I thought I'd start a post to discuss lunar cutting and the method that I use. I just went back in my history and it seems as though I started in 2023. I hadn't realized that I'd been using this method for so long.
I stumbled on this idea when I started looking into clay washing and the Morrocco Method. I'd heard of lunar trimming before that, but I hadn't given it much thought. Obviously, in 2023 something changed and I got interested in it.
There are a bunch of different systems -- Morrocco, Farmer's Almanac, astrology, etc. Each tries to predict the most optimal time for cutting to lengthen hair, cutting to keep growth stunted, when to colour, etc.
I want to preface this post by saying, that I know hair grows from your scalp and not your ends. But as you probably also know, I'm into exploring non-traditional methods of hair care. I'm still on my no-poo, no comb/no brush hair care journey and this method of hair care fits right in.
In setting up my 2026 calendar, I learned that there are actually TWO different methods for calculating which zodiac the moon is in. I'm sure there are more, but right now I'll focus on these two: Tropical zodiac and sidereal zodiac (wikipedia). I've been using the tropical zodiac for the past couple of years, but this year I'm going to try cutting using the sidereal zodiac. In terms of which signs I wait for the moon to be in, I use this blog post's explanation.
I focus on cutting in the following signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Taurus, and Pisces. This year, I've added Leo and Capricorn. I mainly focus on the water signs as they are supposed to be fertile. According to the post, earth signs are also fertile with the exception of Virgo. Leo is also an exception as a water sign. Leo's lion's mane encourages growth so I added it to my calendar this year.

In my routine, I opt to micro-trim monthly. Again, I learned about micro-trimming from the Morrocco website. I combine it with the how I've seen stylists on YT do curly cuts and I micro-trim my hair, one 4c coil at a time. When I trim, I remove about 2-4 spirals up from the ends of my hair. That's only a few millimeters of hair per month. Basically the same amount as you'd see broken hairs in the sink if you let your suffering damage.
By doing this monthly, I've found that I get ahead of breakage at the ends of my hair. I often liken it to filing my finger nails, as opposed to cutting them. Even if you're trying to grow your nails long, filing any imperfections away aids in strength and as a result retention, as opposed to waiting until the micro-imperfections turn into something bigger.
If I miss a date, no harm, no foul. I just wait until the next month. After all, I was trimming my hair quarterly for years, so I know that my hair can handle it.
So, why do I do this if I don't actually believe that the moon's cycle impacts my hair growth? Well, as we know, when you have a process and stick to it, you achieve a lot of success. I was very good at trimming my hair on a quarterly cycle and I could always use this calendar and pick dates accordingly, but in this way, I know well in advance when I'm supposed to put scissors in my hair for maintenance. It's also become part of my routine and is one small step to ensuring that I don't shy away from trimming my ends.
Finally, I don't go to hair stylists for my hair care and I don't straighten my hair. Micro-trimming each coil helps me to ensure that my ends stay healthy. When I realized that my hair was really damaged back in 2023, I knew that I wasn't going to straighten it to assess the damage (I didn't want to make the situation worse) and I didn't trust anyone to cut it for me. What I did was grow my hair out and I kept all of the various lengths as is and managed each section individually.

Does anyone else lunar trim or use any other interesting method for deciding when to trim their hair?[/MEDIA]
