I officially started my HHJ in October of 2009. As I look at progress threads it seems like a lot of members started theirs in the same month. I personally was a weave-queen during college so I decided for the next homecoming I wanted have a head full of gorgeous, 100% scalp-grown hair. So just for curiosity sake when did you begin your journey? Was there a specific event that encouraged you to start?

March 2008. I just got tired of my hair breaking off out of control. I knew that the level of breakage I had wasn't natural and something had to change. I've been on a great HHJ ever since......

June 2007 is when I began transitioning, but it was accidental -- I was weaved up till October and couldn't get touchups.

October 2007 is when I really DECIDED to go natural....stumbled across the Dominicans and realized if I was natural, I could go from curly hair to straight hair and back.I still wasn't taking care of my hair between blowouts, though.

April 2008 is when I found LHCF and realized I could have whatever length hair I wanted. I took over my haircare and I guess "officially" began my HHJ.

I don't even know.

July 2007 was when I decided to no longer get relaxers and started wearing braids; but I don't remember what month it was when I stopped listening to the braiders and started researching how to take care of my hair.

I don't remember when I stopped going to them and had a friend of a friend start braiding my hair. Whenever this was, this was about the time I started researching hair because I realized the braiders had no idea what they were talking about.

In October 2008, I stopped the braids and cut off what remained of my relaxed ends. My hair pretty much big chopped itself.
Why did I do this? Because the friend of the friend did not show up to braid my hair as arranged the day before I had to leave for a conference. So I took out the old braids, cut the relaxed ends off, and wore my hair natural to the conference. In hind sight, her not showing up was the best thing that could have happened to me.

I think I lurked here for about a year and a half before I joined. My join date is incorrect. It should say 1/10 not 1/09.

Reason for HHJ: I didn't know how to take care of my hair. No one who gave me advice knew how to take care of my hair. I needed to figure out how to take care of my hair. When all else fails start looking on the internet.

I started in august 2009. Originally I wanted to grow my hair out because i was being cheap! before i started my hhj i was spending at least $120-$180 each sew-in (which i was getting about every 6-8 weeks and i was tired of wasting all that money) and i had got a bad sew-in which caused me to cut alot of my hair off. Also i wanted to grow my hair because i like the way it looks long and noone else i know has healthy hair below shoulder lenght. The biggest reason i want to grow my hair is because its so convenient. I dont have to go to beauticians all the time and it will be easier to do hair styles.

My last relaxer was in October 2009. I wore braids and weaves until May 2010, and randomly decided to BC on Memorial Day- May 31, 2010.

I was tired of spending thousands of dollars a year on buying someone else's hair.....I wanted my own, growing out of my own scalp. I also wanted to set a better example of what I considered to be "complete self-love" for my 3 daughters, even down to the texture that grows out of our their own heads.

February 2008. I've been natural for years. I think my last relaxer was in 1992 or 93. However, my hair had never been past APL. I wanted to grow my hair longer, but wasn't sure what I was doing wrong. So I started doing research online. I found LHFC in February and joined in March.

I was on Gaia online back in July, searching for something else entirely when I saw a thread called 'why won't my hair grow??' the OP had hair that was stuck at shoulder length for 2+ years. So was mine. She asked what shampoo she needed for growth. And luckily for both of us, one member who answered told her there was no such thing, and growth wasn't her problem, retention was. She linked to lhcf, the rest is history. I am sooo glad for that. :yep:...who was that Niko's cousin anyway?? LOL

I had been lurking on lhcf for years. every time I googled something about hair this site popped up. So I became a registered lurker lol. When I bcd I realized that I had no clue what to do with my hair. And I was curious about the other parts of the website that I wasn't getting to see. So I dished out 6.50 in june and decided that healthy hair was the only hair I wanted on my head no matter how long or short it is

I joined this forum long before I started healthy hair practices. I didn't start properly taking care of my hair until August of this year. Before that, all I did was cowash and my hair never gained moisture because it was soooo porous. August was when I got my steamer and Roux PC:) and stopped sleeping in my afro-puffs so yeah, I put August as my starting month.

Reason: I thought natural hair was beautiful. I was so inspired by all of the gorgeous women that I saw rocking their natural tresses. Even now, when I get discouraged because of the shedding or breakage, I can look at all of my inspiration photos to get motivated again. I still have love for my relaxed hair but I prefer having texture

April/May 2009. Before grad school I had grown my hair to a full APL after reading Cathy Howse's book. Moved, bad braids = breakage and I couldn't get it to grow back. In April 09 - I said to myself "I did it once, I can do it again!" - googled and a few sites came up. Realized I didn't have to use Cathy's products necessarily, but any moisture retaining product. May 09 a SHS cut off a lot of my hair and gave me severe scalp burns with a relaxer. So I think of myself as having started my HHJ in April but for progress pictures I use May as the start date. At my 2 year anniversary I want full BSL hair!

