Mixing things with a DC?

One thing I've noticed over the last few weeks is that my hair usually feels nicer, moist, soft, and hydrated after a prepoo treament, but after I finish washing and DCing... that's no longer the case. So today I wanted to try using a prepoo treatment as a DC, but I know DCs are special because they penetrate deeply into the hair shaft.

So what I want to know is will my deep conditioner lose its penetrating ability if I mix it with an instant conditioner, EVOO, and a little water?

I usually add coconut oil to my DC ...not sure if it loses its penetrating ability though...

Maybe you need to re-evaluate your current products... I don't add anything to my dc's; occasionally I'll mix dc's with each other for a more intense treatment but having to add and play mixtress with oils and whatnot in order for them to work means they are no good for your hair(IMO)

Thanks for the responses!

I know, it's hard for me to find a DC that works though. I'm just tired of buying non-effective DCs when the products I use in the prepoo seem to work for my hair. Hopefully I will find a DC that gives similar results on its own, but I thought I'd try this for now.

Nope - I tend to use DC's mixed with things, because while the DC is penetrating to the inside of my hair, and making it moist, the add-in's make sure that the outside of my hair feels fabulous too.

I've yet to find a DC that works as well for me as my doctored up DC's do - and doctoring it up is a good bit cheaper than doing the PJ stroll for years on end. :lachen:

I've mixed oil with my DCs before (EVOO) but after a while I found products that work without mixing (Elucene, Aussie Moist, KC Humecto, Silicon Mix, and Miss Key 10 En 1 Plus - yes, I'm a PJ).

I found the oil didn't help make the DC any more penetrating, it just made the outside of my hair feel better. I came to that conclusion when my hair felt dry after a few days even after moisturizing and sealing daily.

Also when I stopped doing prepoo DCs, I found my last DC took better. So when I do prepoo it's just with ORS Mayo or just oil.

But yes, you're right, finding a DC that works how you want is hard! I also found that clarifying monthly or every 6 weeks or so helps my products to work like new.

P.S. - Porosity could be an issue that's making your hair lose moisture faster than it should.

I tried LongCurlz DC mixture and it really made a difference. I'm 4a/b 7 mos.transitioner and was looking for a DC that would make my hair look and feel soft. It's basically the Aubrey HSR condish mixed with coconut oil, shea butter and olive oil. I'm so happy that my hair made a turnaround :)
