I recently visited her site and found out that she discourages the use of vitamins, particularly the Formula 37? I've always heard that 37 was excellent and many people got good results. Do you feel that vits are unnecessary?

For me, vitamin supplements are essential, and not just for hair growth but for overall health because I don't eat as varied a diet as I would need to get the proper nutrition. Now if my mother (bless her heart) was feeding for me -- I grew up on free-range, organic foods and she was a nutritionist who made sure our diets were well-balanced and healthy -- I might've been able to make do without supplements. Cathy Howse recommends zinc and iron in her book and those have been recommended elsewhere as being good for hair. But I think her point about vitamin supplements not being necessary was, if you are eating well, then there's no need for special hair vits. In fact, before I ever heard that biotin, MSM, were "hair vits" I managed to achieve 7-9 inches of growth over 2 years (which is a miracle for me) without taking any of thsee so-called usual suspects. I took a regular vitamin alright, but that was to make up for the deficiencies in my diet and for my whole body. Hair was never my focus.

Bottom line: I believe vitamins will give your hair a boost only if those nutrients are totally lacking in your diet, or they are insufficiently supplied by your diet.

That makes sense! Nonie, when you used to eat all organic foods, did you notice a tremendous difference in your overall well being? Just curious!!!!

Yes, indeed. Put it this way. I grew up in Kenya where nearly everything is organically grown. I moved to the West and my health went downhill. I developed allergies I never had growing up (eczema, hayfever...to mention a few) and just a susceptibility to any contagious diseases going around, eg flu, colds. Prior to that, the only thing I ever recall complaining about was migraines. I even recall as a youngster making a deal with God that I'll swap my headaches for any other ailment out there. I just never knew anything could feel as bad.

Anyway, ever since I discovered naturopathy, several years now, I've given up foods that are OK for most people but which nutritionally are not essential. I've also strived to buy foods that are have as few additives as possible. And I can gladly say, I'm slowly getting back to my old healthy self. My immunity has had such a boost that I no longer catch colds/flu as easily as I did a few years ago, even when everyone around me has the sniffles. I also don't get hayfever (pollen allergies) anymore and haven't needed to take any antihistimines for years. I will admit that I am not as disciplined as I ought to be (a lot of it of course having to do with the fact that organic foods don't come cheap and aren't stocked in every store) but when I do eat right without giving in to temptation, my health definitely soars.

Uhmmm...

She does, recommend the use of vitamins in her book. I believe she recommends a Good Multi-Vitamin with Iron.

That's what I've always used, I did by some GNC Hair stuff(ultra norish hair), but I did'nt take it long enough to see any differenece.

I am however finding that taking the multivitamin has been benefical. She said that your hair and nails get the last pick of vitamins and I know that taking too much of certain things can be harmful and cause unwanted side effects.

I've never tried the Hair 37. I do know I cringe when I see the people here that list all those supplements they take daily, esp if not under a doctors order.

I just take 2 hair vitamins. I nearly passed out from HairFormula 37 vitamins because of the niacin. I think a bunch of vitamins are good if you are taking them for OVERALL health. If you are taking them just for hair, I would agree with Cathy that it is not good but that's just my opinion.

I think you choose what's important to you and the methods for achieving it. If a person wants long hair bad enough and are willing to take a bunch of vitamins, I think that's their choice. I think in Cathy's book she specifically advised against them which is why some people may have been offended.

She said:

**Keep your money in your pocket on these. They make you think there is a quick fix when there really is NOT**

I think people should excerise common sense, and consult a Physician to see if this is beneficial for them. In life you'll find out that there are no "Quick Fixes" we all want them, but Care, and Patience is what's required.

The Money Making Industry does captialize on the fact that you want something bad, in a hurry. Like all the "quick/fast" weight loss gimmicks. When it comes to putting things in your body you should not listen to Howse or ANYBODY, you need to consult your physician.

Common Sense.

Yes, I understand she does advocate a multi and basics like zinc. But from what I understand, popping a slew of vits like biotin, MsM, silica, and all that is not advocated.
Right?
