I have successfully converted her into practicing good hair care habits(lol). I told her about cowashing , deep conditioning ,protein treatments,ad protective styling. Mow she just wants to know what products to get, because her nape and sides are really damaged due to tight braiding, tight ponytails , weave jobs. She is about to grauduate highschool in May 09' so please ladies let me know what to do exactly im still a newbie as well. Oh by the way I deep conitioned her hair today with queen helene cholesterol and castor oil. Also what protective stles would you ladies suggest?

Her hair is too short of protective styles.

Since she's young and I'm going to assume that she doesn't have money to spend on high end products, she can experiment with the ORS line and see if it works for her. S-Curl is a moderately cheap moisturizer too.

She actually wants to go natural but she doesnt want to do the bc, she hasnt had a relaxer in sevral months. She says she doesnt want to put the chemicals in her hair anymore so, im encouraging her to go natural because her hair is severely damaged.

Going natural would be great. Maybe she could try the C&G method and have her braids done by someone who knows how to go easy on the edges. Other alternatives would be no-heat styling such as rollersetting, braidouts, bantuknots, etc. If she does decide to use heat, she needs to find out what the lowest heat setting would be for her hair. I recently found out my hair does just fine with 280 degrees and I had been using a much higher temperature than that for years. The length of her hair may limit her styling options but just encourage her to keep the end results in mind.

Maybe she should consider getting braids. She can give her hair a break. Check out growafrohairlong.com, its a very informative website and she can read about the crown and glory method.

Some other good yet inexpensive lines are Elasta QP and Motions. I would definitely recommend Motions CPR for your consideration. It's great for damaged hair. Good luck!! :yep:

Braids or kinky twists are the only suggestions I have. Maybe she can learn to put them in herself like a lot of us on this board have done. Plus being that she is a high schooler she prolly doesn't have a lot of money to dedicate to haircare.

I learned how to do my own braids from this website and page: http://growafrohairlong.com/braidreg.html

Good Luck ladies!

I think she is at the perfect age to learn how to take care of her hair. She could grow out her rexlaxer and cut it gradually till it's all out. 1/2 inch every 2 months. Considering how on average 1/2 inch grows every month she would just be cutting the relaxed part and still retaining the length. She could use clips to keep her hair up instead of rubber bands and elastics. She could bun it, bantu knot, twist or braid out her hair as she is transitioning, which gives a texture that is similar to her natural hair. Co-washing will help her manage the two textures. It won't be easy and she will want to relax again when that new growth starts comming in but it will be worth it if she sticks to it.
Good luck.

If not braids/twists, maybe she can:

-Wear half wigs
-Get cornrows with extensions, up into a ponytail with the ends left unraveled
-Make/Wear Clip-in hair pieces
-Get strawsets. It would be a cute short curly hairstyle on her.

Those would be my other choices.:yep:

Welcome to the site!!! Glad your cousin wants to start her hair care journey to healthy beautiful hair. One thing I would suggest is not to become overwhelmed and not to "jump" into everything. Take it easy, one step at a time, and have patience.

Secondly, no matter what she does, deep conditioning and moisturizing need to be her best friends right now to help her damaged edges and ends. Cholestorol is a great inexpensive deep conditioner for a high school budget. s-curl is an inexpensive moisturizer and it's FABOLOUS!

To help with her transition maybe try braidouts, twist-outs, straw sets, and roller-wraps; something to help blend the two textures but won't put stress on her fragile hair.

Hope this helps you two find a starting point and happy hair growing!
