I am really curious as to how and when do you use this product? I was told as a child that sulfur will break your hair out if you have a relaxer. Now, I am reading about MTG and I really want to buy this product, but I am reluctant to due to the sulfur. I need serious information about this product and sulfur with relaxers.

Relaxers break down the sulphur bonds in hair so obviously something happens when relaxers and sulphur hook up. But personally I do not know about breakage etc. Someone on the board could probably tell you what they know. Bonjour

I don't think that is true. How would people use a product like Sulfur 8 and Glover's? I never heard about any hair loss from those products and they contain sulfur too.

Thanks, I was just told this as a child and I was totally shocked reading on the forum how everyone is using this product with a relaxer and nothing happened. So, I am going to buy MTG.
Thanks again!

As a precaution, do a pa6tch test w/ mtg to make sure u r not allergic to the product. I've experienced nothing but growth with it, but to be safe on first use, apply to a small test area. That way, u will be spared any horror stories. :D
Happy growing!

I'm going to ask a really stupid question...but ...what is MTG? I just bought my daughter some Sulfur 8 braid sheen and I think I'll be using it too. She had really good growth with Sulfur 8. Just wondering if I'm missing out on something w/MTG

Shapley's Mane-Tail-Groom. In the search feature, type in MTG and you will soon find out why the board is abuzz over MTG :)

I relaxed my hair yesterday. I had been applying MTG for about three weeks then I went about three days without it after my last wash. I had burning for the first time since using Phyto but only on my nape area. This, however, was the area I used the MTG on most heavily.

I'm using MTG too, but I've decided to stop MTG the week or two before I'm scheduled to perm and also use a clarifying shampoo to remove any traces of it. I love MTG, but I don't want to take any chances w/my hair!

I personally never had a problem with sulfur and relaxers, but I was using Sulfur 8 not MTG.

Me too! I got my texturizer touch-up yesterday and my front hairline and nape area were on fire at the end of the process. I have never burned before and I wondered why it happened. I thought something was wrong with the relaxer. Now I know it's the MTG. Unlike you, I went an entire week without applying MTG and I even clarified heavily 6 days before my touch-up.

The same thing happened to me. I took a hiatus from the MTG for 10 days and I clarified 3 times before my relaxer, and for the first time, my hairline and nape burned like the dickens. I'm not sure why the effects were stronger on this part of my hair, but I'm about to get down to a bit of research because I don't want to have to give up my MTG. I've gained a tremendous amount of growth since my last relaxer ...

Now this is scary!? I too relaxed my hair back in April and had a very bad reaction, burning something fierce!!!. I have never had a reaction like that from any perm-I had just started using the MTG, and I thought it was the perm. It was a perm I had used in the past-but a different formula. I even wrote the company and told them they needed to check the chemicals in that perm! I have not used MTG now for about 2 weeks. I decieded to stop using it after someone else posted that suggestion before relaxing. But I still had not made the connection to what happened to me and the MTG until I read these post. My whole head felt like it was on fire and it was only on my head for about 2 minutes-I had to get it off my head!! I just knew I had given myself an awful chemical burn and that all of my hair would fall out. It did not, but I still assumed it was the perm and not the perms reaction to the MTG. I may have to rethink my MTG usage. I said that I was not going to purchase anymore after I used up the bottle and that experince has convinced me of that. :nono: :bud:

For the ladies that burned....how often were/are you using MTG. I didn't burn at all so I'm just curious if there is a correlation or if its just different for each person.

I used it twice.

I put MTG on my scalp on a Thursday (6/16). Shampooed it out the following Tuesday (6/21) and reapplied. Shampooed again the following Saturday (6/25), with clarifying shampoo - twice to make sure there were no traces. I didn't apply MTG and got my relaxer on the Saturday (7/2).

Burned like h*ll.

I used MTG about once every other day which is more than recommended. I am definitely going to stop using it at least 2 weeks before relaxing. My hair is plastered to my head in the back now and if I comb it I know it will break off. MTG greatly increased my rate but not enough for that kind of damage!

Those who have burned did you use MTG straight or add something else to it? I should be getting my trial size version of MTG and my biggest fear was how it would interact with my relaxer.

I used it straight as in I didn't mix anything with it before applying. However I always use s-curl on my hair and scalp so I'm sure that mixed in.

I used MTG straight. I don't have any sores, but the burning sensation was very uncomfortable. I rinsed right away, neutralized twice, shapmpooed with Porosity Control 'poo & conditioner and I'm doing fine now.

I think I'll stop the MTG application THREE weeks before a touch-up to be on the safe side.

I mix my MTG with extra virgin olive oil and I used it twice a week..

I used every day and not mixed with anything in the beginning. Now I mix it with evoo and a little con and h2o in a spray bottle. I just relaxed my hair again last night, I had not used MTG for about a week or so and I did not burn like I did in April. I also mixed in a little evoo in my relaxer as well. I think next time I will use a little more than 2 capfuls.

Once I used Sulpher 8 and had a relaxer, my hair started breaking off REALLY bad. So I stopped using it. My hair is VERY soft, maybe that is why it broke mine off.

Softresses

I was using MTG every other day for about 3 weeks, and stopped a week before texturizing for 10 minutes with Dudley's Mild No Lye. NO burning here. In fact, that's probably one of the few times that I have not burned at all.

I'm curious about how long some of you waited to use MTG after your relaxer, if at all??? I'm a week post so I'm ready to start using it again.

I'm going to start back using MTG in two more weeks and I will stop using it three weeks before my touch-up. If I burn again, I'm flushing that stuff down the toilet.

Have you guys thought about maybe basing you scalp really well prior to relaxing as you seem to be getting the burning? That's what I would do. I have yet to use this product.

:wallbash: Duh!!! It just dawned on me that you guys might be experiencing the burning as the sulfer has an exfoliating effect. When used in skin masques, it's excellent for unclogging pores in problem skin This might be what's causing the extra sensitivity. You may want to base the scalp well before relaxing for added comfort.

Hi Crysdon,

I waited exactly one week after my touch up to resume using my MTG. I was fine. Depending on how long you want to see your hair a lil' staighter, you may want to wait some more. My roots are already growing out quickly! :D

Interesting...thanks AJ!

Also notice that hair products with Sulpher... i.e. Sulpher 8, are made to help exfoliate... as in the case of flaky, dandruff scalps. It helps to get rid of the flakiness.
