Are you pulling your hair back in a bun while it is wet? That could be a big contribution. As you hair dries in the bun, it wants to retract but has nowhere to go because it is stretched out already to the limit. So it snaps.
I agree. If I bun when wet, I make certain that there is some slack. If I feel any tightness, I re-bun while it's drying. Also, be carful of what tools you use for bunning. No unprotected elastics. Use cut off knee high stocking tops and satin scrunchies. Don't comb or brush unnecessarily (I recommend searching the threads for suggestions on how to comb/brush).
Also, you didn't mention conditioning or your if your hair is dry. It's a good idea to deep condition as needed. If you're following a low manipulation routine, then deep condition at least once or twice a month.
You may be losing elasticity from lack of moisture and conditioning. A cholesterol conditioner deep conditoner could be helpful. A pre poo of conditioner, honey and olive oil treatment is a great way to incorporate moisture into your hair.
May I also recommend a repair treatment? There are many to choose from, but since you are not using too many products, I would suggest using something safe, like Nexxus Keraphix once a month. But investigate all of your repair product options, because there are so many out there. If you are trying to stick with natural products, try a "kitchen" recipe. I believe there are quite a few on the Hair Recipe board.
Most important - be gentle and patient.
