I wanted to get out and have a good time. So for a change I'd blow-dried and flat ironed my hair. Had some new shoes on and put on a cute shirt. I just KNEW I looked good.

At my party place of choice, I danced, and had a lil' drink, and I danced, and I sweated, until..

my sweet little subconscious Fairy Napmother whispered urgently in my ear, "B, if you don't get home soon, your hair will revert and your cute little barrette will be hanging on for dear life. You've only a few minutes!"

I ran to the bathroom, and out of breath, I discovered oh no!--that one side of my cute flip had already begun morphing into a shapeless sponge!

I went back to my little table, grabbed my belongings. To the guy I'd just met, I sputtered out some lame explanation of why I had to get home suddenly.

You had to endure this story because I need some answers to some questions:

1. If you wear your natural hair straightened to an event where there will be humidity or sweat involved, what style is "reversion"-friendly? Because the style I had would have made me look like Sho-nuff

OR
2. If you don't straighten it, and go out, what is your favorite after five curly style?

The way you told this story made me laugh out loud. But I can imagine it was less than funny when it happened!

I don't straighten my hair. If I want to go out and look cute, I usually do a wash and go, or put half up and leave the rest down. I use very pretty hair accessories, too...shiny, glittering things.

Man, if I had your texture (and length), I could have more options! You have very pretty hair.

Thanks for the suggestions

Next time carry a cute bill clip or barrette that matches your outfit so that you can pull it together and twist it up into a nice french roll/bun, add the clip and it should look cute depending on the length of your hair and/or shinkage. LOL, the story was cute and funny.

Accessories are my best friends when I go out because I don't have enough length to pull it back into a bun or ponypuff yet. Wearning a chunky fro (or twist out) with a pretty clip or flower gets a lot of attention. The bigger my hair, the better when I'm out.

If I'm wearing an afro puff, a pretty metallic scarf or something that spices up my outfit (I usually wear black when going out) works out really well. I use more styling products when I know I'll be around humid places to prevent frizz.

My hair easily reverts to back to coily (I remember from when I was a kiddie) so I probably wouldn't straighten at a place where frizz is likely.

Cheleigh, and BWideeyes, Thanks! Hadn't even thought of going the accessories route! That's why it's always good to ask :-)

I'd just hate to think that I'll always have to cut my nights short (especially here in Oklahoma).

...putting some clips and other accessories on my shopping list for next time

for me, straightening my hair and doing an activity that calls for a lot of sweating is a NO NO! Even my beloved maxiglide is no match for the power of reversion! If i don't want to go looking like a member of the supremes i usually rock some sort of textured look, like a twist out braid out,etc when i'm out clubbing. and i agree with the others it's definitetly about accessorizing !

If my hair is flat ironed and I'm going to the club, I usually do a ponytail. I actually like how my ponytail gets big and bushy as the night goes on. I think its sexy (like my kinky side is coming out, lol).

LOL, @kinky side comming out.

Off Topic @ jasmine26, Your hair is absolutely gorgeous. LOL so that's what 2 years natural looks like?! I am never relaxing again, ever!

Girl I know exactly what you mean. I had that happen to me today kind of. I've decided to just keep it natural and damn the haters. Right now it's in a twists and I will undo them in the morning.

I'm quite tired of fighting my hair to be something it is not. I have breakage all over the place. My hair is just not what I want it to be, but it did grow an inch in two months so I'm happy about that.

I've just decided that I'm going to have to love it in its bushy glory. Pressing it is just too much for me right now and the worry of it's reversion is not something I care to keep thinking about.

After taking my hair from it's braids, they tangled and started to dread up and I seriously contemplated a perm. But when I picked my son up from children's church this past Sunday, there was a beautiful little black girl with a bush curl pattern of hair all down her back that almost covered all of her little face. She was too cute. I couldn't stop staring.

That got me back on track!

Can't wait until my hair does that!

