Mineral oil, I never knew...

...was in so many great products!

In the last few weeks, I have thrown my phobia of mineral oil out the window and discovered some great products that just happen to contain mineral oil. I was able to overcome the often preached aversion to mineral oil when I realized some of my favorite conditioners, LeKair Cholesterol Plus and Proclaim Aloe & Shea Butter Conditioner contained mineral oil, yet they worked great on my hair. Plus we all know Keracare is filled with mineral oil and petroleum to boot, but my God Macherieamour's gorgeous head of hair hasn't suffered any from these ingriedients, so what the hey? If it works it works. :yep:

I am madly in love with my BB Oil Moisturizer, it's pure magic on my hair, amazing, and so cheap too. And I am currently enjoying a run with Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum that also contains mineral oil. It's not like I am going to douse my head in a bottle of baby oil or anything but I've found some great products with excellent ingriedients that work and just so happen to contain a little mineral oil too. It's fun to learn the so called "rules" of haircare and then break them too. :D

So please share your haircare breakthrough stories too when you decided to go ahead and just use what works on your hair.

MINERAL OIL IS THE DEVIL!!! THE DEVIL I SAY!

It's one of those things where if it works for you, it works for you. Very few things around here are sound gospel. To me, MO is in the same boat as "cones," co-washing, protective styling-- some can take it, others can't. I can tolerate it more in conditioners, but not really so much in my moisturizers. Now if you start feeling an icky, chronic, dry, non-moisturized feeling creeping up on you over time then you know you have low tolerance for MO and you know what to do.

BraidedBeauty- mineral oil doesn't penetrate the hairshaft, it coats it...somewhat preventing moisture from getting through.

I've realized that my hair does have a very low tolerance for mineral oil, especially since my hair is 300x drier because of this color. I would have thought that it would be able to at least tolerate conditioners that contain mineral oil, but I'm not sure. I've tried Keracare Humecto in the tub and bottle, but neither of them worked. I've tried the Silk Elements Luxury Moisturizing conditioner, but I forgot about my results with that...I have another sample pack at home, I'll try that again one day. I've recently ordered some Design Essentials products, one of them being the Stimulations Conditoner which contains mineral oil...hopefully it works.

I just know that leave-ins and moisturizers with mineral oil are a no-no for my hair. I'll take cones over mineral oil any day.

I didn't know that, thanks for the info. No wonder the keracare daily moisturizer makes my hair look greasy, it contains mineral oil. Hmm, I learn something new everyday in this Forum:D

Almost everything I use has some type of mineral oil in it. And my hair loves it to death, so I'm definitely not knocking it.

I love my PCJ newgro hairdress way too much to give it up cuz it has mineral oil. I moisturize and then apply it so it kinda locks the moisture in. I'm not against mineral oil but I will stay away from those products that dont contain much else and dont seem to have any good ingredients.

I think I"m going to end up on this band wagon. I wasn't having any breakage problems when I was using my Elasta QP recovery Oil Moisturizer (has mineral oil) and I was sealing my flat-ironed hair with Design Essentials hair drops and it has a ton of "cones" in it. My hair always looked shiny and healthy. Now, I've put those aside and started trying new stuff and so far..............no good. : - ) If I know myself, I'm going to create a concoction that works far better for my hair than anything I've bought. I'm going to get some essential oils this weekend and add a drop or two here and there mixed with my QP...dammit!!! lolololol

Same here! What am I gonna do with nothing but water, mineral oil, and parabens?

There are lots of those! Infusium, NTM, Salerm 21, Cantu Shea butter leave in, and Kenra Daily Provision are all MO free.

cool, I may try the Kenra daily provision and I already have salerm 21 i didn't notice that it was MO free. THANKS

Is the Kenra for Daily use? if not , do you know of any daily moisturizers w/o MO?

Kenra Daily Provision does contain a bit of protein, but its much more moisturizing than 'proteiny' to me. Its a light misty like spray, if that matters. I've been spritzing it every other day for the last month or so. If you want a creme-type leave in though, I'd go with the Salerm or Cantu.

I use Palmers Coconut Oil Grease on my ends. However, I use oils (such EVOO, Peanut Oil, WGO, Kemi Oyl) on my scalp.

Truth be told all oils just coat the hair shaft. None of them really penetrate. So don't go thinking that mineral oil is the debil because it doesn't penetrate. All in all it's just another oil-a man made oil.

PREEEEACH!

Also, I use a Liquid Leave in cuz Im so heavy handed with creams

But a GREAT! Cream leave in that is SEVERLY Slept on is Thermasilk Straight & Smooth Leave In Cream..

Its only 2.50

How did I know you was gonna come in here being a PJ. Now wanna wanna make me spend my check!

Any natural/texturized 4bs who press have a substitute for Dudleys Cream Press? It has Petrolatum (what's that?), Mineral Oil and Lanolin. It's the only thing I've found that gives my hair sheen, soft and humidity resistant. It's the only product I use on the LHCF "no no" list. I don't have any other products with Petroleum or Mineral Oil. All recommendations welcomed!

My hair cant tolerate daily moisturizers with mineral oil but the rinse out conditioners with mineral oil dont bother my hair .

More so my skin than my hair has a prob w/mineral oil. I use to use grease all the time and my hair would not suffer, but I would get breakouts. Now my mineral oil is only found in the dominican conditioners which work well and rinse out. I haven't had any recent probs.

I guess I discovered my hair could tolerate mineral oil in leave ins too when I used my Proclaim Aloe & Shea Butter Conditioner as a leave-in on my ends. I used to have a rule, that I would only use mineral in rinse out conditioners. But that rule wasn't based on personal experience just the condeming voice out there saying, "mineral oil and petroleum are bad for the hair." :brainy:

But I agree with the theory that mineral oil can't be too vastly different from silicones in terms of coating the hairshaft. I have read where some LHCFers avoid cones like the plague whereas others (like me) depend on them. It's all a matter of what it takes to keep one's hair happy. And if there there a bunch of quality ingriedients in a product with a little mineral oil thrown in, what the heck, why throw the baby out with the bath water?

Im glad I came across this thread. A few products that I like have mineral oil, like my Elasta QP recovery. Its nice and light and it smells good, too. Well if it works for some, then so be it!!:D

Nothing again MO, so long as it is not in my leave-ins. My holy grail condish, nexxus humectress, has MO in it and I love me some humectress! Whenever I HAVE to use humectress as a leave in, I do so sparingly with a bit of water to thin it out a bit.

IMO, its like cones (which I try to avoid, except for the water soluble ones), some hair love it, some can't take it. . .

Mineral oil def does coat the hair strongly so I use it more as rinse out conditioner or on soaking wet hair. Any other way tends to weigh down my hair. I do use Keracare's creme headdress on dry hair but only use a tiny tiny amount daily.

Observation: A lot of people who said that their hair didnt respond well to mineral oil products also mentioned that they had dyed thier hair.....do you guys think that it doesnt react well to colored hair? Im thinking of coloring my hair in the future so im just wondering......
