Hi Ladies,

Okay so I'm closing in on 2 years of transitioning and there's pretty much no processed hair on my head. My hair is thicker, healthier, and longer than I can ever remember it being. (thanks largely in part to the wonderful ladies on this board. :notworthy)

But now I have another thing that's driving me up the wall and I thought I remembered seeing someone else mention it in a post a long time ago. The ends of my hair are very prone to getting these little knots in them. At first I thought I had split ends and tried to ignore it between my rather infrequent trims (2x a year.) But as I looked more and more closely I could see that they are actually little knots. Lately I've taken to snipping or snapping them off when I feel them, but of course then I worry that I'm doing damage when I should just leave it alone.

Has anybody else had to deal with this? If so what did you do? All in all my hair is doing well and growing right along, but these friggin things are driving me NUTS! :wallbash:

Heeeeeelp.

Congratulations on two years of transitioning!

I'm begining to learn to live them. Sometimes I sit in the mirror forEVER trying to cut them out, but for every one I cut, two replace it. :(

Thanks Once

Ugh... I can see myself headed toward "obssessed and in the mirror with scissors" mode. So I figured I better come in here and get a reality check.

Hi ladies! Have you tried a hair polish or cuticle smoother ? A good one has a lots of cones it. My hair used to tangle a lot and get a lot of knots but ever since I started using something to smooth my cuticle, that problem has gone!

I was using NTM Silk Touch Leave-in which has a lot of cones but it made my hair hard (cos it has protein) so I left it alone. Now I use 2 things - Loreal Vive Smooth Intense Masque (after my weekly protein conditioner) and Loreal Vive Smooth Intense Conditioner as a leave in, after which I use my UBH moisteriser because the Loreal Conditioner doesnt have enough oils. Both Loreal products smooth my cuticles nicely!

HTH!!!

OK... I'm a dunce.. what is NTM? Also are certain leave in's considered polishers or smoothers?

NTM=Neutrogena Triple Moisture. A hair polish is more like a hair gel that gives a lot of shine and gloss but has a lot of cones in it (dimethicone, trimethicone, for example). I tend to look for a leave-in or moisturising conditioner with a lot of cones instead of a hair polish because it doesn't moisturise. But a good hair polish will lay down your cuticles.

But does that prevent those annoying little knots?

Are you ladies ripping/combing/pulling/etc. these knots out while your hair is wet or dry???

I'm natural and I notice knots on my ends occasionally. I've learned to live with them because natural hair just seems to knot up no matter what you do to avoid them.

I do it when my hair is dry..rip them out.. I can't feel them when it's wet..my hair is thin/fine.

So when you're ripping them out--you mean you are ripping off the strand past the knot so you have a shorter piece of hair?

I just cut them sometimes...they're really annoying lol...but think about how many hairs you have on your head-- a few knots snipped away won't ruin it !:)

Thanks ladies, for answering. I've also been kinda breaking them off right above the knot. That picture of the knot is exactly what I'm talking about. Makes me mad that it leads to breakdown and there's not much I can do to stop it but I will try to be more tolerant of them since they sorta come with the territory. I'm loving my braidouts and puffs these days but maybe I'll have to revert back to braids for long periods to avoid the tangling and knots.

I either slather on some type of moisturizer and gently try to work the knots out or I just leave them be. The knots are going to happen regardless of what you do so why keep ripping or cutting them out? If you do that to EVERY one you have, you'll never see any progress. I've also noticed that sometimes knots that were once in a certain spot are no longer there. Do you think that throughout a week my hair may be unknotting itself with the assistance of manipulation?

Hmm..prolly..I really don't pay attention to where I'm ripping it out I guess..well, I don't know..I rip it down instead of up..I think.. Yah, I'm gonna try to stop doing that...it's kinda like a habit now..but I will try to stop.. I should be cutting them instead..or just leave them alone..

Use a reconstructor and follow it with a deep conditioner when you see LOTS of knotts. When you deep condition, put it on pretty thick and leave it on as long as you can stand it....a couple of hours. This will eventually stop them, or slow them down emmensely.

I agree moisture, to the point where you think you've done too much and keep the ends split free, a good detangling cond works for me. Biolage detangler or cholesterol cond.

i want an electron microscope! i wonder whats really going on with my hair that the eye can't see....
i want one too! though i may become compulsive with constantly looking through it! lmao

I just ignore them. I've come to learn that those knots on single hair strands are just part & parcel of having kinky hair. The number of knots that I get has been reduced since I stopped letting my hair airdy out loose (too curly) and always braid my hair before bed. I still get them though, sometimes 2 on the same strand. There's no way I could untangle them without breaking off my hair and they eventually get snipped off when I trim.

How do you let it airdry then?

Your hair is great btw! :);)

I get those knots as well. They are less of a problem when I am diligent about daily moisture and washing . I just cut off about 1 to 2 inches. So the comb is going thru better.
That will probably help too.
