Is there anything I can do to avoid those little single strand knots? They are driving me crazy! I gave myself a trim last month so now i have no splits but im still seeing these things. Anyone wear their hair in afropuffs and dont get those tiny little singe strand knots....the kind only a scissor can get rid of? A little info....I've been really good about keeping my hair more moisturized and not leaving it loose when I sleep or leaving a style in too long. Ive increased my deep conditioning. Is it possible that I just have to continue growing out my color treated ends? Im so distraught

Or am I just being unrealistic? Is this what my hair is gonna do no matter what? I dont want to have to keep trimming so often.

My ends can't even stay right for longer than a month

I feel guilty about even posting this. My hair has come such a long way but it seems like there is always something keeping me from achieving the healthiness that I want

Thank you for asking this question, I get those knots too. Since I got a trim it's gotten better, right now I'm trying not to let the knots get to me. I just leave them be until the next time I plan to detangle with conditioner. At night I braid my hair to avoid tangles too, but I wonder what else there is that you can do?

Hi NubianAngel,

I wear my hair in braids (not extensions) all the time, so I don't really have that problem now. But, my hair used to knot up alot before. My solution to that was a self-trim, but I'm not advising you to do what I did. I kind of got scissor happy and I started cutting off all my rough ends. However, after my trim. I did not get anymore single tangles. But, hmmn you said you gave yourself a trim.
You sound so distraught, that I just wanted to tell you to think positive...at least you have hair to knot up.

Ok, maybe that didn't really help you.
How often do you detangle?

I didn't read the other thread so forgive me if I'm being redundant, but I get those knots too and I think that when you're sure that you've trimmed, it's just shed hair. The problem is that sometimes all of the shed hair gets trapped in tightly coiled hair more so than in straight. So I would suggest giving yourself a thorough brush out with for example a denman every once in awhile to remove all shed hair. Wet hair, put on conditioner, section, and start gently detangling and brushing. HTH.

i think when you wear natural hair OUT and manipulate or comb it often you will get knots. the pattern of the hair causes this. try wearing protective styles where you leave the hair in one style for a week or two or more. the longer you leave it in the protective style the less chance there is for knotting or breakage.

example of protective styles:
cornrows
bantu knots
braids
or any combination of above
extension styles

i used to get knots as well as excessive breakage when i was wetting and combing daily. imagine the trauma to your hair!!! so give your hair a break and it will reward you...

This post is right on the money!

Thanks for the replies. It's funny, when I trimmed the last time I was paranoid and didn't wear my hair out for this reason

I guess i'm off to get started on my own personal "no knot/put those darn scissors down challenge"

Great thread. But I've been getting knots at the line of demarcation(I'm transitioning).Too many tangles too- big ones.

I agree with Napturalglory. Excellent advices. Twists are good protective styles also.

Some hair do fine with being out all the time in puffs and afros while other hair don't do so well. Maybe you need to give your hair a periodic break from out styles and do protectives styles 50/50. By the way, I consider twistouts and braidouts protective styles, as long as you leave the twists or braids in for at least 2 days before undoing. It makes the curl pattern stronger and helps it last longer before the next shampoo.

You mentioned that your hair is colored. It is possible that the dye job created excessive dryness, so you need to be extra careful with your hair.
