Hey guys

I've been noticing split ends around the perimeter of the front of my head and I was wondering if there was something I could do or not do to fix it?

I wash and DC once a week
I usually just flat twist my hair after and then wig it for the remainder of the week
moisturize and seal whenever my hair gets dry which is like every other day
I usually use a wide toothed comb and my Goody Brush like this to detangle

I've just added the Goody brush to my regimen like 3 weeks ago though. The split have been appearing before then

What is up?

How much do you use protein? Adequate protein ensures that the hair stays strong enough that it doesn't split.
Also, maybe it is the wig rubbing against your hairline that is contributing to the splits. You could try loosening it a bit so that it doesn't rub as tightly against the hair. Hope that helps!!

It's not tight at all. It comes with straps but I don't use those. I haven't done protein in a while so I will try that

Please stop using that tangle teaser!

There's numerous threads about those things causing damage and mid shaft splits. People were cutting off their length in droves :nono: That thing should be illegal for afro textured hair!

What she said. In December I had my hair done by a stylist that used the tangle teaser and I had soooo much breakage. I could hear it ripping through my hair. Never again. I'm natural, 4a/b

It's not the tangle teaser it's something similar. AW man! I really liked this brush! It's been helping me detangle.

Good tips have been provided! The ladies here are supportive and have lots of knowledge and experience.

In addition, you may want to take a look at the wig as a possible culprit regarding the perimeter mid-shaft splits. If the wig is laying on the same areas, day after day, it may be placing undue pressure on the hair strands. It could be too heavy and weighty for the natural hair. In addition, there could be some microscopic rubbing, or friction, from the wig against the hair, too. It may not be necessary to change the wig. You may want to consider sweeping the natural hair underneath the wig in another direction so that not the same hair is getting the pressure and friction of the wig.

You are on track because you are analyzing your situation using knowledge and understanding, and not 'guesswork'. Understanding trumps guesswork every time, it just takes a bit of extra time to figure out what's going on. I am sure you will determine the issue and will able to resolve it.
Please let us know how things go for you.

These are some good statements. Perhaps the wigs I have been wearing have caused the breakage I have on the interior, crown interior of my hair.

My hair us riddled (ya hear me...riddled!) with mid shaft splits and to a lesser degree split ends. I just deal and baby my hair under my wig.

My perimeter is presently jacked up from the combs in my upart. I dont mind too much because I leave very little hair out. I second regular protein treatments to bolster your hair. That and plain old time.

I used to have ridiculously bad split ends and I've just gradually been trimming. I did chop my hair from basically MBL to APL a couple years ago to address the ends. Depending on how bad your ends are, I would recommend doing the same.
