Ladies - I figured it is about time that I post pics of my hair, so as to monitor my progress.

I took one of my braids down and tried to flat-iron it with my Sedu. Initially, I had the temperature set at 250. Well, that did not work. Then I set it at 380. That did not work. Well, that is as far as I went, and could you believe with all the newgrowth, it did absolutely NOTHING to straighten my roots. :ohwell:

Mind you, I have not had a relaxer since May 09. Not trying to do any extreme stretches, but just to see how my hair would hold up without a relaxer. I have several several inches of new growth, I went over the section with a few swipes and NADA. Even when I tried to blow dry it out (a few days ago), the shrinkage is awful!! My hair is super thick!

My roots up to the demarcation mark is very strong, however, I can not get it to straighten.

Any suggestions? :ohwell:

I think I have experienced something similar. When I try to use my flatiron, my hair never straightens all the way. Still has a kink to it, sometimes downright crunchy.
For me, I have learned that I can only get salon perfect results on freshly washed hair with little to no product. A little heat protectant or leave in that's it. I blow dry in four sections, and then flat iron small sections at a time. My hair gets straighter than a relaxer ever did. This lasts can last up to a week depending on the weather.
The only was I was ever able to get my hair straight straight without blowdrying first was when I fist went natural and used Sunsilk leave in cream in the pink bottle. my hair would be nappy as ever, but just rubbing a bit of that on each section and going over with the iron would produce perfect results too.

ETA: I have a WeeChi that allows me to get up to the root and do very small sections at a time which makes a HUGE difference.

I'm about a year post and my sedu still works maaaarvously.

What products do you use to prep and do you use and particular method to straighten?

I swear by Sabino Moisture Block, but there are other less expensive heat protectants that are also very nice. The Sabino just keeps my hair from reverting (I'm currently in a weave, and I flat iron the crown and edges of my hair to blend.)

As far as method - I used a small tooth comb on small sections of detangled prepped hair, and "chase" it with the flat iron. So instead of holding the section with my fingers, I use the comb. That gets out every kink, and keeps the hair taut while I flat iron. :yep:

Yep, this is what I was going to suggest.

Thank you ladies. I will just try again at a later date. I just came in from the gym and wanted to share that while I was running on the treadmill, and worked up a sweat, I got a whiff of my hair. Mind you, it's clean, but after that small section I tried to flatiron, I could smell it. Which brings me to the reason why I never flatironed that often. I hate the smell of burnt irons.....

But I need to get some type of protectant. Maybe that'll do.....I'll shop around tomorrow.

You can try using the chase method (taking a comb or brush and going over the section as you flat iron) or you can invest in a Maxiglide (I personally think this choice is best)