AHAHHAHAHHHAHHAHAHHAH:lachen: :lachen: SORRY Gullahgirl that was too funny oh man i hear you i really think that if you gonna wear your hair straight to your club a bun or a braid is the best choice. I find that in my case when i wear it natural, the most sweat friendly style is a twist out. i avoid to separate the twists too much, just take them out cause when i m gonna sweat a lot they will kinda mesh and make it look better on their own:lol: :lachen: i never wore the straight look but if i do i will try not to sweat at all or not dance a lot   man i wonder what can be reversion-friendly when wore straight. I have thick hair so even relaxed when i used to sweat to much not only my curls were gone but my whole head looked a mess. Twistouts so far still leave me looking like something:lol:

You know what? I'm tired of fighting my hair too. Recently I've thought about how stressful it would be for a white woman with straight hair to try to put her hair in a fro on an ongoing basis. You know, she'd get a really tight, curly perm and be trying to pick it out. And the minute her straight roots came in she'd need a touch up. When it rained she'd look like a wet poodle. I don't know, just thinking about it that way puts it in perspective how stressful it can be to fight your texture, always trying to make it do what is does not naturally do. I'm glad you didn't relax. That little girl was your angel that day.

That pretty much puts it into perspective. :yep:

Really good points.

I LOVE your story Gullahgirl - very well written! It brought back some memories too!

If I wear my hair out and it's going to be humid, I always choose a braidout so my hair works with the reversion. I also use Aveda Anti-Humectant which does help, although it isn't 100%..

-I have only pressed my hair a few times. I went to a stylist that did my hair, and it was so straight and silky, it looked like a perm. I thought it was gonna last a really long time. I have no clue on what to do w/ straight hair, so I washed it out. I know that she used Mizani when she was doing it. the shower steam didn't seem to even bother it on the 2nd or 3rd day. It was cut into a layered "flippy" cut

OR
2. If you don't straighten it, and go out, what is your favorite after five curly style?
-I will wear twists, a puff, twist out, or my version of the french roll, curled, half up half down. I wear it in all kinds of ways. I don't really wear my hair out that often. It takes a long time to twist, and I don't want to have to do it.I just do a bunch of different styles w/ the twists in

That was so funny and so true, THanks for sharing ---something to consider. I think I have hair like Joan on the Girlfriends its very curly and I dont' put anything in it but leave in conditioner and natural oils. thats it and it curls up. So I think I am not even going to try the straight look, I would hate to be out and be worrying about my hair.

Yeah I gave up fighting my hair a LONG time ago
Trying to turn this...

to this.....

was a joke and a fight I almost always lost. I like twists outs and braidouts when Im going out. And mostly always accessorized ;) And twists up into a nice puf is cute too.

Well I've got two-strand individuals in my hair now. Maybe this coming Friday I'll rock a twist out with some nice accessories.

Back to the ball for me!
(Now if I could only work on realizing this Prince Charming thing)

Bumpin my post to see whether there are any other ideas since we've had a chance to test out the HOT HOT SUMMER!

:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: That story just made my night! My hair is relaxed and when I go out with all this humidity I end up with an afro so don't feel too bad! I think twist outs and afro puffs are a must with this humidity. Don't fight it

You ain't neva lie!!!! I was crackin up!:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:
especially @ the sho-nuff part...

Ok so to answer your question. Im a newbie natural so the only style Ive really experimented with is the twistout and i LOVE it!. If it rains, if its drizzling, if it's humid- I walk out with confidence now instead of fear! My hair now LOVES this type of weather- its like a free splash of moisture. So I vote for a cute twistout!- Depending on the thickness and length of your hair, it would probably cut to leave your hair in twists with a cute barret or something, and then the next day once your hair has dried a bit, then do a twist out- you get kill two birds with one stone!

-- If I straighten, I'm not gonna go anywere to sweat it out. Shoot, it takes toooo long to straighten my hair

OR

2. If you don't straighten it, and go out, what is your favorite after five curly style?

-- fav after 5 curly style is anything with a headband, whether a plastic type headband or a stretch type. This way my hair is outta my face & can do it's own thang (behind the headband)!
