Moisturizing hair while extensions are in?

So far, my newbie self has already posted another thread asking for help on my hair and I feel very welcome and confident to LHCF :)

Another quick question though:

To the ladies who wear any type of weave, how do you moisturize your own hair without getting the weave hair oily? My problem seems to be that every time i moisturize my own hair, my extensions will pick up the oil from my hair and get gross and limp looking. While my hair desperately needs extra moisture, the extensions don't. How do I fix this?

if you're talking about an actual weave, try getting a color applicator bottle and putting your oil in there to apply it at the scalp. it really also depends what kind of hair you are using.

This and using the pads of your fingers to massage the oil unto your scalp plus it would help to not oil your scalp before going to bed....this trick helped really helped me prevent having greasy hair.

Hmm I think my main thing is that I put it in before I go to bed :-( So when I wake up, my hair is gross. Guess that means I just have to wake up earlier to oil my hair.

In the case of a sew in, I usually spray braid spray, infusium 23 or fantasia ic moisturiser on my cornrowed hair twice daily.

For box braids, I spray braid spray on the the entire length of the hair twice daily.

This method keeps my hair well moisturised and ensures that I have no itching and a healthy scalp. An added bonus is that even if some of the spray gets on the weave hair by accident, it doesn't make it greasy.

Nonie you didn't answer the question :)

virtuenow I most certainly did. The C&G regimen explains how to moisturize. I have my own warped extension regimen but for someone new to extensions, I always recommend the C&G method. I don't do weaves so can't answer on moisturizing a weave. If I had one, I probably would not use a moisturizer. I don't use one with singles yet my hair is far from my scalp but rely on baggying to condition my hair and encourage sebum production. Since my hair would be cornrowed and lying against my scalp, I would expect sebum moisturizing to be better. But I would not recommend people to do something I haven't tried and I haven't tried this with a weave.

Like Nonie I rather just baggy. I try not to put anything on my scalp when I have braid extensions in because of the buildup and sweat (I am a regular exerciser). If I am swimming a lot I will Shampoo and DC. I DC every 2-3 weeks with my braids in anyways I may put a lil something on there to keep them looking shiny but not much else.

Nonie oh, I didn't see your link (or it didn't show on my comp yesterday). I just enjoy hearing about your braid extension regimen b/c its unique & a refresher for me!

I have a question that I haven't seen addressed on a hair forum but that relates to this. I have extremely oily hair. I mean to the point where when I take an install down, my hair is almost greasy feeling. What would you suggest for a moisturizer in that case or can I just count on my natural sebum?

If you have a sew in weave you can moisturize your cornrows underneath with a color applicator bottle (pointed tip). I have single in now (kinky twists) and I spray the length of the hair with a mix of Infusium 23 and Mane & Tail braid sheen spray.
