Natural Heads: My Homemade Leave-In Spray, Whats Yours?

I'm going to make my leave-in spritz today with:

glycerin
aloe vera (gel for now)
orange oil
and seal with coconut or castor oil

I ordered some rosewater, jojoba oil, and 100% aloe vera juice for my next batch.

I read somewhere that adding water to conditioners and stuff isn't good because it can create a great breeding ground for bacteria and mold:nono:...Has anyone experienced this with their mixes? Or do you use your mix too quickly for it become contaminated?

Hi Vonnieluvs08: Wow, I havent heard of this but my hair soaks up my leave-ins within a day or two :yep:. Sometimes my batch goes bad the second day (depends on how I mix my ingredientd), and thats when I toss it.

i just started a concoction of water, Castor oil and 10 drops of peppermint oil. We will see how long this will last.

Daily, I simply spray my hair with a glycerine and water mix. When I shampoo and on my CW days I use a coconut oil and EVOO mix to kind of seal in the moisture, and then from there my daily spray listed above.

I think I read it on CurlyNikki's page or Newly Natural. Someone was talking about adding water to make the conditioner stretch especially if its a really thick one and how when you add water you disrupt the balance of the conditioner and perservatives and since we keep our conditioners in the bathroom the heat and moisture makes a playground for bacteria and mold. The advice was to only make as much as you need for one session.

My leave-in conditioner spray is this:

water
honey
downy fabric softener
apple cider vinegar
corn oil/ soybean oil

works great

I just mixed a concoction last night of Rosewater, gylcerin, and avocado/aloe vera oil. I baggied and went to bed.

This morning my hair was moist and applied Organix Shea Butter serum and walked out the door.

 Thank you for responding Vonnieluvs08 & Malibu4590: Very informative and I'm glad all you lovely ladies are lending your knowledge to this thread

Very interesting I didnt know oat and wheat protein also comes in liquid form :spinning:

La Colocha your a natural who uses oils in your leave-in, do you mind telling me your hair type (since your formula works so well)? I'm really trying to test different natural oils to see how my 4b hair responds.

So far the Oils I've Tried

Virgin Olive Oil
Virgin Unrefined Coconut Oil
Avocado Oil (Mixed with Vitamin E)
Jojoba Oil

I would like to try soybean oil, I'm really focused on oils that can absorb (penetrate the hair), but will linger a little like avocado. Its lite enough for my hair (I know its a heavier oil) but it stays on my hair and doesnt absorb fully or coats my hair making it heavy.

Also I remember a LHCF thread about downy softner, I never really hold on to the idea of testing this out on my hair since I'm natural 4b. I didnt think my hair would embrace the ingredients in the Softner: my hair loves water and natural products

water (filtered when I remember)
AO HSR
jojoba oil

I'm planning to add aloe vera gel but I keep forgetting to get it out of the fridge.

I;ve also been using Nature's Gate Jojoba Conditioner straight as a leave in s well.

I think i would try any cone free condish I find on sale as a leave in though

Hi coco im so sorry im just now seeing this im a 4a coily. You have a good list of oils to start out with. Play with the amounts of oil you use also. With the water in your leave in you won't need alot. Your hair will let you know when she's happy:yep:. And also my leave in is going to change since i have made the decision to use all natural products again. There is nothing wrong with the spray this is just my personal choice. I will post here again when i get it together.

Eta: the only thing that is going to change in the leave in is that i added hawaiian silky. I have to look for something to replace it.

Hey Ladies

I read in a lhcf post that Chamomile tea can be use as a leave-in, like a moisturizer. I wouldnt mind trying that

I'm trying new things every week or 3 weeks like: oils, natural moisturizers, and humeceants.

Every month I eye a natural or close to natural conditioner since I havent found an amazing one yet

I'm currently using Natures Gate Aloe Conditioner: It made my hair so friggin soft! But careful too much made my hair strecthy, like with any conditioner that I over load my hair with or keep in on too long: I dc for 2 hrs :look:: which is silly b'cuz its a new product so I shouldnt have used so much or left it in too long.

Would I use this as a leave-in: probably not but as a quick fix (for dry hair), yes!

