If this is a friendship I would be upset if I were going through something and my friend then becomes distant because they did not want to see me hurt. Is that what happened?
 
I feel you, OP. In situations like this, I just listen. That's all most of them want anyway. Most women know exactly what they should do in these situations. When they are finished, I say "oh okay" and change the subject.
