Loving mineral oil!!

is it possible that my hair has actually reaped immense benefits from the use of products containing high amounts of mineral oil??? YEAH
grin.gif

I used to disavow anything that was a daily aid with mineral oils and petrolatum and now i'm loving it. I'm even going as far as to purchase pantene daily oil creme moisturizer! My fantasia Pure Tea oil moisturizer is a God send for my twist outs and I'm always left with a serious shine and healthy look.
Someone please remind me why mineral oil is bad for the hair.. it gets no where near my scalp. I'm thinking i may run into problems soon and i just want to be forewarned... thanks

it doesn't surprise me, beana! just like my hair loves cones!! ioancare what nobody say. i'm gonna keep on using it. i think the best thing that we can do as individuals is discover what our hair likes and use it despite the reviews of others. as i always say, "listen to the hair!"

the hair and beauty guru adrienne has spoken...thanks for your input!
I mainly use the mineral oil products on wet hair so i'm guessing its sealing in moisture that way.. sort of like how you use vaseline on your ends. And as BRH said before "if adrienne does it, why not?"

Hi Beana3, my hair loves mineral oil, also. I look at the usage this way...I wash my hair every three to four days, so I don't really get the buildup that petroleum and mineral oil would cause. I also spritz my hair w/ water... I like how the products w/ mineral oil smooths my hair....

I have a confession to make, too. I've been having success with products that contain...

PETROLATUM!!!

Not daily products, but mild protein conditioners. Summit Mend, Lustrasilk HPC, Elasta QP DPR-11, Verifen Advanced Conditioning Complex... My hair is so soft after using these products. I still have to use another conditioner for a few minutes to detangle my hair, but the softness I get is worth a few extra minutes.

Dudley's PCA Moisture Retainer also has petrolatum in it. I like it on damp, freshly shampooed hair, but not as a daily moisturizer on dry hair.

I was kinda wondering the same thing about the mineral oil. If it doesn't touch your scalp how can it really harm you? My hair is loving the pantene daily oil creme moisturizer mixed with S-curl. I grew up using vaseline on my hair and scalp and it worked great. I'm with Adrienne, listen to your hair...

For me the secret is keeping my hair conditioned and moisturized and I find that I can use almost any product without buildup..who knew that deep conditioning and an extra wash once a week could make such a dramatic difference!

I'm so glad someone else is enjoying products with mineral oil I am too, but was afraid

to say so.

I am also enjoying the Pantene Oil Moisturizer. I've used it on my wet hair and my hair dried soooooooo soft--felt really good.

my sister wears her hair natural curly (she has 3a curls) and she puts baby oil in her damp hair and it works great for her, i also have a puerto rican friend who has hair down to her waist, who also uses baby oil in her hair all the time. i used it before too and it worked great.

or anyone who knows...
I have a really dumb question...

What are cones?

So, so true. We can say what did/didn't work for our hair, but until you try it yourself, You'll never know!

I myself LOVE vaseline/petroleum. It works great for my hair!

I used to grease my scalp with mineral oil or petroleum jelly products and it didn't impede my growth rate at all. The mineral oil and petroleum jelly is supposed to cause pore blockage and stunt hairgrowth. Well for me, I've never found this to be the case. When I realized that my hair grew the same rate when I stopped using mineral oil and petroleum jelly, I knew it didn't matter whether I used them or not, my hair was going to grow anyway.

I use mineral oil mixed with water on my scalp once a week. It seems like it has helped my growth rate. But, each individual is different.

This is what I read when I started frequenting the hair boards. But I had my scalp greased regulary as a child and my hair still grew. But I hated having a greasy, itchy scalp and a pimply forehead. This is why I don't like putting it near my scalp. On my hair is fine, though. As long as I don't use too much. A little bit makes it feel soft. Too much and it's a greasy mess.

I've been looking for a cheaper, easier to find alternative. BB Castor Oil Moisturizer and Soft & Beautiful Botanicals Creme Moisturizer are starting to look pretty good...