May 2009. I got tired of finding broken hairs in the sink, on the floor, and on the back of my shirts.

I started my HHJ in February of 2009. At the end of 2008 is when I really began searching the internet for hair topics. I was so tired of my hair never getting longer than SL. I was lucky enough to find a lady's blog and she suggested using carrot oil since it contained no mineral oil or petroleum.

I lurked her site for a couple of weeks then she posted a link to LHCF to answer a question. I clicked it and looked at LHCF, but promptly left thinking "those women are crazy and obsessed with hair!". Fast forward to February 2009. Another blog posted a link to LHCF, but this time I took the time to read through a couple of threads. I lurked for three days and then became a paid member. I've been here ever since.

I officially started my HHJ in January 2010 (unofficially in August 2009). Got tired of having thin jacked up hair and wanted to have a healthy head of hair.

December 2007 I started caring about my hair-- My SO's sister came to stay with me for the holidays and I loved how healthy and beautiful her hair was. I was still under the false impression that because she is bi-racial that having beautiful hair was simply a part of of her genes.

She talked to me about the products she used (Mizani etc) and I googled How to grow long AA hair. Cathy Howse's info was then introduced to me..I purchased her book..(and her conditioner and moisturizer--which I hated) then after further googling I found BHM and LHCF.

December 2007 I had fragile relaxed NL hair. By April 2009 I had healthy texlaxed APL hair.

My new journey began June 2009 When I decided to BC and venture over to the natural side of things.

June 2010 (1 year natural) I was VERY pleased with my growth and overall health of my hair. I am excited to see where I will be next June.. I am hoping for even CBL length.

I got my bsl hair cut to SL in April 2009 because of "breakage" and was DEVASTATED. I braided my hair up and found KISS in June and started my journey then.

I believe it was July 2009. I simply wanted healthier hair (I was relaxed at the time). Now that I'm transitioning, I started a different HHJ in June 2010 after my last relaxer in May.

I googled "black hair care" in December of 2007 because I wanted to learn how to take care of my own hair. I officially decided to transition in August 2008 and I am cutting the rest of my relaxed ends next week!

I started my hair journey in April of 07. I was tired of broken hair all over my shoulders. Plus a classmate of mine (black) had APL hair, so I knew it was possible to retain length; just didn't know exactly how. That's where the hair forums, yt vids and fotki came into play :) So grateful that I found the light.

I started in August 2008. I'd seen an ad for Triple Gro hair products in a magazine, and that prompted me into wanting to know how to grow my hair long. I did some research online, and found lots of hair sites, including LHCF. The rest is pretty much history :)

I'm an old head around here, but I am sad to say the last few months I have been seriously neglecting my hair due to grad school. It's bad too because I know what I do is wrong, but I just don't have the time! I am starting my HHJ today. Lucky for me is that I was a huge PJ so I am sure I got something good in my stash to get me going.

I also placed an order from beautyofnewyork for some dominican products.

@ bolded- Too true! How did we survive w/o the internet!?:lachen:

I started my HHJ in June 08' because I knew my hair always sprouted during the summer time...I wanted healthier hair , and was OBSESSED with flat ironing, which I knew would be NO NO even if I tried in NYC humidity...The first hair sista's I came across online was Ladykpnyc, and Chicoro, they inspired me to go far into my journey...

I first started lurking the site in Dec 05 I think it was, then joined at the beginning of 06.

I was in grad school and throughout college, my hair was on this constant cycle and I was tired of it. Every year in the December at the end of the semester my hair would be shot to hell and I'd literally be almost bald headed in this one spot in the back. It would grow out over the summer, look pretty good for fall, but slowly as the cold months set in, it would snap right back off. EVERY year.

I decided to stop relaxing in March. I got a weave in May to "protect" my hair over the summer while I visited DH in Hawaii because I knew I wouldn't be able to find a beautician or black hair store and didn't want to be tempted into relaxing again.

I chose June though because the sew-in started looking awful after a few weeks and I was tired of it but didn't know how to take it down or what to do after I did. I searched and searched on google and LHCF kept popping up. I lurked for a few months then joined and now I'm serious. My fam. laughed at me when I said HHJ but this has truly been/ will be a journey. I realized I can keep neglecting my hair and keep having damaged SL hair that I have to cut into a CL bob to try to salvage every other year or I can take care of it more seriously and have something worth wearing growing out of my own scalp.

Well, around September 2009 was when I made the conscious decision to allow my hair to grow out and stop relaxing, but I count my HHJ as beginning March 2010, the month of my BC.

Of all the years I was relaxed I wasn't ever "bonelaxed" or whatever, so I was "used" to dealing with some type of texture. I also relaxed about every three to four months, so I was used to having new growth too. With that being said, I treated my transitioning head like I did my relaxed head. I was on the forums and stuff, but didn't make a real change in haircare practices until I was fully natural.
