Any naturals who wear their hair up in ponytail/puffs/buns alot and don't experience breakage? Please share how this is achieved...

I have been wearing puffs and buns for the past few months.I stop twisting my hair due to tangles when removing and washing. For me, I co wash almost daily. So, I am able to release shed hair and check to see if there is breakage. After I co wash, I use a knee high to pull my hair back but not tight at all. I use a small brush and a dallop of gel to slick back my edges. I do the same with buns. I alternate to break up the cycle of puffs. I do notice that buns did not work for me long term. I did not experience much retention. My hair is retaining well and almost no breakage due to low, low manipulation, even in washing and putting it back. I hope this helps.

OP, I think you have to find out what works best for your hair and stick with it. For me, puffs and my hair out does great for me but it may not work for you. Listen to your hair and do what it likes to do. You will see the rewards!

How do you use a knee high to pull your hair back. Im newly natural, and would like to try this technique.

I'd like to know about the knee high too!:yep: Do you just cut the end off and pull your hair thru? I've been using a braid sock and it's working well but it looks just like a knee high with the end cut off.☺

Use seamless/ouchless headbands, or nylon stockings to hold your puff. Be careful not to snag your nape hair if you use something that has to be tied in the back of your head (like a scarf).

I always frown and bend my head to see if I can feel any tension once I put my hair up. If there's tension, that means it's too tight.

When I bun, I try to only use pins instead of using a ponytail holder. This helps prevent breakage. I also use jumbo bobby pins instead of the small ones - less snagging. If I do use a ponytail holder, I soak it in oil before I put it in my hair.

I haven't been bunning that long but so far, so good.

I co-wash/DC with heat once a week. Once I've detangled and rinsed, I use Giovanni Nutrafix as a leave in and use it throughout my wet hair, smoothing my hair back as I work it in. I add more to the ends then SLATHER and I mean SLATHER my ends with Blue Magic Coconut Grease. I think this has been key in minimal breakage. My no-metal elastic is also SLATHERED in grease, too. I then use my boar-bristle brush to smooth the top/front/sides/back of my hair then put it in a bun. I then use a little EcoStyler Olive Oil Gel on the top/front and cover with a scarf.

At night, I take off my phony pony/bun, divide my hair in two sections and apply Giovanni Nutrafix to each section before sealing with Blue Magic Coconut Grease and twisting each section. I sleep with a satin cap and in the morning I just remove the cap, untwist my hair, wet my hands and wet the brush to smooth my hair and re-activate the gel, gather it into a bun, seal the ends with more grease, make sure the elastic is good and greasy, put it in bun, attach my fake bun/puff, then cover with a scarf.

Easy peasy!

Hi!
I will try to explain the best way I can :yep:

When dry my hair from the shower, I let it lay where it it falls. I take a knee high or cut off an old pair of black stockings. ( 10- 12 inches)
- place it around my neck where the ends of the knee high will meet in front of you and it should lay across your shoulders in a downward angle.

- Take each end of the knee hi and cross one over the other so that it is connected it forms like an enclosure( or circle). * as if you are going to tie a bow or shoelace*

_ With the drawn circle( enclosure) place it at the start of your hairline and pull. As you pull, your hair will slick back into a puff. I like to pull and then raise the back part up to make more of a pony tail.
- Once you pulled it back to the desired spot, you will tie it again and tuck the ends in the back. Also, once I get there, I pull up so that it is loose around me head but sturdy enough to keep the hair in place. Tightness gives me a headache!

Voila! you can make a large or small puff or pony tail. You can create a bun with the hair left out. I like to take a brush with some Ecostyler gel and brush it down. You can also, use gel and tie your hairline down with a scarf if you don't like to use brushes.

I hope my instructions are helpful. It is really easy.

Recap:
Take the knee hi, put it around your shoulder, tie it. Pull it taught starting at your hairline and pull back to the desire spot.