Sassygirl I can't stand a greasy scalp either. What I love doing though, is lightly massaging my oil blend into my scalp. My scalp is moisturized and the oils are light
smile.gif

my hair also loves mineral oil, motions CPR, le kair cholesterol, dark and lovely ultra cholesterol are all loaded with minreal oil and they all (except CPR) leave my hair soft moisturised and shiny. i think PJ and MO are good for sealing in moisture..

Ive noticed that my hair takes to conditioners with mineral oil well, it makes my hair soft vs. non- mineral oil products. Ive tried really hard to use products that do not contain mineral-oil but it does not do well for my hair.
..........And the whole natural ingredients thing makes my hair really dry.

Reading this post reminded me of the time my godson had a really dry flaky scalp and the doctor told his mother to rub mineral oil on his scalp 3-4 times a day. He has the most beautiful hair he is 3yrs old and his hair is so long that we either keep it braided or pulled back in a ponytail...most people think he's a girl. We only use baby shampoo, mineral oil and curl activator on his hair.

I have always wondered how to spell that word, I mean um vernacular.

But seriously, this is where the hair care advice gets really confusing. And I see these so-called superior hair care products that people here rave about and contain mineral oil or petrolatum, eg KeraCare, Motions. I don't know what to think. Because I also used them as a child, and the condition of my head was really good too.

So how about we put it all out there? Is there any consensus on whether these are good or bad for your hair? Could it be different depending on hair type? Just guessing, I don't know. And am I just terrible at hair care, sometimes it seems impossible to get stuff on your hair and not touch your scalp?

Could it be that it is not the products that are bad for our hair but the fact that most people do (did) not wash there hair enough.
In my journey to grow my hair I find that it is the increase in washing my hair that makes the most difference in keeping my hair on my head. I used to be a once every two week washer...even once a month sometimes (YUCK)....but can you imagine...all that stuff staying on your hair for that much time...not to mention the fact that i'd pile more stuff on it during the month...yet not wash out the stuff that was on it before. I don't care if it's cones, mineral oil, petrolatum, or the most natural healthy products...nothing should be piled on your hair day after day after day for two weeks or one month without being washed out.
My white friends (some with curly hair, some with straight) use tons of products on their hair...however, they wash every couple of days. I have found that the ones who wash everyday have problems with dryness, the ones who wash maybe every three or four days had the better looking hair. When I came to this board and found out that black girls can wash hair more frequently I was skeptical but the more i washed, the more i loved it and the more I found my hair reacted very well to the products that I was using. The same old products but now it does not feel coated or is not breaking.
I went through a phase of using natural products like aubreys but being from Canada..that gets expensive ordering stuff from the US. Due to school and no extra funds for hair, I went back to hair grease, baby oil and the good old vaseline...also started using conditioners and styling products from the drugstore (thank you LHCF for that one...i never thought i could use THOSE conditioners and hair products)now I could share with my friends no matter what color they were. Sure saved my pocket book because at school I lived in the girls dorm and we would all buy different things and when one thing didn't work for you, you could trade with someone else and experimentation was lots of fun on hair night. At one time I would have never thought I could participate in something like that. Anyways I digress from the original post...No I do not think that certain ingredients are really bad for our hair..if it makes your hair feel nice, then use it...just remember to wash.

Where do ya'll get mineral oil? Is it something I can pick-up at the drug store, or do I need to special order this?

It can be found in many hair products. Just look at the ingredients, it's usually one of the first 3.

I agree with Asha I think it was the not washing that was leading us down the wrong road. My mother never taught me to wash my hair every week, I too was a every two weeks or every monther because I thought I'd wash out my perm!
crazy.gif
My little sister asked me if washing her hair every week would wash out her perm after I told her to wash it once a week, so we were just passed down bad haircare advice.

I love cones and I love Motions CPR & Keracare Humecto which has mineral oil in it!
smile.gif

the mineral oil debate has me confused too... in every hair book or mag i've read at the hair dressers mineral oil was reccomneded or growing and maintaining hair; but when i came here it's like it was viewed as the anti hair... i don't know who's right, i guess its all a case of trial nd error...
