My Hair is so Dry Shea Butter Can't Fix it...

Last week I clarified, dc'ed, moisturized and sealed & still had dry hair in the am. I can usually tell when I need to clarify because my hair doesn't act right; typically after clarifying my hair bounces back, but it's still in a rut. It's like my hair is so dry it sucks everything up instantaneously, but can't get enough.

I am in the same boat with you. I just had to do an aggressive trim because I noticed a lot of multi-splits. **Grrrr** I had to cut off some of my progress.

And it seemed like it happened suddenly. This cold weather is killing me.
Please be sure to PM me if you figure out a solution.

As of right now I'm raising the bar with silk amino acids and sealing sith shea butter but I agree, the shea is greasier in the winter.

wow your hair is high maintenance  lol. but yea the only thing i could think of is using oils but ur hair doesnt like that... sooo... im sorry i couldnt help you :nono:

shea butter is the best for me right now.
but what i do is put a leave in on wet hair followed by castor oil. then i pat it damp/dry with a towel or t-shirt, then i add my shea butter or heavy moisturizer.

for example. tonight im gonna co wash, apply leave in and jbco, wrap my hair in a towel for 15 minutes and then braid my hair for a braid out using blended beauty happy nappy styles.

I just want to co-sign on the amazing properties of Castor Oil. I got mine cheaply from Wal-Mart (the edible kind in the pharmacy section in a dark, short bottle.) Shea butter and then finalizing with Castor has been amazing as the weather gets cold....

Thanks for mentioning, I would have forgotten.

Also co-signing on either chelating or otherwise deeply clarifying so that your moisturizing methods work. They still should work....

I do hope you have gotten what you need here.

Does anyone know if castor oil is also a moisturizing oil? Forgive me if this has been covered endlessly...

Sincerely,
cj

Also, have you looked into mixing your shea butter with other butters?
I am using a mix of shea and organic cocoa butters, with some oils mixed in.
I want to add some murumuru and kukui butters in as well:yep:
I mist my hair with rosewater, and add my shea mix to the damp hair, and seal with one of my oils.
I have also been cowashing at night,so i don't have to go out in this killer weather with a damp head.:nono::nono:
Great thread!

I mix too...maybe that's why mine is still so moisturizing. My mix: shea and cocoa butters, EVOO, castor oil, vitamin E oil, jojoba oil, ad an essential oil for scent. My mix is soooo light...melts instantly. Does yours?

Is it possible that your porosity has been thrown off? I mean, while the weather plays a role in how hair behaves, a lot of what you have described sounds like you need some PC. That's what I would do.

I'm going to purchase some porosity control and see if that makes a difference; it's the only thing I haven't tried. I'm also gonna do a steam treatment soon. I'd love to straighten my hair to see if it fairs better, but with all the dryness I'm experiencing this is an awful time to break out the flat irons.

Thanks again for all the help ladies. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

^^ I was also thinking (in addition to PC) maybe seeing how your hair fairs with straight(er) styles in the winter.

Maybe a roller set (to stretch the hair some), then lightly ironing the roots and a silk wrap.

From here, you could even still experiment with twists, braids-outs, bantu knots etc by the second week to maximize the stretched style - while babying and lightly oiling your ends...

some folks have talked about how rollersetting transformed their hair (although I understand their issue prob/may not have been moisture). But maybe this could be an option?

Whatever you decide, I wish you the best!

How often have you been baggying? Maybe if you baggy for a bit that may hold in some of the moisture. Also mixing up penetrating oils may help as that's not necessarily a hot oil treatment per say.

Well, I wear hats throughout the winter season :yep: the way I stop my hair from breaking is that I place a silk hair bonnet over my hair first, then put on the hat. It stops any breakage from the constant rubbing. HTH

This was going to be my suggestion. I wear hats in the winter either all day if they are dress hats, or just for the outdoors if they're just the regular woolly hats. And underneath the hats, I wear a baggy. I still don't apply anything to my hair by way of moisturizer/leave-in during the winter, but I also don't let the elements get to my hair. I only take my regular woolly hats off when indoors and then when it's time to go outdoors, I put on my plastic cap and woolly hat first. I don't like to be cold, so my head, hands and feet get well protected in the cold season.

I don't know about it being a moisturizing oil but I do know that Msa used it to seal. She'd have damp hair with nothing but water and then apply Castor oil and swore it kept her hair soft and manageable.

You could try adding an humectant ( glycerine, honeyquat, silk amino acids or other light vegetable proteins) to your conditioners and moisturizers. It may help with the dryness.

Yesss!!!Extremely so, which was very surprising to me!
I thought the castor, red palm, and vitamin e oils would have made it weigh my hair down,so i was being very cautious with those oils.I also added a few drops of sweet orange, tea tree, and rosemary essential oils.
I was surprised at the outcome, and that's what gave me the green light to add even more butters:yep:

I have been combating dryness with overnight DCs and sealing my leaving(Lustasilk Cholesterol) with Crisco. I got made fun of on here, but that Crisco cut the tangles and has my hair silky soft.

I think my dryness issues are a result of my hair being overly porous; no matter what I applied to my tresses they couldn't hold in moisture. I tested my hypothesis by doing an acv rinse & I noticed a difference; the first day & a half after my wash my hair didn't feel thirsty at all.

I purchased porosity control & the tools necessary for performing a steam treatment; I'll make a post with my results after I try them.

Thanks again for ALL the suggestions!!!!!

i fixed my problem. i was going through the same thing. and my hair loves shea butter so it seemed my problem was unfixable. but i did it.

i did like i said in an earlier post. i added leave in, then an oil and then i devided my hair in six sections and braided my hair in six big braids using shea butter. i let my hair air dry overnight and then the next day i took each section down one by one and made individual twists using qhemet heavy cream. my hair is soooo soft and i did all this on saturday and sunday.
i moisturize the twists daily with my whipped shea butter mix which is:
shea butter
avocado butter
olive butter
evoo, jojoba oil, coconut oil and jbco.

Update: Clarifying & THEN deep conditioning with oils in my con worked wonders for me. My hair was just over-coated due to build up. Thanks fo the tip, ladies. I will be clarifying weekly. :D

COCONUT OIL! I tell ya, it makes my hair happy even when it is cold.:yep: I can solidify in your hair if you're out in the elements too long, but it melts when you're inside.:lachen: I don't use a whole lot now, but when my stretch gets longer, I will be!:lachen:

Just used the Roux PC on my girls' hair---their hair was just winter dry and shea butter/castor oil wasn't doing the trick like it normally does.

What a difference the PC made! I could tell the difference almost immediately--their hair just sucked up the conditoner. After DC'd their hair was like butter--easy to detangle also. PC will def be a part of our regimen. I don't know what took me so long to try it. Can't wait to use it on my own hair.

Thanks for this suggestion!

the hair won't feel as soft but if it's moisturized it shouldn't break. now, i spritz lightly with water and seal ends with castor oil and baggy. Baggy, baggy, baggy is the best thing to do for my hair.

My soft, happy hair is B A C K !!!!!! It may be too early to rave, but I just used the pc & did a mini steam trmt, applied my shea aloe & blow dried my hair on cool so I don't have to sleep with a wet head and it feels sooooooooooo soft !!!! I pray it lasts. :)
