using the denman during conditioning
Leaving a little conditioner on the hair after washing
Applying kinky-curly custard and shake, shake, shake

2nd method:
Wash and condition hair without combing or brushing
Applying any product and shake, shake, shake!

Tiffcurl, you are so pretty!

I do Bublnbrnsuga's second method. That works the best for me. And, Bublnbrnsuga--thank you! You are SO pretty. I stalk your photos. congrats on 4 years and the home.

i dont shake my hair but thats pretty much what i do.

also i apply ALL products i plan on using in the shower after i detangle and condition then do a little 20 second rince to let the water run down my hair (for some odd reason this seems to set my waves/curls) and i will not touch my hair at all till its completly dry.

ITA she is very pretty! She looks like an actress but I can't quite put my finger who it is.:scratchch

To the OP: I really like kinky curly curling custard. I've also noticed that I sometimes get my best curl definition a day or two after conditioning. For a day or two I comb very little and spritz with S-curl and then all of the sudden it looks perfect, that only lasts for like a day then I have to re-wash but just wanted to mention this.

While in the shower I comb the front portion of my hair forward and the back and sides down. I then apply S-curl and have gotten great results. I think there may be a pic of the first time I used this technique in my album.

I also put the product in while my head is down and found that gravity pulls the curls up a bit and allows me to get the s-curl to the roots which allows for maximum definition.

Interesting that you mention roots. I noticed that I miss getting my roots.... Does this make a big difference?

Gettin to the roots allows for the whole head to look curlier instead of frizzy with curls on top. IMO.

I brush my hair w. my denman brush as I Cw.
I also shingle w IC sparkelites...
My longest curl def lasts w the Blue IC gel. I put a lil bit in brush n go. The downside to that is that it retains water. My hair takes forever to dry w the blue gel tho..

The key to curl definition for me is #1-Noodlehead curl creme, #2- brushing that through with a denman brush, #3-flipping my head upside down and shaking to form the curls, #4-for chunky curls I take small sections and twist around my fingers w/ a little more product, I call it a curl set and it lasts for about a week. I got this curl thing down packed now, whooo hooo!

OK, I am going to Sally's to try out Noodlehead...hope all the hype is worth it!

Did you try the Noodlehead. I'm so obsessed with that stuff!!! Love your hair btw.

I did try it...I love it. I normally need like 42 products for my hair to somewhat behave, but my hair really likes this stuff. Thanks for the info!

YW. My hair is the same way. I'm so happy because now I only need just one product!
