Lay everything out on the table. Things like how much debt you were in or did you feel this is something that is kept private?

Not only did we talk about our debts, we are currently paying them off. I dont want surprises like that after we get married. We put everything on the table.

Oh yea. I was in college and still racking up debt, so we definitely discussed it. He was hesitant to discuss his credit card debt (not much since he only had 1), but it was so tiny next to my loan it wasn't even a big deal. We were below average as far as debt at our age when we first got married. What I wish we had discussed prior was our financial philosophy (attitude about paying bills, saving, buying cars, etc) beforehand. There have definitely been disagreements about the way I do thing vs the way he does, especially when he came back from a year deployment where I'd been handling everything my way

Not married but I think it is dangerous not to lay it out on the line. Whether it is high or low...your spouse has a right to know because it could affect them.

We discussed all of that well before we got engaged. We've also discussed our plan to handle my student loan debt with his parents.

Absolutely. Finances should be discussed (often and deeply) once you decide to cohab or get engaged IMO.

Definitely! Finances should definitely be an open topic. We have a joint account and separate accounts. We still respect each others privacy with our separate accounts, even though we have each other's passwords. I never log into his and neither does he mine. It is strictly on the event of some sort of emergency since our accounts are still with the same bank.

Yep sure did...and continue to do so frequently and often. We both practice Dave Ramsey's guidance on becoming debt free.

We laid it all out. Fortunately, I knew anyways.... He had more debt than me, but he actually helped me get my debt paid off first and fast.
