Re: ichelle Obama: relaxed or natural?

I think someone on here said that she's presses it or flat iron it.

Her hair is beautiful. I saw her and Barack going to the church on the new this morning. I love the thickness she has.

I read in a magazine last year that she was relaxed. Her stylist was quoted as saying that she has medium coarse hair and that what helps her maintain the sleek styles, or something like that. I am going to look for my original post and post the link in this reply.

I can't find my darn reply. If memory serves me right, it was an issue of SBH(I can't remember who was on the cover though) but the article regarding Michelle within the first couple pages of the magazine.

i hear people say that when you press with either a flat iron, hot comb, whatever so much that it's "trained", WTF does that mean in terms for black hair? Doesn't that mess up a person's hair texture after a while with all that heat? I need some clafitcation.

I would like to know too - the only hair I heard could be trained is men's hair when they are trying to get waves by always brushing it and wearing a doo-rag

I am not going to vote because I'm not a 100 % sure, but I was told she is natural and press/ flat iron her hair. I know for a fact her daughters are natural and they get her pressed.Either way her hair looks GREAT !

She's natural and gets her hair flat-ironed. Here's her stylist, Johnny Wright, sharing what he does to her hair:

Do you have any tips for recreating [Michelle Obama's] signature hairstyle at home?
It’s pretty simple. The foundation of any hairstyle is the cut. That’s one thing we focus on doing very well here at Fekkai. With that, I am able to switch the hair into like maybe two, three different looks. We try not to give her too many different variations. People want to see her with the same style, especially when it comes to politics; there’s a lot of scrutiny when you’re in that arena.

I say go back to basics and just keep it simple. Sometimes I flat-iron her hair under, or I use a ceramic curling iron to flip it out at the ends a little bit. With a flat iron she’s going to be able to lock the moisture in the hair. Because she has to get her hair done so often, the flat iron is probably the best tool for her. For an updo, I might do some cascading curls according to how formal the event she’s attending is, but mostly I give her a clean sweep up.

Also, to keep her hair moisturized, I use the Shea Butter conditioner from Fekkai and Glossing Cream. It really keeps the hair moisturized. And Fekkai Coiff Anti-Frizz creme is excellent for that. It's probably one of my favorite products.

Yes..this the article that I read about her hair being natural!!

Then again---maybe that's NOT the article that I read, because that article doesn't state that-------but I did read it somewhere about her hair being natural!

the article above, (link) states a totally different stylist name....I'm confused. :perplexed

Michelle Obama's Hairdresser Shares His Secrets

CHICAGO (CBS) ―

When Michelle Obama attends the inauguration and all the festivities, her hair will be done by a chicago stylist who probably knows her as well as some of her best friends.

CBS 2's Dorothy Tucker talked to him about how he'll do her hair next week and how he has created that special Michelle look.

Before she appeared on "The View," "Larry King Live," and even before she graced the cover of Ebony magazine, Michelle Obama sat down with Rahni Flowers. He's been her hair stylist for 26 years.

"She's just a wonderful lady -- bright, young, energetic creative," he said. "She's gone from curlier look over time when she was younger. As she's matured we've done flips, layered flips and then she's gone to a very simple look that's very clean and easy."

Until recently, Michelle visited Flowers almost every week. He's kept her chemically relaxed hair healthy and stylish during the most important moments of her life.

She is relaxed. :) I'm more inclined to believe CBS...

:giggle: I also got confused when I read the two articles with different names.

They're both lying. I am the one that does Michelle's hair. It's a lace front. I start off by making sure her hair is well DC'd and then I apply some MT before putting on a Saran wrap to ensure she doesn't lose any moisture. Next I put on a firm-fitting cap.... :p

It doesn't state that her hair is NOT relaxed just what is used to style it...

Right. It never even says anything about her being natural or any kind of chemical process. It's just about flat ironing which a lot of salons do to relaxed hair....

:lachen: you made me laugh...lol

someone here saw her at the shop cant remember but i say pressed
not only pressed but probably "trained"
Yeah, a member here has the same stylist and said she's natural.

I don't know. Whoever does her, Malia and Sasha's hair is doing a damn good job. Malia's hair was blingin' and swangin' today

You also have to remember that not everyone has the same definition as we do in regards to "natural." Some people think that wearing your natural hair means not wearing any weaves.

There was a little tidbit from an article several months ago where a child asked Michelle if she wore weaves, and Michelle responded saying she was all natural. I started a thread on it, so the link and everything should still be there.

Depending on your texture. My hair is 4a everywhere except about 1 inch around my front hairline. The 4a part has pretty much retained its curl pattern, but the hairline portion is perpetually straight.

For me, its no biggie because I rarely wear my hair in its natural state.

HTH

Summary of the two articles: Rahni Flowers did her hair for about 26 years and refers to her hair as "chemically relaxed". Johnny Wright did her hair for an Essence or Ebony layout; she called upon him again while she was on the campaign trail, most notably for her speech at the convention. He does NOT state whether she is natural or relaxed, just how to "recreate the style". (So I guess we go with Nonie's info.)

I tend not to pay as much attention to "recreate the style" interviews, because we've all seen those given by Bey's stylist. The instructions never start with "apply your lacefront wig with glue...."
