TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I am at my wits end. I went to get my braids done at a salon and the girl doing my hair was like, what do u have in your hair? I explained the perm didn't take in my hair and i told her how i even left it on for 25 min, it still didn't take....blah blah blah... My hair was a bit damp bc I washed it earlier. As she blew it out, she was having trouble getting the comb attachment thru! I felt sorry for her and said it was ok because even I have problems with straitening, curling, or trying to do anything to my hair. I know my hair is hard to handle, but this girl had so much trouble gripping my hair to braid it. She was no slouch at doing others hair, and doing it nice. My hair has a crazy texture now and I'm not sure that I can handle it natural in its current state. If a pro can barely handle it in its wicked texlaxed state, how am I, a hair novice gonna fare? I'm starting to re-think going natural right now. Right now I'm in cornrows, praying this style lasts for at least a month and a half. After that, I don't know what to do. She was asking the advice of the other stylists in the salon, who was asking me if I was mixed or something.... OMG! The other stylist said my hair looked strait, but the other girl doing my hair said my texture is crazy. When she saw it for herself, she was also like  Guys, I'm so nervous right now, because I know she is right. My texture is crazy. I don't want to have to pay 60$ all the time to have it looking right. I'm starting to think I should hold off transitioning until I get this texture thing figured out. Can u guys give me any ideas what to do? I just want to be able to do this without the having to spend 60$ every 2 months. :( My hair right now is fighting EVERYTHING I try to do to it. My gel and water style is not working anymore. This is starting to be more trouble than it's worth!

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that your texture is crazy... Is it texturized? Do you have any new growth?

I transitioned for 14 months and had minimal "trouble". My biggest problem was tangles in the beginning. I had a minimal amount of trouble because I realized early on that natural hair is not like relaxed hair & you cannot try to make it behave as relaxed hair. The easiest style for transitioners are braidouts, twists/twistouts, rollersets, buns & ponytails. There are many threads that we naturals & transitioners have created & shared on that can help you through.
Maybe you need to stop trying to straighten & curl your hair and do something simple. And keep the products to a minimum. JMHO

I have the same problem! My hair isn't straight, natural, or texturized. It's a strange and unpleasant mix of the three. It's easier to deal with if you're using heat, that hides it. But I've been staying away from heat for months.

I don't really have a helpful answer for you; I'm not even sure what to do myself. I can see where this would make growing natural hair out difficult, but I think you can do it. I've been keeping my styles really simple. Bun variations. Pulling the hair back really calms it down once I take it down again. Elasta QP mango butter helps me straighten it when I'm brushing it out. Also Elasta QP Recovery.

If you experiment with it, I really think you can find a way to make it manageable. Otherwise, maybe find someone you really, really trust to fix the texture. If it doesn't work, you may have to do a chop. But at least you'd be closer to natural. ;)

The problem w. my hair is that it is texlaxed....mixed w/ a texturizer and relaxer. I have a crazy wave pattern in the front, but the sides are sort of strait. It only looks good wet, but after it dries, the wicked texture begins to overtake it. It swells and weirdly almost looks afrolike. I just can't transition to natural with all this going on. If it was just relaxed, I think it would be easier to transition. I am not able to style it anymore. My hair has become a burden more than a blessing this past month. I just don't know if I can transition with my hair in this state.I'm thinking about relaxing it and then going on to transition. It's my fault for trying to fix my texturized hair by relaxing it. Why didn't I just leave it alone? :wallbash:

I just think I need encouragement. I'm so discouraged right now and I'm not thinking clearly. I need all the tips I can get. I'm just afraid of this new texture I have. I thought it was gonna be easier than this to transition. :p Can you guys keep sending me tips? I'm not able to put my hair in a bun. It's far too short, even tho mtg is making my hair grow. I think mtg is to blame for this change in texture. I'm going to try to find out which product can help enhance the waves in a good way. Maybe it's my product choices that I'm lacking in. The mango butter is a keeper, but I need something with it to not make it look so dry. Any tips? :ohwell:

May I ask what kind of relaxer/texturizer did you use?

Hi Natrlchallenge. I was 100 percent natural off and on for the past 3 or so years. I recently 'texlaxed' my little twa and it just wouldn't get as straight as I wanted. I think that it's due to length. The longer my hair gets, the more the waves will lay down. I'm a kinky 4b around the sides and front hairline and a softer 4a at the crown and nape. First my goal was to lightly texturize. I did that with a Cream of Nature mild lye relaxer mixed with olive oil and conditioner. That worked at softening my hair and making it easier to comb. No real Worlds of Curls, if you know what I mean, but it was cool. I still wasnt' quite satisfied, so I repeated the process a few days later, only I left the mixture on till my hair looked smooth (aprx 10 minutes).I decided to take it a step further and apply a second 'corrective' texturizer...this time with a Dark and Lovely boxed no lye regular strenght relaxer. That was a few days ago. That definatly worked better, but my hair is still wavy. Lookes like a Wave Nouvou (sp?) when slicked back with gel. If I spike it out with my fingers just before the gel dries, it looks like an old fashioned 'freeze' from the mid nineties (showing my age) lol. ...

My hair is very thick and spongy in some areas. I know what you mean about resistant hair. Perhaps because my hair was 'virgin', it took more than one process to texturize/relax it. My personal challenge will be to not apply another relaxer to my hair for at least a month and a half. If it wanted to stay wavy, let it. Currently I'm wearing a little chinese bob wig that looks really cute until it grows long enough for me to attatch a phoney pony. My hair grows very fast.

As far as being natural, I'll do it again, as I always do, but I'll transition without the big chop and then go straight to locs. I decided to textlax this time because my natural hair took too much time for me to style and comb. It felt nice when it was moist, but it always dried crispy and wiry in spots. The only product that counteracted that was Sta-So-Fro but that was too sticky to the touch.

I think that I'm doing ok though. From what I've read, hair that's stick straight after applying a relaxer is most likely overprocessed. When I rinsed my hair and towel dried it, it looked just like a jherri curl lol. Like I said, as it grows out, it will probably hang straighter. I'm also not going to use much heat as I've done in previous years. My mom told me that relaxed hair has to be either wet set or pressed/ironed/blow dried to make it straight. On it's own, it lookes almost like a fluffy natural. I'm, cool with that. It's definatly taken away all of that bulkiness that I had. Much easier to comb. I still won't comb it dry, but I won't have the detangle blues lol.

As for your transition, I'd either wear a fall or half wig or slick it back for a pony tail. I'm not transitioning now, but I AM trying to see how long my relaxed/texturized hair can grow. I told myself that I'd stay natural for years and years, this past time, but I didn't want to grow a 100 percent natural head of afro hair only to put a chemical relaxer years down the line. That woul be like growing my hair for 10 years and cutting it down to 1 inch. Maybe I just have some wacky hair committment issues going on lol.

Good luck to you! : ))

Aquamarine, your hair is just like mine! If I gel and slick it, the wave nouveau effect! It was like that til my hair grew longer and my ng came out like a weed!I don't know what texture it is anymore and apparently no one else does either! The ladies at the salon was like  :lachen: i can laugh now because I feel a little better today. All my friends love my cornrows and so does my hubby. :p luv that man- he gave me extra $ to get my hair done. :D I think now since I'm 5 weeks post relaxer, the longest I've ever been w/o a relaxer....my hair is reverting back, but wilder now due to mtg. PHEW! It's gonna be some transition! :ohwell: Just keep encouraging me guys, bear with me. My hair just gave me a big shock, butI'm going to try like heck to keep on transitioning! :o
