Well currently I cant do too much I'm sporting a TWA!
Mostly I use headbands and click clacks. I just recently haid the front braided but didn't like it too much so I did flat twist instead.
What about doing comb coils or twist on your hair, or even the flat twist? YOu could also try braid outs and roller sets.
I only detangle my hair when wet with conditioner using a vent brush or the my Denman brush. I do this once per week.

I have pics in my album...your welcome to take a look.

I'm kinda struggling with the style issue myself. I only wear my hair in protective buns. Boring but effective. Braids, twists, coils, cornows etc. won't work in my very conservative work atmosphere. Which is fine I don't care for those styles on my head anyway. For tangles and knots I condition wash with Pantene S&S daily. I started giving myself cellophane rinses (Sebastians Colourshine) 2 months ago. They combined with the daily CO rinse and the Jilbere Shower detangling comb have helped tremendously. I’m still perfecting other aspects of my regime.

Transitioning - I wish I'd known about natural hair care boards before doing it. I can't really speak to that phase, since I basicallly just let it grow out for a few months, until I felt I had enough natural hair to walk around without looking like a boy (I do NOT recommend this method). Life got much better after the Big Chop, though.

Routine - One of the reasons I went natural was to take advantage of my hair's versatility, so I like to wear it loose, and change the style with my mood. I wish I were a better sylist, but usually stick to shakes, ponytails, twist-outs and the occasional blow-out. Water is my best styling tool, so I wet my hair nearly every day.

Products - I actually get a rush, trying out new stuff! Lately I've been experimenting with Carol's Daughter products, and IC Hair Polisher is my absolute favorite new product - truly outstanding as a gel replacement. I'll never be without it again.

There's lots of very specific information (including a forum for transitioners) at www.nappturality.com. I think you'll find a lot naturals using both that board and this one.

I'm transitioning, and I'm in the same position you are! I check out hairstyles all the time on the internet. I'm a 4b, so my styling options may not be exactly the same as yours, but I wear my hair pressed in between braids. This could damage your hair, so I don't recommend it, but I know my hair and a little heat is fine.

I still haven't mastered detangling, but next time I will try Biolage Detangler and one of those Denman brushes. I keep my hair in loose plaits while washing and I think I will keep it in loose plaits while conditioning as well and tighter plaits while drying.

Right now I have a sew-in weave that I am not happy with, so I don't suggest that. I like some of the style ideas of Motowngrl. Do a google search. She has a great site.

I want full, healthy, bra-strap length hair when pressed that makes a huge puff when dried naturally.

I have a long way to go b/c I only have 4 in. of natural hair now, and about 5 of relaxed ends. I keep my hair in braid/weave prison, so I don't have to deal w/ 2 textures.

I wear my hair in a twist-out for my every day hair style. I have pictures of my twist-out in my album. I have 4a/4b textured hair. I wash condition and twist-out once a week. My twist-outs last about 5-7 days. Sometimes I seperate my twists a lot, sometimes I separate my twists a little.

Here is my basic routine.

Shampoo - Creme of Nature, Nature's Gate Biotin, Ebone Shea butter, Aubrey Organics Island Natural line.

Conditioner- ORS Hair Mayo, Nature's Gate Jojoba, Aubrey Organics Island Spice creme rinse.

Styling - Carol's daughter Healthy hair butter, Carol's daughter Mimosa Hair honey, Paul Mitchell styling foam.

Daily moisture - ORS Olive oil creme. I apply a tiny bit every day to my ends. It keeps them nice and moist. My hair rarely breaks off.

I am trying to convert over to all natural products. We will see how that process goes.

My hair goal is to have a 15" all around afro. I recently cut off all of my hair a few months ago. I got bored one day and took the scissors to my hair. My cut looks great but I really miss my hair. The Bargello plan is really working for me.

I deal with shrinkage by using tiny perm rods at the ends of my twist-outs. I then sit under the dryer with soaking wet twists for about 30 minutes. When I do this it keeps me from having a lot of shrinkage. I only twist my hair at night so it can dry while I sleep. I fluf my hair with my fingers in the morning.

I spend about 2 to 4 hours on my hair every week in total. That includes washing and conditioning. So that averages out to be anywhere between 10-30 minutes a day.

I think twist-outs, braid-outs, and flat twists are the best styles for transitioning.

how do you wear your hair on a regular basis? (puffs, cornrows, free form fro, buns, braids, etc)

Well, I just had cornrows, that i took out, for a week i have been doing the free form fro, and tomorrow I am doing twists. I can't wait till I can make a pony puff.

what are your routines, and hair products?

When in braids
I rinse every night, and then use worlds of curls activator on the braids for moisture. Wrap my braids in a doo rag, and that's it. Once per week, I dilute shampoo and conditioner and rinse my scalp with it.

When not in braids
One day per week:
Hot oil treatment with Hot six oil (1hr)
Shampoo with Sebastian Laminates
Deep Condition with ORS Hair mayonaise 1hr(this will change soon)
Moisturizing Conditioner (Kenra, Sebastian, or Jason Sea kelp)
Nexxus Humectress as a leave in
6 days per week:
Moisturizing conditioner wash (same conditioners as above)
Leave in (same as above)

With hair in twists
I do the same thing I as with the hair not in braids, but when it is that one day per week where I shampoo, I take the twists down before I do all that stuff.

For those who transitioned or transitioning right now how are you or did you go about it?

I didn't transistion long, but I basically wore my hair in a bun, or did a rod set ( which was cute)

Are there other transitioning styles you guys could recommend?

