My hair keeps locking...help!

Baby Chick Gate 2011
It seems that when my hair (natural) reaches a certain length, it starts to get really tangled and it starts to form locs in places. The locking happens in the middle or toward the ends.

My reggie is simple. I shampoo once a week (or more as needed). I wet my hair almost every day and do co washes at least three times a week. I do no mani except finger combing as I co wash. I will use a wide toothed comb or pick to do a light detangle about bimonthly. Every four months or so i do a master detangle (I'm due for one) where I do a wash, DC, comb through and trim. I then twist my hair.

Anyway, i need to do a detangle. I have a few places that have locs. Some of my curl groups are locked near the ends.

Any advice would be appreciated. :help:

I would second the detangle recommendation. My hair matts when I don't detangle. I think using more moisture and detangling often are your best bet

I would recommend using lots of coconut oil and even a water and glycerin spritz to detangle! :)

Because You're Worth It ;) Pretty please vote for me here: http://blackgirllonghair.com/2012/12/vote-for-the-2012-bglh-style-icon-of-the-year/ - for BGLH Icon of the Year - Jennifer :)

I also couldn't finger detangle so I use a wide tooth comb weekly and a smaller toothed seamless comb monthly.

Also, make sure the products you are leaving in get to every strand of your hair. Strands of my hair without product end up matted when it dries.

Change the bolded.
Detangle more often. Start with detangling frequently then gradually increase your time between through detangles to find your baseline number of days that you can go without detangling that will eliminate the locking.

I've found that I can't even use a wide toothed or shower comb for detangling. There are small areas of matted hair near the roots that the comb just doesn't get through.

I made a YT vid the other day after taking out my microbraids. I had to comb out each moisturized section with a regular comb and then braid (not twist) it right away so that I wouldn't experience matting and tangling.

I wish I could stick to a wide-toothed comb like I used when I was relaxed. It minimized shedding when my hair was straight. But it's all good.

Thank you all for the feedback. I realize now that I've been treating my hair like its still relaxed. I've made some adjustments obviously but i still need to make some more changes.
