Have you ever heard of someone having a reaction to henna? I heard that black henna can cause scarring! Please, someone school me since I want to do a henna tx on my hair this weekend. I'm not trying to end up looking like woodstock from peanuts!

I have never heard of anyone having a reaction BUT that is not saying that YOU cant have a reaction. May be do a patch test. HTH

Sorry to hijack your thread janaq2003 but as my question is henna related too, I saw no need to start another thread.

Does anybody know if it is possible to treat your hair with henna and experience all the benefits of thicker stronger hair, but WITHOUT the colouring?

I ask because im booked in for highlights later today but would really like to find away to make my individual strands thicker, and from reading around henna seems to be the best option; just dont want the henna to change the colour of my highlights!

advice appreciated!

You can use cassia. I think some ladies use henna for conditioning/strengthening, but don't allow the dye to release. Here's some info about cassia.

You should always do a patch test on any new item that you buy.
Please buy your henna from a smart, reliable source. Buy it from people who are knowledgeable about henna. You can buy it online, or from your Middle Eastern/Indian Supermarket. Make sure that you do not buy anything that says "colored henna" "or black henna." If you want your hair black, please learn more about Indigo.

Khalia27, there are a lot of ways you can thicken hair. If you mix up henna before the dye release with some conditioner, I am sure that it will help. Cassia is fine too, especially if you have blond highlights, it actually turns gray hair blond so be careful about that.

Khalia27, there are other ways to get thicker looking hair without the powders. Milk protein and fat are good ways (yogurt, mayonnaise, etc). Give it a try.

You can do a henna gloss. You make a henna mix and add your fav moisturizing conditioner to it, and only let it sit on your hair for like an hour. That will give you some of the conditioning, but the dye hasn't had a chance to release yet.

henna will not give you color if you do not process it. The process - in which the henna releases its color through a chemical reaction with acid. Lemon juice produces the richest color.

You can mix henna with plain water to make a yogurt consistency and apply to hair without heat. You should be able to achieve the thickening without the color.

Try this on a small section in the front part of your head and see how it comes out.

For the first question: "Black Henna" is henna with additional chemicals added to it. If you purchase your henna from any of the vendors "henna for hair", etc they will supply you with Yemeni, or Indian henna and their crop dates. This is important as henna is a plant with active properties, the fresher the crop, the better.

I dont put anything but water in my henna and I still get very noticeable color.

Thanks guys. Didn't have the highlights in the end, apparently my hair failed the "compatibility test".. Boo
Looks like I may be turning to henna for it's conditioning characteristics and subtle colour alteration after all!
Thanks for the responses!

Hey, sorry I didn't check back to this thread to ans. your question. I suppose my questions would be in what way are you using the henna?

**cool water?
**are you allowing for processing time? - before application and the process of color change while on the hair....meaning, how long do you leave it on the hair?
***What is the current condition of the hair? How porous is it?
*** What is the condition you apply the henna? - Do you apply to freshly washed hair? Hair that has oils on it already?
***If you are applying henna to freshly washed hair, was the hair rinsed in cold water - thus closing the cuticle, or hot water?

All of the answers you would give would also affect the reaction of the henna to the hair (theoretically) - This is why I suggest a patch test. Also, different parts of the hair may take color quicker than others.

ex. For me, the crown, my edges and basically any sections that have natural highlights will take henna quickly; conversely, the back and base of my hair require longer processing time for the color to hold.