Flat twists to conceal the new growth. Roller or Rod sets, Twist on wet hair, and dry and do a twist out. Braids out show more length. You can also get a natural phonytail.

How do you deal with shrinkage and tangling?

I love the shrinkage, but if you want to show more length, do a braid out., or try to do a roller set on medium to large size rollers, and put in a low ponytail, to stretch it out. Tangles, well i am still working on that, but my shower comb, and sebastian titanium protector help make combing less painful. I also think I may need to trim. I haven't trimmed since I chopped in Jan.

Who are your natural haired inspirations?

I have so many, but I especially love the big twists that mercedes martinez (jazzyfatnastees) has. They are absolutley beautiful.

What are your hair goals?

One day I hope my hair getsd long enough to recreate those large twists that mercedes wears.

Hello!

I mainly wear my hair in twists as that's the style I can do all by myself, other than an afro puff or two  I love cornrows, but I'll go back to em when my scalp condition improves. Every now and then I'll wear a twist-out and annoy the people sitting behind me at the cinema.

As for products, I'm trying to pare it down to a bare minimum. I shampoo with Kemi Sava'ge or Elasta QP Creme Conditioning Shampoo (both non SLS) and condition with Desert Essence Shea Butter conditioner. I do this every 4 days. I try to moisturise with Profectiv Mega Growth nightly and use hot oil treatments before shampos. I'm going to give the "no-poo" thing a proper try one of these days.

I transitioned for about 10 months, with little breakage. I wore my hair in cornrows (my own hair) and sometimes individual braids (with extensions) then cut off the 4-5 inches of relaxed hair when I got fed up.

I actually like my hair shrinkage, I work with it by twisting my hair wet now that I've learned to live without blow drying my hair. Cos my hair is mainly in twists, I don't get much problem with tangling.

I haven't got many "hair idols", apart from some people I may pass in the street or spot on the Web. I loved Lauryn Hill's locks though.

My hair goal... an ever bigger fro, of Angela Davis proportions! Maybe down to bra strap when stretched (not into pressing my hair anymore).

Good luck on your hair journey!

how do you wear your hair on a regular basis? (puffs, cornrows, free form fro, buns, braids, etc)
My hair length is 5inches in back, 6 to 7inches on top and sides. So I no longer have a twa but it does not quite hang down. So I usually wear my hair in two strand twist and twist out on the weekend or "special occassions".

what are your routines, and hair products?
I am on what is called the no-poo routine. Which means I wash my hair with conditioner at least once a week and I rinse on the days in between. I usually rinse with my twist in. I don't like to conditioner wash with twist in because it gets too fuzzy and tangled and my hair begins to lock.
At week 4 or 5 I shampoo and deep condition. I also do a coconut oil and honey heat treatment during that 4 week span. I usually use Pantene for Relaxed and Natural Hair, or V05 conditioners. For my shampoo day, I use Nuetrogena shampoo(for my psoriasis) along with Kericare Shampoo and Lekair Cholesterol for deep conditioning.
I only comb my hair when I shampoo. For the conditioner washes and rinses, I finger comb only if needed.

For those who transitioned how did you go about it? Are there other transitioning styles you guys could recommend?
I transitioned with straw sets but that was before I found natural hair care sites. If I had to do it again I would have just done braid outs or twist outs along with micro braids and cornrows. When I had at least two to three inches of hair, I cut the perm off and wore it in a twa or two strand twist/twist outs.

How do you deal with shrinkage and tangling?
I only comb and manipulate my hair when it is wet w/ lots of conditioner. I usually style my hair wet (twist) and once it dried I try not to manipulate it much. Since I rinse daily, if I want a different style I will style with my fingers while wet. If I wear a twistout, I don't wet or rinse until I am ready to no-poo again. As for shrinkage, the twists really stretch my hair out, but because I am more concerned with growth, I rinse my hair daily and don't have a problem with shrinkage. Believe me when it is time to show my length I want to have something to show. It is still too short for me. Maybe when I have 10 inches all around I will worry about reducing shrinkage.

Who are your natural haired inspirations? What are your hair goals?

All the women at nappturality.com are my inspiration. My goals to have a healthy head full of hair. I know it will grow long because I had long hair when I had a perm.

To sum it all upLess combing and stress to the hair + Mucho moisture and protective styles = Hair retention and length

ETA: I use Kemi Oyl Shea Butter Pomade to do my twist and Nature's Blessing on my scalp. These are the ONLY products that make my hair soft and hold in moisture.

never transitioned, did The Big Chop -

i wear my hair in twistouts or twists regularly - sometimes with a bandana or in two low puffs.

i dont know how long your hair is, or what sort of texture (like, if you have curl definition, you could always work with that) you have - but styles can range from shake and gos to comb coils to twists.

shrinkage - well, i have to work with it. I find the healthier one's hair is, the more shrinkage one gets. I tend to twist it overnight, and then loosen the twists in the morning, as it gets longer, the twists get bigger and easier to do.

tangling - i use the denman brush once a week - do a search on the board - but it really works.

natural hair inspirations? hmmmm - alot of them are on nappturality i like honey child's do, monicurl - their hair looks really thick and healthy.

Hair goals - i want my hair to be long enough to go into one - not a pony puff, not two low puffs - one comfortable puff. My hair can go into a puff now, but i have to gel the front down, and when it dries it shrinks and makes my head hurt! I want hair the length of honey child's!

Some other hair goals is to make my own hairstuff - the stuff from the states is difficult to get, and LUSH - although their stuff is good, the constant swaping and changing and discontinuing products are making me
