Has anyone seen this video? I am stunned ya'll. Taren Guy visits the Natural Hair salon cosmetologist Anthony Dickey to learn and show viewers how to avoid heat damage on natural hair. Not only did he blow-dry and flat-iron-curled a 4c natural girl completely wet-to-dry, but he also did it WITHOUT detangling OR sectioning. Took less then 15 min and he blew through the hair like silk! Came out looking like a sleek old school press-n-curl!

I always heard it was "bad" to blow dry on soaking wet hair although I've always done it. Nice to know that isn't always true.

I really liked the pinned up style at the end of the 2nd video. I'm going to try that next time I straighten.

But her hair is so short that it should blow dry fast. Am I missing something? Regardless, I think he did an excellent job and I like the idea of pin curl up do (I would love to see if it works on longer hair) though. I think I'll head by there in a month or two and see what he can do. Maybe I'll post pics...

Interesting! A stylist once told me the same thing: to add conditioner to my hair before going to her salon. She didn't say to do it overnight but she did tell me to add it prior to my appointments when I got my hair straightened.

I can't listen to the audio right now but they clearly sped up the video and skipped some blow drying and ironing time. It took longer than 8:42 believe me. I'm sure it took 30 mins or so.

Also he used a good model. She didn't flinch at all. You know taking that comb attachment through your hair is no fun at all. I liked how he had the other hand hold the hair taut and guide the attachment.

ETA: Why are you surprised that he could blow dry her from wet to dry hair? That's a pretty basic technique for any type of hair - the general idea. Many people on here get blow-outs for hair cuts, or for styling, or whatever (or do it themselves). I did in the past too.

I'm sure he towel dried her hair at least but yes I see that she went from the shampoo bowl to his chair.

I don't see 4C hair. She has some pretty defined ringlets, similar to my hair.

ETA2: Does Taren's hair still look like that? I know y'all posted threads of some color damaged hair or something but I don't keep up.

He said in the video that it took 12 minutes to blow dry.

I'm a stan. I have enjoyed every Dickey video I have ever seen. He drops knowledge in each one.

Hi Ms. Holla:wave:

To add it and leave it in? Or to DC and R/O before coming in?

I specifically was referring to the blow drying time. Which he stated was 12 minutes in total. Not the total blow out and curling.

I've always blow-dried my own hair and was always told to do it on DAMP to dry. Never wet. There are many articles all over the internet including on natural ones stating that it's damaging and forms "bubbles". That's the reason I was stunned.

:hiya2: I would always add it and leave it in. Show up to the salon with it in my hair like the girl in the video. The stylist was fine with that and honestly, I never thought about rinsing it out before going to the salon. Now that he said it too, I'll be sure to do that every time I visit any salon for a wash/flat iron. :yep:

I always heard the same thing. That you should not blow dry on soaking wet hair to cut down on the amount of direct heat used on your strands. Folsk would say to airdry or sit under a dryer for a few minutes (indirect heat) and then blow dry (direct heat). I also heard that you should blow dry until the hair is about 90% dry. I wonder if he did that with her too or if he blew it out until it was 100% dry.

ETA: Plus folks would say combing and manipulating the hair when it is soaking wet is bad bc then it is in its most fragile state. Yet he is applying direct heat and combing the hair while it is dripping wet so that refutes what those other people are saying too.

Yeah you need to listen to the audio because he does a lot of explaining. He said 12 minutes and he didn't towel dry. He said something about the hair needing to be soaked.

I go to his salon monthly. He is a master at curly and kinky hair. I trust all that he says and does.

Im in awe of his knowledge and especially the casual easy way he presents it. Im not awestruck enough to sit in his chair but i do wonder if he does lectures or workshops...id love an in depth chat with this man!

I've never heard about bubbles in hair and have always heard you should blow out hair from wet to dry. Blowing out dry hair (like Dominican rollersets and blowing out the roots) is how you get heat damage. It's harder to blow out hair that is already dry. Reniece had a video on this too - https://youtu.be/BKtjw6S-0HA?t=1m23s

Last night I followed his method to straighten my hair, and I couldn't be happier!!!!!! The fastest I've ever been able to blowdry my hair was in 40 mins, and that was with a lot of comb detangling before. I cowashed my hair, lightly finger detangled like he did in the video, and was able to blowout my hair in 20 mins with a broken comb attachment and my fingers!!!! I was sure that I wouldn't be able to get a rattail comb through my hair, but I did with no problem!!! The process from beginning to end took about 2.5 hours, and that was with some minor breaks!! Sweet almond oil was the only thing I left in my hair!

Yep! I finally got my appointment with her! Been waiting 2 months!

I went to his salon in Dec and had a great experience. I met with Monique who is another top stylist there (and cheaper than Dickey) and she did I great job. They took my soaking wet hair and added tons of conditioner (leave-in). They said as long as you hair is full of moisture, blowdry and flat iron should not be a problem. They cut my hair and then wet it again and everything bounced back.

I want to keep going but I had a very bad alopecia flare up soon after (not related to going to their salon of course) so I dont really want people in my hair right now.

yoshi is my fav there...they do some hair in that salon...and are very gentle in detangling--they are the only salon that finger detangles your hair so gentle and soft...winner.

I agree.

I'm not sure how long people expect a stylist to take to blow out their hair?

I don't remember exactly for myself but I'm sure it was in the same time frame as him, or 15-20 minutes but that's pushing it. I think that I would've noticed it the blow dry and that darn comb attachment was in my head for 30 mins or more lol.

I meant ~30 minutes for the entire process - blow drying and flat ironing, especially if he was flat ironing in small sections. I do know that I've gone from shampoo bowl to a blow dry with out much more than a little towel drying. I hate dripping wet hair on myself.

I like how her hair has a lot of body and looks healthy.

I can't comment on the flat ironing length/time much, haven't done that since I was natural.

He said in the video that it took 12 minutes to blow dry.

Okay the OP sounded like you meant the total time for everything.

Ahh yes the 'bubbles'. People do talk about that and they are wary of the flat irons that take you from wet to dry hair.

Very impressed. Does anyone actually go here? Do you go to him or another stylist?

Do they do locs as well?

I actually go to A. Dickey, have for the past 8 -9 years now I want to say (before he opened Hair Rules Salon). I've never experienced ANY heat damage from him or his assistants straightening my natural hair. My co-worker sees another stylist at the salon and also hasn't experienced any damage. They do use a leave-in and a blow-out product that I'm sure helps protect the hair too.

I've never seen any loc styling on my visits.

Wow! She does wonders. Amazing!

This video is interesting. I never put alot of moisturizer in my hair before blow drying so it will not be weighed down. But I may have to try his technique

They have an Express Blow Out that takes about an hour at Hair Rules. I used them, once, and had an okay experience.

The salon I used on Wednesday did my blow out and flat iron in under an hour as well, including shampoo and condition (combed through conditioner for a couple of minutes but no dryer time).
