Naturals and these *&%$** knots!

So glad I asked this question! Ok.. so I'm gonna moisturize myself to death and be more diligent about braiding my hair.

By the way... Belladonna I LOVE the color of your hair. What did you use for that? I don't know why I'm asking since I'm too much of a poo putt to use a permanent color but it just looks so pretty on you.

Girl...I am totally impressed on your transition! Incredible.

I too am a "knotter". It is the nature of our natural hair. As it grows, it coils and curls on itself and eventually knots. Even though I know I shouldn't, I tend to pull them off. It is best to simply cut them off though.

This is something that will always happen with natural hair. Trims help, but because it is coily, curly, krinkly, etc...it will coil onto itself and make a knot.

No way to avoid it.

My strands have been knotting since 2002. :look:

Along with snipping off the knots, I braid my hair at bedtime. Loose hair encourages knotting.

i've learned to live with mine. i don't think there is a way to avoid them (well maybe wearing a really low cut) the longer my hair gets the more it knots around itself. I just keep trimming and taking care of my hair and ignore them. like someone said it's apart of having natural curly/coily hair.

I think I could use a good trim..I snipped alot of my hair off with regular scissors..bad I know..but that scab hair was driving me crazy.. I think once all the scab hair is gone I'll knot alot less than I do now.. I'll try to keep my ends more moisturized.. that should help.. right?

Thanks for starting this thread. Knotting doesn't only happen to you natural gurlz. My hair isn't relaxed straight and is somewhat texturized, and occasionally I find these knots at the ends of my hair too. It pisses me off because it makes me think there's something that I should be doing that I'm not, or something I shouldn't be doing that I am. I slather my ends with moisturizer to combat them. When I see knots I gently work through them to free the hair; on occasion, I'll just cut it out with trimmers. It looks like the ends curl inwards, if that makes any sense. :ohwell:

PB500,

Are you talking about the knots on single stands of hair or the knots that come from after a 2 strand twist out??? I have a probrem when I wear my twist out for about 2 or 3 days.. the normal shedding of my hair forms knot balls at the ends of my hair....sometimes I spend mornings pulling them out!! ARGH!!

Thanks Ennyaa. It is mainly Loreal Hi color in Vanilla champagne with hi-lights and Low lights. Just in case..... But I don't encourage it; if you want length.
Like I said, I just cut it and I keep cutting it!

as my hair gets longer and longer it knots more. Only one part of my head knots the most for some reason, the rest of my hair is virtually none. I learned that I have to comb my hair (wet in the shower with conditioner) every day in order to avoid most of them. No more waiting weeks at a time to comb my hair. It suffers :(

I responded based on my experience with single-strand knots. Single-strand knots are tiny and cannot be undone by hand or even with safety pins. Scissors are the only way to get rid of them.

I just live with those!! :-) I hate them also..but I would be cutting everyday!

Another supre knotter!! I only cut of it is a bunch of strands knotted together. Otherwise I just leave them a lone. These days I am using a condish with a lot of slip, and I am also wearing my hair in an old fashioned style whaer there are two twists on the head secured with bobbypins or combs along the way. I will sometimes do two strand twist in the front to get a curly look, but I make sure that my strands are lubricated with oul before I twist them so that they will come apart more easily. The more manipulation the more knots I get.