Everyone has So many ingenious ideas :bookworm:

Bump!

Well Hairveda recently discontinued her Hydramist and the little bit I had ran out. Sooo, for a week I just tried moisturizing my hair with Green Tea Butter, Whipped cream and cocasta oil...my hair felt greasy but dry...anywho at my wits ends I just looked in my cabinet to see if I could combine some stuff for a mist leave in. I mixed NTM leave in, a few drops of jojoba oil, some vatika frosting and water and sprayed it on my hair. Overall not bad, soft and felt pretty moisturized. I have glycerin, aloe vera juice, coconut oil and rosewater on the way in the mail and I'll be playing around with those once they get here. I'm a relaxed head though.

blaqphoenix Thanks for your input: My first post i said rosewater (for me) is just WONDERFUL!

I use it was a toner, the last step of washing face, rosewater truly even my skin tone and makes my skin it glow!

Back to using rosewater as a leave-in, I know you said your relaxed but for my 4a\b hair it made my hair very soft with nothing else in my hair: just a couple of spritz of rosewater. The smell I really enjoy also.

Aloe juice made my hair brown! I use to make leave-ins with it, but I'll switch it to my food regimen instead

Glycerin is okay, it does gives my hair ringlets and softness, but it makes my hair dry (after effects) no matter the how much humidity is in the air.

 LOL ok I comment on all the products your getting, just wanted to add my results, though im a 4b natural: I hope you enjoy all your new products once they arrive!

i mix water with leave in. right now i have water, carols daughter black vanilla leave in and oyin juices and berries. i only use it at night on dry hair before i moisturize. i love it.

My homemade leave in is water, aloe vera juice, infusium 23 (brown and white bottle), cheapie conditioner, oil. I eyeball my measurements in order from greatest to least.

My homemade moisturiser is a mix of:
glycerin, spring water, nunaat intensive with cupuaçu butter, le kair cholesterol ultraplus, oils (olive, sunflowers, castor).

I use filtered water, Vo5 conditioner, castor oil, peppermint oil, rosewater, and rosemary oil mixed together in a spray bottle.

Im relaxed but Im thinking about making my own moisturizer spray. I will be putting aloe vera juice and rose water as a mix maybe castor oil.

I use this on my hair underneath my weave as I try to transition:

euqals parts African Royale Braid Spray, Lacio Lacio, Infusium 23, and Curls Quenched Moisturizer. So far this is working and keeping my hair soft. I'm not sure what I'll use after I fully transition.

I'm with you on the castor oil, adding it to my spray may be what my "summer hair" may need. I've been using castor oil after I spritz my hair with water, conditioner, then a dime size amount of castor oil.

I've been using clear castor oil heritage brand for a good three weeks now and my hair has retain softness and I have foreline growth (which I really needed)! Yay for castor oil :yay:
My hair likes this leave-in a lot! My hair stay soft and moist for about 4-5 hrs

New Leave-In Pehaps?

4 Oz.Distilled Water or Filtered Water
5-5 Drops Rosemary Esssenial Oil
Dab of Alba Conditioner Mango scented
1 ts Castor Oil (Just added)*

my spritz consist of:
distilled water
glycerin
Infusium 23
S curl or Sta Sa Fro
castor oil
and a few drops of rosemary EO

This is the formula for when I'm in braids and it keeps my hair in great shape.

When I start to wear it out I plan to substitute some of the ingredients with things like Aloe vera and coconut oil.

I just recently started taking good care of my hair and I credit this forum. I made a leave in spray with a couple of aloe vera leaves, spring water and a little honey. I put it all in the vitamix, strained it through a cheesecloth and I spritz my hair when it feels dry.

Ditto on the bolded... 'cause of this forum, I too have really stepped up my game.

Because it is getting hot (temps here hit 104 already), and because my hair just can't tolerate a lot of oil in the summer, I mix the following in a 4oz spray bottle to use two or more times daily:

1/2 oz Cowboy Magic Rosewater conditioner
10 drops of EVOO
10 drops of pure Coconut Oil
1/2 oz of Pure Aloe Gel/Juice
Top off with pure water
