Natural 4a/b ladies...can u put your hair in a bun

I'm thinking I'll take a break from the braids come Feb-MAr and I want to try this ponytail method...so I can take this Vaseline challenge. And be able to wash and comb my hair 1x/week. Instead of what I do now...don't ask

Keep in mind my hair is like Jill Scott/Macy Gray/Old Michael Jackson texture. I have more than enough to put into a bun but how do I get the crown and sides down and not poofy..especially after it dries? TIA

When my hair is wet I apply a leave-in (usually Elucence or Lafier Honey Almond) and detangle my hair. Then I apply Worlds of Curls Activator Gel (the one in the tub) and a little Smooth n Shine Gellation. Then I flatten the edges and the top with detangler brush. I use the Amore Marble Anti-Static Styler Brush from Sally's. Then I tie it down with a scarf until I'm finished dressing. By the time I leave the house it's pretty flat.

I wet my hair every day (conditioner wash or distilled water spritzing), so it never really dries 100%. If it did I'm sure it would puff up...

Yes. I usually put it in a ponypuff while it is damp. Or what I will sometimes do is plait it in 8 to 10 plaits and when they are dry (and stretched out) I can pull my hair back into a ponypuff.

I had my hair in a bun today. Since I don't like to comb or brush my hair to style it, to keep the crown and sides down, sometimes I use my fingers and the palm of my hands to smooth a little bit of hairdress on my hair, then I tie a silk/satin around the crown and sides. When I take off the scarf later, my hair usually stays down. Other times, I just smooth my hair with a bit of hairdress and put 2 slim headbands on. The headbands keep my hair down.
Sometimes, I actually like wearing a poofy bun. I looks less severe and more youthful than a tight sleek bun.

Thanks for all the replies ladies

One more question. Besides an afro puff ponytail, do you ladies know of any other type that would blend well or semi-well with our hair type without me having to use heat on my hair? Thanks again

I wear a braided, vaselined bun. I "inject" a Surge + Ion straightening conditioner mix onto my scalp at various points with an applicator. The Surge is sticky enough to "paste" the bun flat.

Faith, I am not sure I understand your question.

I think she's saying that once the bun dries into its flat wavy state, does anyone know of any hair that blends well with that texture (i.e. hair that's not blown out first and then put into a bun).

Faith, usually I use the hair on a track that looks wavy/afro textured. It basically looks like the kinky twist hair but it's not loose for braiding. This works well with my wet bun. Normally I acheive this by:
1. conditioner washing, rinsing, apply more conditioner as a leave in
2. pulling my hair back into a tight pony tail (using a boar's bristle brush on the edges with Let's Jam and some oil)
3. wrapping my ponytail in it's own bun
4. using a plastic baggie (or some other protectant)
5. wrapping the track around my hair and securing with bobby pins
6. tying the entire contraption down with a silk scarf overnight

Another thing you could try is taking the afropuff phonypony and making braids/plaits with it then taking hair pins and pinning the braids/plaits down into a bun style that can be attached to your own bun.

Try following hairlove's weekly ritual with the conditioner washes and then taking a scarf and "setting" your hair in preparation for doing the bun challenge.

If you have problems with keeping a scarf on your head (like I do when I'm sleeping), get one of those conditioner scarfs by Christina (Magic Satin scarf) and wrapping it tight around your head (these scarf stretch and are really flexible) and then wrapping that with a regular scarf or use a satin bonnet. As hard as I sleep, I typically keep at least one of those scarves on throughout the night.

Or make a bun with a donut or Hairdini and kinky bulk hair (see don'tspeakdefeat's album). I keep saying I'm going to do this...

When I do buns on my girls I wash the hair first, then section off their hair into 5 ponytails held down with those elastic holders w/balls on them after applying leave-in and oil, dry under a bonnet/ or air dry. When dry I do 1 bun (small size) on each side of the front half of their heads and one (large size) on the back half using the Whirlastyler (sizes SML).

Sometimes I use a gel and scarf to smooth down the hairs around the edges when needed. I don't fight the natural look of the rest of the hair.

Sometimes I dry their hair sectioned the way the buns are going to be using the ponytail method.

My girls are 4a/b, 95% natural. Bangs relaxed only worn in braid out style most of the time lately.

Thanks everyone for all your input.

I really appreciate it. Thanks miss_brown for explaining...that's exactly what I meant

I've been meaning to try a bun myself. That donut thingy seems promising. Diamondlady told me about hers at our Dallas meet.

For my sides though, I'd style them into tendrils using Salon Selectives Control(D) Substance. I use this same product to define (shape, defrizz, hold) my tendrils when I wear a curly puff. It rinses out well too.

ITA with jessy's thoughts on the bun. i used to section my hair into two or four buns at night as a protective style. i would slick it back with a few handfuls of water, some olive oil and maybe a bobby pen or two if they wouldn't stay.

it wasn't too comfortable to sleep on, so i eventually learned how to slip those ends under the bun to hold it together. my hair would tend to slip out from under cause i sleep real wild (even with a satin bonnet on) so i quit using this protive style and opted for two french braids. i think i need a little more length (about a quarter of the way down my back) to do one big, really nice bun though. we'll see as my coils grow.
