We were talking about hair and she thought that my flatiron hair was a perm. I told her I stop getting my hair perm before I started going to highschool. Then she said I was half natural because I flat iron my hair. I thought being natural was not getting perms because I stop getting those 6 years ago. I love my hair in puff which my mom can't stand. So my question is was is the meaning of natural.

It's whatever you want it to be.

Generally, no relaxer=natural.

But there are other definitions floating out there. I say just define it for yourself and don't worry about anyone else's definition.

You'll run into a lot of different definitions of what natural is especially on the various hair boards.

But my definition is hair that is free of relaxer or texturizer or any chemical that alters the hair structure i.e. going from curly/kinky to straight or vice versa.

I agree with knt229. Natural hair is hair that isn't chemically altered. You can press/flatiron/blowout your hair as much as you like, but as long as you aren't putting chemicals in it to make it straight, your hair is still natural. You're just wearing your natural hair in a different style.

I'd say natural is your hair being in the state in which it was intended to grow. NO chemicals no anything...may diff definitions tho..

I think the girl is crazy(sorry, I know she is your friend and all). Natural as MSA said is no chemicals. If a white girl flat irons her curly hair, does it make it permed? Hmmm...She didn't know how to compliment you on the health of your hair without having to put that creamy white stuff.

While I generally tend to agree with your definition it causes too many debates. You'll get some people saying well then according to that you shouldn't wear anything but a shrunken fro, no twistouts no nothing. Or that using conditioner means your hair isn't natural because it makes it feel different.

It's all a matter of perspective I guess.

I would consider you natural. Flat ironing is a temporary style that has the potential to cause damage if done incorrectly.

Natural hair to me is no chemicals that permanently alter your curl pattern.

Virgin hair to me is no chemicals and no color.

Your friend is misinformed. Natural means no relaxer. You may also get people who think if you color your hair, it's not natural. :nono: This is a never ending debate.

As far as Im concerned natural means no relaxer, wearing it in your natural state. I had this argument with this chick who told me that just because you blow dry your hair (to dry) your not natural. :ohwell: That makes no sense to me.

I think the only real given for being natural is no relaxer. People have their own definitions for what they consider natural beyond that.

Natural=No Chemicals. Sounds like your friend may be hating on you, jealous on the beauty and condition of your natural hair. You have a variety of options at your disposal as a natural: air dried, blow dried, flat ironed, banded, twisted, etc. Would it have killed your friend to just give you a nice compliment on your hair than to try to make you feel guilty for changing up your look. Yeah, she's a little Green Eyed hater if you ask me.
