Went to see my derm on Tuesday about hair breakage/loss.
Derm- I don't think its alopecia. I see short hairs; new growth I think.
Me - WHY is it breaking like that? I've been natural for years.
Derm - Oh thats good! AT home perms should be outlawed....
15 minutes later..............
Derm - You're very anemic
Me - I know. Have been for years
Derm - Thats the problem. You have to get it under control
Me - Short of a hysterectomy, you would recommend what?
Derm - Hmmmmm, lots of protein and meats.
Then she hands me a bag of real 'spensive poo and 'ditioner and you're gonna love this ...her scalp T oil. I swear this is nothing but a carrier oil with t tree oil.
I've stopped crying for the moment. She didn't say "baby, let me recommend a good wig shop."

So, if you're anemic, watch your hair. It will tell you a story that you should pay attention to!

Ummmmm. I wonder if that's why my hair grew so much after my hyst. in '01. Sure I wore it in a protective style and kept it moisturized, but it REALLY grew a lot.

Prior to that, I'd always been anemic, so much so that I'd suffer from heart palpitations. Those darned fibroids!

Thanks for sharing and I hope your hair problems are solved soon. And if you're looking a good iron supplement, Slo FE is good time-released supplement that isn't supposed to cause the constipation that many like Feosol do.

i just want to thank all of the ladies who resonded to this post. i'm really learning alot. i too am anemic, have had fibroids and was taking the drug Accutane. i've maded an appointment for the derm the 21st of this month. i never thought that all the stuff that i mentioned would effect my hair. duh. i'm really trying to stay away from red meat so i will have to ask the doc another way to fix the anemia.

my moms hair started growing really fast after her hysterectomy also. she had heavy periods and fibroids which led to the hysterectomy. hmm...I'm anemic all the time. I've even been refuesed at the blood donation vans cause they would do that aniemic test and I'd fail!

LadyDee,
I feel your pain, my levels have often been in the teens. After I got tested about 4 months ago, I started taking my iron again. I take the Sundown Brand. It's called Carbonyl Iron. On the bottle it says it's a safer iron supplement, better tolerated by your stomach. It's highly absorbable and bioavailable to your body. I know it works because my levels went up to 84 the last time I was tested. Recently, I stopped taking my iron because my periods have been really scarce, but I think from now on, I'm going to take one a day. For 2 tablets they are 50mg (278% daily value) with 117mg of Calcium. Oh by the way, I bought mine at Wal-mart and they're only about 3 or 4 dollars for 200 pills.

I just wanted to add, I agree, your hair will tell the story. A while back mine was telling the story of out of whack hormones and low iron levels. But don't worry, your hair will grow back, probably sooner than it would take you to find a good wig shop. I'd just suggest for you to get some essential oils, castor oil and wheatgerm oil (for vitamin e).

Good luck!!!!!!

Sorry just saw the post. And yes I will keep everyone posted. I have started taking iron supps. on my own because of the info received here. I wanted to put a henna in my hair this weekend but have decided not to, because my appointment is on the 21st. and I want him/her to look at my scalp without having any interruption of the diagnosis. Oneshinyface..... I plan on not using anything on my hair on that day i.e. Mango Butter S-Curl. But I will deep condition Sunday night the 20th. What do you think about my thinking? lol
