My first co-wash left my hair crunchy!

I did my first co-wash two days ago, with White Rain Fruit Fortifying Conditioner. After rinsing I conditioned for 5 minutes with Pantene Relaxed and Natural Moisturising Conditioner, and then rinsed out and put in some Mango and Lime Island Oil. I'm currently wearing a protective sew in weave, with my hair out only on the sides, back and front. I made a single braid of the towel dried hair for it to air dry whilst I was at work. When I got home, I undid it, and the result was very very crunchy hair. Not only the weave, my exposed hair was really hard too.

I put in a little more oil and ran the blow drier through it a few times to tame the jagged texture. It worked a little, but I still feel the crunchiness. Do I need to rinse more thoroughly or something? Cos my hair feels so dang hard! I'm wondering just what I'll find when I take this weave out next week, with all this Crunch'n'Munch action I'm seeing on the surface.

I conditioner wash with VO5 Stawberries and Cream conditioner. This works really well it leave my hair extremely soft. I believe you are supposed to avoid conditioners with high levels of protein and cones. I leave this in my hair for at least 1 hour with a plastic cap while I work out. Currently it is helping me to maintain my protein moisture balance. I do protein deep conditioning 2 times per week. Almost daily con-wash. Shampoo 2 times per week 1 time per week or every 2 weeks clarify.

Does the conditioner you used have any "cones" in it? That may be the cause of the dryness/crunchiness

CO washes only work for me if I use a heavier, richer conditioner. Conditioners like Suave, Dove, V05 are just too thin for my hair and I end up with a problem the next day. Right now I am using Paves Conditioning Repair Milk.

Also, I find that CO washes have a cumulative affect. The first couple of times after I restart,it might seem pointless, but after a while my hair really responds to it.

That's an excellent point you raised. I'll keep at it. And maybe I'll quit being a penny pincher and go for something more luxurious than White Rain!

It was great back when Lekair used to sell that big "jug" of their cholesterol conditioner. It was thick enough and it was cost effective.

I haven't seen it in a while.

I bet it was the Pantene conditioner. I left that in my hair as a leave-in (dliuted) and my hair was cruncy and hard. I put that conditoner in the back of my cabinet and havent seen it since (which i hate because i actually like the scent).

I know! It smelled soooo good. At work I kept catching whiffs of it when I turned my head. Now I might have to ditch it.:( If it does the same thing the next time I use it, I'll have to let it go. I like me Doritos crunchy, not my hair.
