How do you go about stretching your hair out? I'm curious to see how my hair would look as an afro. Do I need to blow it out or can I just manipulate it now since it's dry? How do you do it?

Really good question. I don't wear an afro because I think you would have to blowdry your hair. I'm not sure though. I'm sure you'll get some responses. BTW...You always start good threads, bmoreflyygirl.

I have not worn a fro in years. I got too much hair to do that but all I did was pick the curls out.

I used something similiar to the K-cutter and it was big. It was bouncy and floppy. It blowed in the wind. My mum made me promise not to wear my hair that big again.

Why would you need a blowdryer? You can just use a comb but I will say you will loose hair because you are coming it dry. I lost enough hair to make wig but then I am a huge shredder.

You can also use a denman brush. It would look nice and perhaps you can keep some of your waves or curls.

Honestly, I think you would look fierce with a picked out fro.

LOL thanks I'm gonna try it but I might need to go wet my head. I have a Denman but every time i used it before I felt like I was ripping hair out. :ohwell: I don't wanna mess up my ends either.

Bmore:

Perhaps, the denman was taking out the hair that needed to shed.

I find the denman is the safest to brush out the hair. I love it.

I think you should maybe put some Vatika oil on your hair and then brush it out.

If you brush it out dry then the hair will be more floppy and bouncy. Personally I do not use anything on the hair so it is more floppy and bouncy. To give my hair sheen I just need to wash and deep condition well.

Here is another idea. Why don't you rollerset it and put in some good moisturizer and let it dry natural so the hair is nice and soft and then comb with the denman brush if you are worried about your ends.

Yet, honestly the fro will have more of a blow in the wind effect without product. Try washing and then deep conditioning and see what happens.

I hope you do the fro because with your face and nice skin..you would be fierce. You will give the fro a whole new meaning.

I stretch my hair in twists overnight, untwist it and shape it with my fingers. I'm not really a fan of the perfect basketball shaped fro LOL, my fro has some character LOL. I have combed dry (prefer not to do that) but my hair was drenched with moisturizer.

I don't usually wear a fro, but when I do it is after wearing a twist out.
I finger pick my dry twistout & then pick the roots-not thru to the ends.
HTH

I only wear chunky fros. I set my hair dry hair on twists and finger pick out.

Like Incredible1ne I'm not a fan of the basketball fro (for me) but I LOVE chunky afros. I get compliments on the chunky fro, so I think it works just fine.

in my Fotki i have pics of a fro i just did recently... i explain the steps under the picture captions. no heat involved... it's easy.

^^Will check out shortly! LOL @ basketball 'fros!!! I wear semi-chunky fros and like some ladies have suggested, I pick it out with my pic or my fingers.

ETA: LL, what's the 'Batia and Aleeza technique'?

these 2 ladies own a curly salon in Beverly Hills. this video link was posted on the HappyCurls website in a thread asking how we thought the technique would turn out on kinky-curly hair types. and since i have made this year a time of experimentation, i figured i'd be brave and give it a try. glad i did, i loved the results!

------ (off topic)Lady Libra, love your new avatar piC!!!:D

Anywho, I like twist out fros, if you did it with larger twists or braids, let it dry and then finger picked it out, it might work. Am I late, did you already try it?:ohwell:

HA! That's funny i do this everyday but without their products. The only difference: I brush with the conditioner cos otherwise the brush aint going nowhere! Oh and I don't shampoo. Did u see the washer SCRUBBING the girls hair like laundry in the river lol. I end up with defined coils from the denman that shrink up as it dries.

BMore, How did your fro turn out? I have a pic in my fotki of a blow dried one, it was high maintanence for the 20 minutes I wore it. Ever wonder why that 60s dude has a pick in his back pocket? EVERYTHING will try and flatten it and because the hair has little curl it didn't spring back out like my chunky/twistout fros usually do. You wouldn't believe the tangles from doin that to my hair. Plus I don't cut my hair even wen I trim it so it was decently round but not perfect.

Let us know how it turned out! (pref with pics lol)

I did. I just used my big comb and it looked dumb. :ohwell: So I ran some water on it and let it shrink back up. I'll try again.

my fro days are over it flops now :( but when i could wear one, I would twist my hair after washing and the next day mist it with water or leave in and comb it out with a wide tooth comb.

ETA: it really helps if you have a shape to your hair as well. As much as I didnt want to trim after the BC, I was tired of blending it and trying to hide longer areas and the short ones so it wouldnt look lopsided. So I trimmed after four months. It was an inch but my styles looked a lot better.

How many twists are you doing? I think my hair's too short. It would take me hours to twist the whole thing bc I'd have to make them small. I washed it again this morning and it's airdrying under my wig in 6 little ponytails. Hopefully that'll stretch it out some.

I did about 8 twists...and tied it down tight with my scarf the night before. It stretched the roots a lot. your hair is not too short. Oh and I applied a small amount of butter to my ends to avoid the straight roots kinky/knotty ends look.

HEY! I was all up in your album a couple days ago, lovely pics LL. Do you 'cold blowdry' on dry hair? I don't think I could do it. my hair dry and any kind of comb equals a big headache.

:ohwell: I don't think I can get 8. I'd have to do like 20. :( GROW HAIR GROW!!

To wear a fro; here's what i do:

1. on dry hair
2. mist (lightly) with my spritz mix (vo5 condish, water, and kemi oil) combing out with a medium sized comb. (the mist helps to keep the comb from ripping thru your hair)
3. apply Qhemet heavy cream (a litlle goes a long way and i section my hair into about 20 sections) mainly b/c it is sooo thick
4. do 2 starnd twist and then secure them like you would do bantu knots
5. I MAY sit under a heat cap for about 2 mins
6. do some house work or run some errands... or sleep in them overnight
7. when i am ready to go; undo knots andpick out with a big afro pick.

Voila.... BAA!!!! :)

I wash and detangle my hair THOROUGHLY before putting my hair into several plaits with grease or a moisturizer. Very detangled hair is key to getting a pretty good stretched out fro. Once my hair has dried COMPLETELY, I unravel the plaits and GENTLY pick out my hair with an afro pick or wide tooth comb. NO blowdryer. I don't wear this style often because it's such as hassle with all the combing out manipulation and the fact that my hair shrinks like crazy!

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks ladies! I didn't think it entailed that many steps. :ohwell: I'm gonna take these ponys down when I get home and try again. If it doesnt work I'm just gonna go get it cornrowed and put my wig back on.

Bmoreflyygirl.....My way is pretty simple ...all i do is cornrow my washed hair...i usually put about 5-6 cornrows in and let it dry overnight. ( now i DC, shampoo and condition or i may just cowash...but the idea is to get my hair really conditioned and moistured during the washing steps, only because as soon as i rinse out the conditioner...i do not add any product b4 i cornrow) alternatively you could mist a light leave in like rosewater.
I also noticed that the longer the cornrows stay in, the more stretched my hair.
When i take out the CR(cornrows), i just comb it out..my hair is so fine....that i do not have a problem combing out dry as long as its been stretched out with the CR.....try this and let me know how it works....
I have pics of my afro also in my fotki using this method if u wanna see it

I wear a fro everyday, and I don't do anything to stretch it out. I just wash it and style it into a round shape as it dries. I only blow dry it when I am going to braid it. My hair is cut so that it will dry in a round shape.
