Naturally Clumping Coils - About that

Bulletproof

After reading a thread that may or may not have told me what my hair type is:look:, and learning a characteristic that may or may not be an indicator of hairt type:look: the thing I want to know most about are these so called naturally clumping coils.

I always considered the clumps annoying and I guess bad like tangles even though the hair is not tangled. I want to know do people try to comb them out. I spend time finger combing them to separate but they love to clump so that just really probably does nothing. Actually truth be told I am probably creating bigger frizzier clumps by separating them. The things is the clumps are so poofy because thy are short, that I would never dare attempt a ponytail right now since mine are in the back half of my head. I guess my question is what to do you do to make them clump less or is that just how it will be until the hair is longer and hangs down on it's own?

 @ the bolded :lachen:

My hair clumps less when I detangle... but there is always something going on in there. I find that even on freshly detangled wet hair, some of the clumps and coils return on their own as the hair dries. My hair wants to draw back on itself and get shriveled and coily. That is the nature of my hair... it just like to shrivel down and chill out :)

The only way to get out all the clumps for me is dry combing or blowdrying. Neither of which I intend to do very much.

You're lucky your hair clumps...but I doubt anyone really tries to comb them out...from what I read, people try to define the 'clumps.'
My hair sort of looks 3c...but it just doesn't clump like a 3c would...which leads me to believe my hair has no real type??
or can hair not clumping be related to damage?

:wallbash: Yes that is it exactly. I guess I have to wait until it has a little length to hang down on it's own.
And you know why I phrased it like that, I am not trying to claim anything and get in trouble . Today I washed and air dried my hair. I didn't apply any leave in because I wanted to see what it does. I took hair samples from the sections in my head. I had 6 different curl/coil/wave types & sizes each section distinct. I said yup that's enough to tell me hair typing will get me nowhere. I did learn that what looks like a z in my head is definitely just a very loose wave.

Ahh maybe I should try to define but I think since I am transitioning it may be too early for that.

yeah, rockin a TWA but i like the few clumps that i do have. they're like tiny coils.

as it grows longer, my hair also clumps, especially in the back. i don't think it looks cute like that until it reaches shoulder length un-stretched. unless i have a really fab shingling, it looks unkempt to me, so i'm weaving and protective styling for now.

My hair only started to clump recently. When I was transitioning it never did.. I guess because of the relaxed hair at the ends. Then in the early stages of being a full natural it still didn't except when it was loaded with conditioner. Now as of late...it tends to clump more often. Go figure.

I've been trying to figure out what "clumps" are at all. Do you mean they tangle up or the hair had a tendency to form something like "proto" dreds, if you will? LOL...I need a visual aid or something.

Be aware that when your hair growns it may now grow down. My hair grows up and out, like Side Show Bob

Yup. Some folks' hair grows "down" and some "out". Even if they get tons of real length, the hair that grows "out" doesn't get weighed down into hanging by gravity, if you will. (LOL...does this make sense at all?)

My hair clumps on the bottom half and looks so nice. The top half tends to frizz more...I'm hoping it will start clumping as it grows more. :ohwell:

My hair clumps all over, and I like it. This is my 3rd time being natural, and the first time it's ever clumped.

The nape and crown areas form looser ringlets, everywhere else it's cute pen-spring coils. Kinky-Coily Curling Custard and Knot Today define it all like nobody's business...they give me an easy way to make sure that all of my clumps stay clumped, instead of frizzing up.

My hair clumps except for the wavier, coarser section at the crown. But detangling or any manipulation reduces my clumps everywhere.

I like clumps and eco styler gel gives me perfect frizz free clumps all over with zero effort.

I don't want clumps at my roots when I want to put my hair in a banana clip or a ponytail (not a puff) so I use my denman to detangle around the edges to clear it out a bit so I can slick the hair back. My hair needs water or lots of conditioner to make this happen the first day but once it dries in this style it is very easy to maintain.

If by clumping you mean that separate coils join up together to make one bigger coil, then yeah, my hair does that. Not all over or in any uniform way (like Neith's, her hair is awesome), but it does a little.

I just leave it be...that's what it does so I like it.

The way I explain it to myself is a bunch of my little coils decide to group themselves together and just form a clique. They hang out together and don't really check out what is going on elsewhere in my head. They don't tangle or not, it just seems like they should but in general for me they are pretty uniform. For my hair they don't seem to like being combed or disturbed, they just want to chill out together. I believe in the is 4b uncommon thread Nonie posted photos of clumping coils.

Maybe I will like it more as it grows out, I have a feeling that is all it is.

Do you only detangle/manipulate when wet or saturated?

why would you want to comb out clumps? thats what your hair does. it seems to me like if i combed out my clumps they would still form again because thats what they do. i have 3c hair.

I really don't understand "clumping" very well yet. I guess I have not read enough about how ethnic hair that's curly does what it does. But...you bring up an interesting thought that I have had more than a few times. Thank you for that.

When I first cut my relaxer off, my hair looked like a Jheri Curl in the front. As time passed, the front is still curlier than the sides...but the back has changed, and it has some definition that was not there at the beginning of the journey. This week, I have noticed yet another change in my hair.

Anyway... thanks for bringing this up. My question is:

Is clumping just another way to describe well-defined curls? I did Google it. but I'm curious to know what it means to LHCF members.

HHG to us all!

Yes, Clumping is basically a way to describe multiple strands that have wrapped around each other to create a well defined curl or coil.

all of my new growth clumps into tiny coils like this. i love them. when i separate them i could be mistaken for a 4b, because they turn into puff, but right after i wash, my coils are so cute and defined.

My new growth clumps into little coils and the only time I comb through them is when I am detangling (finger comb while rinsing out con and wide tooth comb after applying leave in). Once my hair dries, they all return but I know they are not tangled so I leave them be. Plus I   playing in them :yep:
