MY DUMB MOMENT.... THE GVP- CHI

Why did I got to Sally's yesterday and bought the new GPV 1" GENERIC CHI. I flat ironed my daughte's hair and was impressed that it was straightening her natural hair without any smoke or burning smell. Now the Chi I have used in the past only had a on and off button. I didn't keep the Chi at the time because I could not afford it. But this time the GENERIC CHI was on sell for about $50. Anyways, the only dissapointment I was having with the iron was that it took too many passes to get the smoothness I was trying to acheive. End result, it got staight but I spent too much time. This morning I tried it on my texterized hair. I turned it on and looked at the dial. It was on 230*F . I tried to turn the knob further to the left but I wouldn't go any more. I pick up the box and it says heats up th 446*F. I thought some "up to". I was just a about to march right back up to Sally's and give them a piece of my mind. How dare Sally's of all people promote a product like this. I pick up the iron again and tried to turn the knob to the left and then to the right. All of a sudden the light starting flickering from green to red and I saw numbers like 284*f, 338*f, 392*f, 446*f AHHHHHHHHHHH. I put in on 338*f and passed it over my hair in one pass DYNOMITE RESULTS !! You go Sally's :lachen:

So what did you actually turn to see those numbers? Does it have a gap at the end of the plate that would catch your hair? I just went through two flat irons at Sally and I'm about to return the second one today so I will try this one out.

Question though ... do you not use the Maxiglide anymore? It's weird for me because sometimes it works and then other times it does nothing at all

Also, I just found out that the Maxiglide is not solid ceramic ... the coating is coming off of mine showing silver through where blue used to be.

Another question ... do you feel that it straightens better than the Maxiglide?

There is a dial between the plates on the handle and a on/off switch. I 'm usee to turning dial clockwise. This one turns counter clockwise. And I use to dials staring on zero not 230*F. So I thought that was the highest setting.
My MAXIGLIDE steam burst don't work anymore. I think the may be clogged, so it is not as effective anymore. I got mine when it first came out and I was using on two heads, including friends. My hair is sooo sleak now. No gaps in the plate caught on my hair either. I got this one after taking back the Tourmaline with red plates from Jilbee (sp) at Sallys. The Maxi [rovides more body. But RIGHT now my hair is so straight like nobody business!

Oh okay. That's funny my Maxiglide does the same thing. It's too bad because it used to work so beautifully ... especially on my son's hair (I have to straighten his hair before I braid it) and I never had to worry about burning his scalp.

Also, I too, just brought back the Tourmaline ... I wanted it to work soooo bad but it didn't straighten my son's hair at all (I test his hair first because he's natural and I figure if it works on him then it will most likely work on me).

The other iron that I just bought is the Jilbere definition series and even though it straightened very well, my hair got caught in between the plates and I had to rip an entire section out  .

I am going to return that one today and get the GVP. I hope it works but I do love Sally's because if I don't like something I can bring it back and am not stuck with anything that doesn't work. Thank you for the info!!

I just bought the GVP (but I paid $60 for it because it wasn't on sale anymore:ohwell: ). The lady said that it had solid ceramic plates but I will see. I tried one section and I think I'm going to like it!! I will have to really put it to test on my hair after I rollerset it to hit the roots (22 months of new growth).

Did you ever try using a rattail comb when you flat iron? I find that I get better results doing it that way than when I used the Maxiglide and I don't have to worry about pulling hair out of my head.

I will keep you updated ... as soon as I use it on clean hair. Thank you for the recommendation!!

I use a fne tooth comb all ways, especially on the roots since I get my hair texturized. Another thing I noticed is that I haven't had to use anymore heat.
No poofy hair for me, even held up today outside in the mist. This is great! :D
