Menopause creating hair issues. Need your help, please!

I am so inspired by all of you beautiful women, especially the mature women who still look great and have beautiful hair. I am turning 53 next week and I really need help. My hair use to be beautiful, long and thick but the last year has really been tough and I have lost a ton of hair. What hair that's left is dry and very brittle. I am perimenpausal and the change in hormones has wrecked my hair. Can anyone help me? Have any of you encountered similar menopausal issues that created hair problems? What did you do? What products did you use to combat dry and brittle hair. Part of me is ready to throw up my arms and just give up, the other part of me is not ready to succumb. Any advice or help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi deborah11

Yes unfortunately I know what you are talking about. :bighug: Hopefully more ladies will jump in to help out. Keep bumping your thread so its on the first or second page so you can get more responses.

First know that you need to work with this issue from the inside out. So make sure your diet and exercise regimen is healthy. I know that means different things to different people, so I recommend hitting the Health and Fitness forum to get some pointers.

Make sure you vitami levels are where they should be and take the necessary supplements if needed.

Start doing daily scalp massages for at least a minute to stimulate the circulation in the scalp.

Some ladies take hair vitamins/hair vitamins with dht blockers.

We all probably have different responses. What I am doing for products is
1. Using Terressential Mudwash 1x a month on hair and scalp.
2. Using AO Blue Chamomile Conditioner weekly for hair and scalp.
3. Oiling my scalp 2x a week with an oil blend of castor/olive/sunflower oil, vitamin E and 4 essential oils.

Keep Babying. Keep your Protein/Moisture Balance in check.

Some the other goodies: Plenty of sleep, a good diet, a good vitamin, managed stress and some DHT Blockers.

The Regimen will definitely be entirely different than 20's, 30's etc...with some major adjustments to compensate for Estrogen & Progesterone and Testestrone Levels fluctuating all over the place.:spinning:

I stopped using shampoo and do more moisturizing with that Sally's humectress and oil mixture. At least 3 times a week. My protein comes from using eggs and I moisturize and seal daily with wave nouveau and seal with an oil. Oh, my leave in is by Giovanni, it works best for me and I was with wen fig, 613, or the one with mango in it. I know how you are feeling.

Big hug for you!! I've been in peri-menopause for about 2/3 years and I'm 50. Here's what I do:

Exercise for 1 hour in the morning and run 1 mile on the treadmill at night.
I take a multivitamin, fish oil, saw palmetto (DHT blocker), vitamin D, hair, skin & nails, and a probiotic.
I co- wash weekly with Trader Joe's nourish spa, alternate with moisture (Elucence) and protein (henna, neutral protein, or AO GPB).
I use Giovanni leave in or Taliah Waajid PBM, I seal with grape seed oil.

I am low porosity, fine strands, medium thickness. I was losing my hair in the crown area and on my edges. I massage my scalp daily with various oil blends. I do most with a plastic cap or heat cap.

I hope this helps. I do switch up with different oils and DC's but these are the staples. I also use the praying hands method to detangle because its gentler to my hair. Keep us posted on your progress.

What is the praying hands method?

This is good info. I'm in full menopause (haven't had a period in almost 4 years) and my hair is just beginning to recover, but I know it will not be the same again as it was in my younger years.

OP I hope some of the answers here will help you. This thread may help others who are going through what you are and those who are around the corner from menopause like myself. Please don't give up.

:bighug: I know exactly how you feel. I have read all of the ladies advice to you and I agree with all. I'm in full menopause. First full year with no period. My hair went through so much since peri-menopause and just recently has started to feel and look better. Again, I think starting on the inside - good diet, multi-vitamins, and then baby-ing your hair, getting plenty of rest and exercise - - everything that you have been told in this thread will help you. Good luck!!!

Ditto to what everyone is saying about diet and exercise, the inside out approach. I take collagen supplements, and they help me better than anything. Make sure you are getting good EFA's like raw flax seeds (I grind mine fresh and put them in my smoothies and yogurt. I also take fish oil and Borage seed oil.

Emu oil is a natural DHT blocker. I believe JBCO is also, I've been using it recently and my hairline is thickening up nicely!

What is the praying hands method?

It's a detangling method. You load your hair up with conditioner and the part it into sections. I usually section mine into six sections and twist them up. Then I take each section and slide it through my hands as if I were praying. Doing this removes all of the shed hairs gently and detangles my hair. I usually slide each section through my praying hands a couple of time. I wish I had known about this method earlier. It would have saved me loads of hair. This forum is the business. You just have to read and apply the tips. These ladies are amazing and I don't know how the figure this stuff out. Thin hair, thick hair, 1,2,3,4- ABCD, healthy or in poor shape, there's info to combat all of it.

Oh, I see! Never heard of this before. So it really detangles huh?

Vitamin D. Most black women are deficient, especially during that time. And before I forget, estrogen and talk to your doctor.

I also incorporated Mineral Rich and Saw Palmetto Rinses and rotate Hairomega & Viviscal for my Hair which both block DHT.

Tea & Coffee Rinses has also helped alot.

After my Annual last year, I had to start taking Vitamin D. So, I agree with @Adel10 and @JerseyGirl.

i recommend to seek hormonal therapy as well to have some blood work to see what you are deficient in. how is your diet? this is more of an internal problem. how is your water intake and do you consume a lot of caffeine?

Thank you all for your responses. I am taking natural supplements that address menopause issues, and hair vitamin (hair essentials). I am going to get some saw pametto and I know that I was vitamin D defient at one point but my doctor put me on prescription vitamin D and my level came back up to normal. All other blood tests were fine and only slighly anemic (iron) which I have been all my life. I am not on HRT and I am really trying to stay away from that and just use natural supplements to address my hormone issues. I am not sure that my hair will ever be the same but I will keep pushing forward. My mother is in her 70's and still has thick hair but she took HRT for years. I am so appreciative of all the responses and I am going to try the praying hands method and other things mentioned here. Thanks again.

I drink alot of water and eat healthy, lots of fruits and veggies with very little red meat. Mostly seafood and chicken breasts. I rarely drink anything caffeinated and I gave up coffee (even decaffinated) several years ago.
I am somewhat afraid of HRT because of health concerns. I am going to use use HRP as a last resort, and I will try everything natural before making this choice. Prescription medication usually creates havoc for my body and the last thing I need is more drama right now.:yep:

IDareT'sHair - Where are you scoring your Saw Palmetto for rinses? Are you using the capsules and creating your own rinses? I started using the gels and applying the oil directly to my scalp daily.

Checking in here as I just turned 50 last week. I workout like a fiend and pop vitamins like nobody's business. I eat well most of the time too. My crown started thinning in my 30s and I've abated that, but just recently, after having thick, lush temples, they are thinning and I'm freaking out.

Going to the doctor in a week. I'm looking at pictures of my edges from just a few months ago and tearing up. Several in my family have female-patterned baldness that exacerbates in their 60s. YIKES!

Just when I really, truly feel comfortable in my own skin, my own skin changes...

Hugs and luck to all of us battling the signs of aging.
