Mama\'s Kitchen

Up until I was 12 years old,my mother was dead set against me using any heat on my hair. I had to endure ponytails while the other girls were sporting french rolls, fingerwaves, pineapple waves, crimps, and let's not forget...stacks! Man, how I envied those girls! Well, my mother got excited about my junior high school transition,so she decided I needed to upgrade my hair regimen. She decided a little heat would not hurt,so every 2 weeks, my aunt would hard press my hair.

I loved it! Blue Magic grease and that old school pressing comb got the job done! What experiences (good or bad) did you all encounter in Mama's kitchen?

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

When I'd get my hair pressed (once in a blue moon) by my mother...I'd scream and cry cry cry. I was super-tenderheaded. That's all I remember. I think I blocked the rest of it out.

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

Getting those ears burnt on the top when the hot comb slipped! Whoo! I remember those days!

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

I concur with the rest of the girls...yeah, my mom thought she knew what she was doing and burned me everytime. I've very tender headed. My mom did things to my hair back in the day I'm amazed I still have hair on my head!

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

my mom didnt do my hair much. my older brothers made sure that my forehead and ears were burned each day with the curling iron.

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

Girl, you brought back some memories with the Blue Magic thing! I just remember lots of smoke, the red medium tooth plastic comb, and my mom snapping "Keep still!" at me.

Anyway, those were the days, and - although fried - my hair looked absolutely gorgeous when Mama did it

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

That good ol straighten comb that you put on the stove..boi.. I remember the steam smokin from my hair.. and the blue magic grease.. boi momma still uses it faithfully...

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

Now I remember why I am so against pressing and curling irons!!!Personally!!!`My mom accidently dropped a straightening comb and it landed on my midriff where I still have the burn mark...then because I jumped like a scalded cat it did not get a chance to do anymore damage. I was about 7 years old!!! Another time she took me to a lady to get curls put in my hair and this po ole soul of about 75 years old hairdresser, washed my hair and with shaky hands, proceeded to straighten it with lots of grease while it was still damp and then hot curled it with smoking hot curlers. I could hear the snap, fizz and hizz from the hot comb and curlers. After she was finished she handed me a mirror and I was hoping to at least be breaththaking....( I was too terrified to move!!!

)...ladies, all I had to show was these ridiculous looking no shape slinky knots all over my head and grease dripping down the sides of my face.

I cannot tell you how helpless and frustrated and disappointed I felt. O yeah, this was supposed to make me real pretty for a special occasion....I was 12 at the time. I guess I should have been thankful that she did not drop that straightening comb or steel curlers on me....because I believe those curlers were hot enough for BRANDING...

you can trust that I never allowed my mom or anyone to get near me again with the "Instruments of Torture!" ...really. I acted up big time if mama even mentioned it.
grin.gif
Now I know that I could have been permanently injured and bald from the scalding steam on my scalp!...

To be honest, my hair did not require that kind of "training"...but it was de rigeur at the time, to look pretty

..Bonjour.

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

My worst experience with the hot comb was the night before my first day of school in 1st grade . My mom decided to press my hair. She kept telling me to be still...but I was moving around. She accidently dropped the comb...it got stuck in my hair and fell eye length. It ended up scratching and burning the cornea of my eye. I had to go to the emergency room and wear a patch on my eye for a month or so. The Doctor said that if my mom didn't bring me to the ER when she did that I would have lost vision in my right eye. All in all things turned out well. I had to look like a pirate for a little while...but I have sight!

Yep...we used blue magic too. Man that stuff was thick!

Re: Mama\'s Kitchen

My- you all have had bad experiences. I never had a bad experience with my aunt or my grandmother's best friend, but there was this one time, similar to when you go to the salon and your regular stylist is not there,so you settle for whoever can do your hair at the time. My aunt who regularly pressed my hair was unavailable so, another aunt did it for me. My mother warned me that my aunt was heavy handed, but for the sake of that straight, sleek look over the bush, I took my chances. Well she did not burn me but she put entirely too much grease in my hair, so much that my hair was hard and stiff! I used about 4 towels to wipe that mess off but nothing worked.
